Titanfall Beta (PC/Xbone) Impressions (No Key Begging/Trading or I will ban you!)

I'm not terribly happy with my performance. I probably get like, 20fps on my laptop. Ofcourse, "it's a laptop, what are you expecting?" but I expected atleast 30-40fps. I'd still like to crank out the most of my game. Any tips? This is the fucking source engine man.

Yeah, I shoot whatever I see & they are often bots.

I mean, I think this is intended.

I believe the idea is that you never get into a state of "Oh my god I've been running around this map for 3 minutes straight and haven't seen or killed a single person oh my goooooooddddd."

It helps stave off that boredom of just running a circle around the map looking for someone because there's usually something nearby you can kill.

I don't hate it, it's still fun killing non-pilots.

That auto-pistol is SO broken though! You can straight wreck fools with it it's so wild.

If lowering the resolution doesn't work, you're SOL.

Alright, got to play for a while. Short impressions:
Terribly unoptimized. Runs like shit on GTX 560 even on low - low-medium settings, and then it obviously also looks like utter shit.
Parkour stuff is a fuckload of fun, I absolutely love it.
Boring ADS weapons, I honestly think the game would likely be tons better if it had weapons like in Unreal Tournaments.
Titans are okay. Not that much fun to pilot.

Will get it sometime in March if they optimize it (and nVidia releases good TF performance improving drivers) but if not, I'll wait till summer or just skip the whole game.

Texture resolution was killing my framerate.

I mean, like most games, lower all the settings to as low as you can.

You should turn off V-sync as well.

Lower resolution.

You could also try going to

Code:
C:\Users\*Your username*\Documents\Respawn\TitanfallBeta\local

and editing videoconfig.txt to eeke out a little more performance. Lowering stuff as needed.

I've got a 570 which isn't much better than your card.

You should try lowering texture resolution, and turning off V-sync.

I have a 120hz monitor and I felt like it was running really terribly but the issue was that it was actually just bouncing up and down between 30-70 if I had V-sync turned on in game.

I'm playing with all settings on high except shadows on medium and I lock 60 in game.

(PC Version. Maxed out)

The Good:
- Movement in the game is ace. No doubt about that, despite sometimes when trying to jump into a 2nd story window instead of climbing to the roof can be an exercise in frustration in some situations.
- Audio is great. Especially the banter of the AI.
- Hit detection was surprisingly good.

The Bad:
- Visuals are really lacking in this game. Are assets being raised for launch?
- Maps are really-really limited in scope thus far, despite transversal capabilities.
- Titans feel really weak when facing one another. A pilot will obliterate one faster than another Titan, even with damage core up and bursting with rockets.
- Lobby times between games is atrocious.
- Recoil, or the absolute lack thereof. Hold LMB to win. It looked this way in the vids, and after hands on, I can't fathom how they thought this recoil tuning was good.
- Yuck at the tutorial in this, both time it takes to do, and the fashion of how it's done.

The Fugly:
- AI. Sometimes it'll actually focus fire you. Other times it'll just run right past you as you guns blazing wipe out their buddies. They're far too hard to spot differences between them and pilots, key identifier being only their movements.

They could have reduced the AI and get more players in a game, but the maps so far feel cluttered as is with a few Titans out at once. Not to mention the choke points. Biggest issues are AI, then a tie with map design and visuals for me.

As of now, can't justify the asking price of this game, and have severe concerns about the longevity of play in this. $40 should be the target price.

I just finished playing 3 matches on the PC beta, and was about to post my response, but you said it better then I could. Thank you. Let me just add on a few points:

-The graphics suck, there is no other way of putting it. Granted, this is a near-launch game. Granted, IW isn't Crytek or Naughty Dog and never has been. But still when your game is THE hot new FPS on the year, I expected more. I own a 2 year old Asus Laptop with a GTX 660M card. To put that in perspective, to even attempt to run Crysis 2 or 3 at 60FPS I have to knock res down to 720p and turn off ultra-high detail textures among other sacrifices. With TF I got 60fps at 1080p no problem

-Movement reminded me of Mirror's Edge but simplified and fun as hell. I had far move fun running around the maps than

-AI bots, I cannot stress enough how boring I found them.

-Its the same CoD "opponent just shoots in your general direction and you die" mechanic that is why I switched over to BF4.

-Titan combat was boring. It controlled far too much like a human. Where is the sense of power? Of brute strength and several thousand tons of steel? They should have differentiated the experience far more than regular controls.

-Smart Pistol will need massive toning down from what I saw.

TL, DR: Is it a fun game? Yes. Does it deserve any of its hype? Not in the least. Will I buy it? Only when it hits $40 or less.

That is what I assumed. It makes the battle feel more epic, you get kills, and access a Titan quickly. I don't have an issue with it as it keeps the game moving at a nice pace - 250 kills per TDM would be insane, otherwise.

I love the pacing of this game. Maybe it's the way I'm playing it, but being able to traverse the side of buildings so quickly is pretty awesome.

