The same could be said true of many stereotypes. Your example was just terrible, saying a bad stereotype is good because if it ain't true in your case then you're seen in a more positive light it's just the kind of bullshit i'd expect a 1% to say about poor peoples that don't work as hard or some shit.

Dancing.
We are talking about dancing. Please keep that in mind.

The "doesn't work hard" stereotype has been unjustly placed on entire races and cultures for centuries and it has been more than a little detrimental compared to our "can't keep rhythm" one.

It doesnt hurt anybody I suppose. But who does it really hurt to say that black people like chicken and watermelon? Neither one actually hurts anybody. Neither one is comparable to a statement such as "black people commit violent crimes because it is in their nature" or something similar to that. That doesn't mean they aren't both ignorant stereotypes from ignorant people.

There's a really really horrific history when it comes to fried chicken and watermelon in this country. It may not be obvious to people born in the past 30 years, but it is definitely there and worth looking into. I would start at the Jim Crow Museum.

This thread = hilarious for all the wrong reasons

The idea that any race somehow innately possesses a hegemony on the ability to dance Vs it instead being a cultural inheritance is frankly asinine tbh. The more time you spend dancing the better you will become at it if you push yourself, no different than any other activity.

I'm pretty sure the white people can't dance thing is about modern dance (as of the 80's) and not the Waltz etc. There was a dance show on MTV(I think) in the 80's back when MTV was pretty much all white and there were hilarious sights to behold.

It's a joke thread...relax.

I think it's because they're a bit uptight. They tend to be too self-conscious and nervous to just let go and have a good time. You can't find the rhythm when you're all stressed out.

Did you just call white people uptight?
After the hundreds of gifs showing white people getting down and expressing themselves through dance?

For shame.

On both ends of the spectrum we have this

Egoraptor won that competition (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExGkgMvjJMw), and besides his huge fanbase voting for him he did actually put in a lot of work and showed improvement starting with basically no experience. That said, I get the feeling that Lindsey was robbed.

That's my problem. I'm not completely white but I still get stressed-- My grand-parents are from Europe, so I'm part Neanderthal, but I just freeze up on that dance floor.

And for context, someone once posted this gif with a "LOL Black People" caption on it and Bish banned them.

Implying that being stupid enough to walk out in front of a truck with your buddy filming is an exclusively black trait is a little different from implying that white people are goofy dancers.

how is it not?

is "black people cant swim" racism? I dont think so, its just a silly racial stereotype, like "white people cant dance" or "Germans have no humor" (okay that last one was an ethnic stereotype but you get the point)
Bringing up malicious, ill intentioned stereotypes with ugly historical backgrounds to try and make an academic point? Yeah, that gets the "stupid, blatantly disingenuous" tag of the day

You've got to practice finding the beat. That's the language of dance - without it you'll be lost. Watch some videos about it if you need to; there's a ton of information available to you online. The dance floor should be like finger painting is to a kindergartener; you should always have a good time - it shouldn't be a chore.

Ding.

I don't know why anyone is attempting to ruin a thread of amusing gifs of people dancing badly, but I'd appreciate it if it would stop.

I can find the beat no problem. I can bounce to it. But if I try to do something else with it, I get lost. I think there's a wiring problem in us.

Maybe not racism, but a dumb stereotype.

Stereotypes are bad mmmkay?

Some of them are worse than just bad, others are benign enough that they can be used to reverse the intent of the stereotype in order to demonstrate how ridiculous it is to try to put people into broad camps based on their ethnicity. This is one of the latter stereotypes. Considering alternatives like "all black men are absentee fathers", I'll take "white people are goofy dancers" any day. Unless you're a professional dancer who is being denied work because white people can't dance, it's about as harmless as you can get.

Double standards = double standards

and I don't see why anyone gets a pass regardless of the subject at hand. Entire thread seems to be in breach of the site TOS from what I can see. Stereotypes are rarely anything other than negative and the perpetuation of them is never a good thing regardless of how benign they may appear. Ultimately they encourage people to accept a concept as given versus arriving at their own conclusions.

Its because it is a corollary of the musicality of black people stereotype, which I rather hope wouldn't be tolorated on GAF with a series of gifs.

Which isn't the case at all. That field is dominated by white people especially with more traditional forms of dance.

You're worrying - looking at yourself from some outside source of judgement that doesn't actually exist. Dancing should come from the inside out. It's a fearless act, done in spite of whatever bullshit your brain says you should be doing instead.

EDIT: The dude below me gets it. All hail Duane!!

Some people in this thread are way too uptight. Ol' boy in the very first gif is a lifelong member of the ZFG camp. Look at the confidence in that face. He knows he is jamming and does not care what the world thinks.
