not to derail the thread but what do you say to a person who thinks racism against whites is a great problem in society.

I'd tell them to quit being such a honky.

Seriously, though. I'd just point out the relative income levels and standards of living.

Maybe, I don't know. I think a lot of white people can't dance simply because white culture fosters a nervous and uptight demeanor.

I'm white, btw. No inverted or reverse racism was intended.

I meant that 'blacks have greath rhythm' was part of a negative stereotype earlier. I remember reading an old dictionary/thesaurus kinda book in the school library when I was a kid, it was printed in like 60s or something, and there was seriously a description of 'negroes' as 'jolly, simple people who have a great sense of rhythm and who love drumming and dancing'. Against that background, I was wondering if no one else feels weird bringing race and rhythm together.

What? Everyone else on GAF is allowed to get upset when people make fun of their race/orientation/gender/whatever else. Do white people not get to or something? My mistake then.

I thought your response was the funniest thing in the thread yet. It's all fun and games until somebody makes a joke they don't like...lol.

Yeah, you're right about that generalization of black people. There's plenty of examples of it going back to Jim Crow. How that relates to generalizations of white people's dancing ability isn't so clear to me. I am open to that idea, but at the same time, I can't help but recognize how true the whites can't dance stereotype seems to be.

nvm, I don't even want to get into it with you

This thread proves the secret of dance is awkwardness.

Can't dance? Or best dance?

Most "positive" racial stereotypes implicitly carry along negative stereotypes. E.g. The stereotype that Asians are academically smart is juxtaposed with negative qualities, that they are less emotional, more robotic, their parents push them too hard, they're not fit to be leaders; or the stereotype that Jewish people are wealthy is part of a broader negative characterization of being greedy and stingy.

I'm sure someone will be along to explain that generalizations are bad unless other people have if worse than you, then its fine because reasons.

I have no problems with the usual goofy and awkward white dance moves as it's usually funny & entertaining but nothing is worse than white people who THINK they can dance but really can't.

They always have that, "aaaawh yeeaaaah" face on but it's really like "No. Please stop you don't look how you think you look right now."

This thread reminds me of one of the strangest / most awesome videos I've ever seen:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cs2j8f7H2WY - 'Hillbillies' playing bluegrass and clogging, circa late 50's / early 60's

Plenty of white people dancing there, and I'd say they do a pretty good job.

They're doing what I was saying before, taking the tempo and multiplying it. It's easier than you'd think, but unfortunately people tend to just stay with the bass drum and not even bother trying to think beyond it.

Turns out, it's not just white people who are racist...

That's so stupid, though. How does the impression that most white people can't dance actually harm you? Say you actually can dance... Then that makes you an exceptional dancer - you stand out. And if you can't? Then you're just like the rest, no big deal. It doesn't make any sense getting upset about.

As a white guy, who has been to plenty of weddings and other similar events, I can say that there is a lot of evidence to suggest that in general, we don't dance so great.

I've met plenty of exceptions, though. One of my cousins can dance like nobody's business. He is very into theatre/music, etc, so he's had a lot of practice. When my wife and I took a few dancing lessons in preparation for our wedding, our lady instructor (also white), appeared to be able to move her hips in 2 different directions at once. Pretty amazing. There are others, but those are the two that come to mind right away.

Honestly I think a lot of it is just lack of trying on our part. It's possible that a lot of us buy into the stereotype, as well, which leads to even less attempts to improve, i.e., "Well I guess we're just bad at this, so why bother?"

Or I'm just nuts.