I find it better to run around trying to get pilot and specter kills so I can get a Titan as fast as possible, then have it follow me as I use my anti-Titan weapon to take down enemy Titans while they're distracted by my Titan.

I don't really have any issues with the smart pistol. I think as people learn to stay mobile at all times, it's going to start deteriorating the benefits of the weapons. It's also kind of trash in a head to head fight.

I enjoy how responsive some of the stuff feels in this game but the visual noise in battle is unbearable. It's kind of fun when it's limited to just titans and people but the addition of the bots makes things so messy. There is nothing worse than walking into a room, killing a bot chain, and having some dude run up on the side of you to kill you while you were distracted with the game's fodder. Didn't care for the spawning either, and there were definitely instances of, "Oh wow I just spawned with three bots two feet in front of me. Thanks for the kills I guess." The maps are pretty bad too. The enclosed city one is really bad at facilitating Titans, and there is loads of dead zone on both maps that the fight never seems to shift to because everything gets clogged in one area.

Some of the best players I've seen have just gone with hyper mobile builds and the smart pistol, and they just jump around like a crazy person shooting people up. Mobile enemies aren't a disadvantage to the smart pistol.

What I was surprised by is that it will continue locking on while sprinting and jumping around.

So you can totally run at a fool, Jump over and around him while still aiming at him and then just unload and kill him.

It feels a little overpowered right now.

It's pretty awful for 1v1 but if you get the jump on them it's pretty much a guaranteed kill.

Playing on a 28" screen at 1920x1200 resolution and it STILL felt like the screen was cluttered. Maybe they're trying to induce claustrophobia? Changing the FOV did nothing for it, either.

Weird, the difference shouldn't be that big. Maybe I'll mess around with it more later today or tomorrow. I also already had V-sync turned off, I always do since I get massive mouse lag with V-sync in most games. Still, thanks for the advice

Well, you're not mentioning whether or not they're fighting similarly mobile enemies.

It feels like everyone in general matchmaking are still running on CoD fumes and are, for the lack of a better description, moving around too damn slow.

After playing more, auto-follow titan is way too OP. Once the new factor of piloting a titan wears off you can expect everyone out there to just set it to auto follow. Why wouldn't you? You are just as deadly if not more so as a normal pilot, with increased mobility plus you get the bonus of having an AI titan follow you around and just auto wreck shit. Really bad design.

Oh yeah, one thing I really appreciate is how much speed you get from the wall run.

It really incentivizes you to not just run places, but wallrun to places because you'll get there significantly faster by wallrunning + jumping.

One of the loading tips actually mentions that if you jump right when you hit the ground you maintain your forward momentum.

Is it weird that I like being on foot more than being in a Titan? Parkour is so much more fun.

I wish this game was filled with people instead of bots. But it's nice to encounter a scenario when you get to rescue your own bots from the enemies.

It's a fun game, but I doubt I would play this for more than 2 months at most. Being a multiplayer game only really limit the fun. (I'm a single player kind of guy) no story really sucks.

Dam multiplayer feels nice.
Tutorial would be nice if you could skip it in the release version not like there are that many options to remember. Just make the training modules an main menu option.

Autotitans get wrecked by real players. They don't dodge attacks or use their abilities.

Yup. Timing jumps, chaining wallruns, and using stim makes you go FAST.

Anyone get massive stuttering? Its almost unplayable on my 660gt 2gb, just wondering if there is a driver update or setting to change?

I am trash and the smartgun doesn't make you better unless your aim is dead accurate on them so if you're like me and have shakey hand and can never center it you'll die 100 percent of the time but I did improve vastly with it and I seem to get the most kills with it to if im lucky enough without the other pilots noticing me

Turn the texture setting down. You'll be hitting the actual 1.5GB Vram limit on your card and it'll be crippling the performance.

Managed a few games on PC last night, got it running 1080p and 60fps but it doesn't look that different to the Xbox version. Played with a 360 controller and it felt pretty good, really loving this game.

The feedback on this is going to be interesting 1-2 months post launch.

The game is a lot of fun initially , but ultimately left me feeling unsatisfied. It's certainly not something I see myself putting 100's of hours into like I did with MW , BF or Planetside 2.

Only got to play a couple of games because I am going out now but what a game. I'll be buying it digital, no way I would trade it in anyway, I think me and TF are going to be spending a lot of time together over the next few years, I want it at my fingertips.

I am pretty rubbish at it, the only online shooter I have spent much time with is Halo. I keep forgetting about all the options I have and just running along the ground straight into people.

I've played about 10-12 matches so far and I have to say that Titanfall is very fun. I rarely ever play online FPS MP (I wouldn't even say I'm an average player) so I'm a little surprised at how much I ended up liking it and how easy it was for me to get into. I'm not sure how long I would play something like this though so I'm hesitant to say this is a must buy for me. It would probably be a much easier decision for me if it had a SP campaign.

I like playing Rat Dota with Stim and Smart Pistol to farm the bots.

Should have the quick lockon upgraded soon (but smaller radius). Just hit 14.
