Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

Just played Brawl on Wii U and playing with something that isn't a GCN pad feels so awful. How does the Wii U Pro controller feel? Man, I'm going to really miss not having Gamecube controller support when this game hits.

Wii U Pro controller feels great. Of course, you'll have to get used to it.

Sakurai made a special note about Luigi, though. Whether he's now a starter character or still a hidden character but what just revealed early for the Year of Luigi is unclear, but Sakurai has given us no reason to believe that other characters like Toon Link, Lucario, or Rosalina & Luma are hidden characters. The fact that they were hidden characters in the last game doesn't mean that they have to be this time around, too. Ness and Captain Falcon were promoted to starter characters in Melee, after all (and went back to being hidden in Brawl, but still).

Besides, assuming hidden characters still exist this time around, why would they reveal hidden characters that aren't third-party this early before release? I'm sure they're going to want to have at least a few surprise hidden newcomers.

Because this game more than any other fighting game thrives on its characters. The characters are what makes this game series as popular as it is.
If they don't reveal any juicy newcomers, third-party or not, then there's honestly no attraction. Brawl only had a few hidden newcomers (Wolf, Lucario, ROB and the third-parties), the other hidden characters we got were characters that we already knew from the prior game(s).

Wolf, ROB, and Lucario are by no means "game-sellers", and Brawl had enough popular newcomer names to attract people (Wario, Diddy, the 2 Kirby characters, and Pokemon Trainer, most importantly).

But Smash 4 is now at a point where the names of new playable characters are much more significant. The fact we're getting character trailers for newcomers speaks volumes about that - unlike veterans, whom we generally know, we get moving footage and even a little customized introduction to hype us up. Plus, we got Wii Fit Trainer revealed right away, as well - as opposed to the WTF characters in Melee and Brawl, who all were towards the end of the unlocking chain.

I also want to bring up Sakurai's statements about the SSE and the internet - I wouldn't be surprised at all if Sakurai also thought that the internet ruins "the magic" of unlocking new characters, since nowadays everybody just looks up who the secrets characters are and how to unlock them.

I also don't see why "traditional" secret characters like Luigi, Marth or Toon Link would be on the starting roster this time around, especially since the roster is only going to be bigger than Brawl's, and that game had a lot of starter characters.

With the exception of Snake/Sonic in Brawl (who are a special case for obvious reasons), hidden characters have never been revealed over a year before release.

We'll practically know everything there is to know about characters like Rosalina prior to launch, so what's the reason for locking them away? It seems arbitrary to me. Again, this isn't Melee or Brawl -- there might be hidden characters who are traditionally starters and vice versa, or there might not be hidden characters at all. I just don't see the point in having to unlock a character who has routinely featured in pics of the day over the course of a year. There's no shock or surprise.

Which is exactly why I think we're not going to get hidden characters this time. :P

I used to think that it would be blasphemous to play Smash Bros. with anything other than the GameCube controller, but then I started playing Brawl on my Wii U more often...on which I can't use GameCube controllers. I started using the Wii Remote + Nunchuck and adapted to it after awhile, and now I honestly prefer those controls to the GameCube controller. It's weird. I would have never though that would be possible for me before. If I play Brawl at someone else's place on their Wii with GameCube controllers, it just feels weird to me now.

So yeah, I wouldn't worry. The Pro Controller is an amazing controller, and while it may take awhile, you'll adapt to it eventually.

if you're a C-stick user, it's not that great from what i can tell. it takes a bit longer to pull off your c-stick moves due to the layout

I wonder if there'll be anymore "mashup" stages like the Pilotwings/Wuhu Island. I think it'd be cool to have just a couple more.

It's not really a mashup, since wuhu island was the location of pilotwings resort on 3ds.

If you mean mashup as in, old pilotwings + new pilotwings, then maybe.

I use the wii classic pro controller and love it. Also own the wii u pro controller and use it or new super mario bros, Mario 3d and will use it for dk. It's a great controller.

I want to see more of the stages they've teased... Find Mii, New Leaf, Kid Icarus (on the WiiU). I'd also like to see what the difference between the City and Town versions of the Animal Crossing stage is... is it random? Selectable? Might be the same as the Punch-Out!! Ring differences.

Pro controller feel pretty good if you like the gamepad. It's essentially a smaller gamepad that is designed for longer sessions. I played the majority of Wonderful 101 and Resident Evil Revelations with the Pro controller and while the gamepad features are nice for those 2 games, the Pro just felt so much better. And comparing it to the GCN controller, it's slightly bigger but lighter.

This might sound really dumb, but is there a way for Warioware and Wario Land to merge together into one stage? I've never played any of those games so I have no clue.

I adapted to the Classic Controller Pro, but if and when you get a Pro Controller, practice with Melee through devolution, but make sure to download the button patch someone made that maps the a b x y to the correct button instead of position.

Doubtful. Wario Land has no aspects of WarioWare, and WarioWare only occasionally references Wario Land in its minigames (in particular 9-Volt's, whose minigames are based on Nintendo games).
Mixing them together would be just about literally the same as mixing Mario platformer games with Mario Party.

Since there's been WarioWare and Wario Land games on both handheld and console, it can go either way in terms of what we're going to get for either version.
There's been only one Wario Land on console (Shake It, the latest entry of the series), whereas the majority of the series was on handhelds (Game Boy, Virtual Boy, 2 for the GBC and GBA).
WarioWare had 3 console titles (GC, Wii and Wii U) and 4 handheld titles (2 for GBA, 2 for DS). Oh and there was one on DSiWare.

I realllyyyy need to see more of the Animal Crossing 3DS stage.

I guess I'm too positive about Smash 4, and not too picky with video games, graphic, etc as I see in Smash Graphic thread. I want to repost what I posted there since I'm concerned that thread might go somewhere.

Warning: I know I might used compressed pictures but I don't want to post 1080 because it might lagging up other people's computers.

You should replace that since that stage's visual designs got updated very recently. Yeah, my opinion might not meant much since I'm hardcore smash fan but I'm pleased with the graphic. I'm going to point out many things so be patience with a lot of pictures here.

1. Here is a updated version of Punch Out Stage. (It may not be picture but that's all I can find)

2. The cartoony color vibe that they chose to went with have been working very well. I really enjoy the pop out cartoony colors that I have seen for awhile. It does help the casts to blended together very well since they wouldn't look out of the world when you put them next to other characters as well.

Look at unfair comparison between Playstation All Stars Battle Royal Casts and Super Smash Bros 4 Roster.

3. I really enjoy how they adjusted the battle mechanism, along with colors for it.

4. Look at Characters' attacks or taunts effects since it seem to be much better in Smash 4.

5. Sakurai and his teams did fantastic job with characters' facial expressions. Look at Brawl's facial expressions for some of characters, they might look bland comparing to Smash 4 edition. I can't find other characters comparison but I will use Dedede one since it's in this thread. Look at their face, and you can see the difference.

He actually sweated when trying to held charged hammer in Smash 4, and I can't tell what he's thinking in Brawl.

Other pictures of expressions that I really enjoyed to look at.

6. CHARACTER MODELS! Look how much they improved their models. They look fantastic in Smash 4.

7. Also they updated items' visuals as well.

Also I would like to point out that Pokeball Pokemon and Assist Trophies look fantastic as well.

8. Don't forget all about our handheld Smash. They went with fantastic art filter and outline system for Smash 3DS to make it pop out very well. I really love how they done for 3DS even it don't get much attention as Wii U did.

9. Oopsy, I forget to mention STAGES! I will let you judge for yourself.

Overall: I'm definitely hyped with the visual graphic that I have been seeing in the game, along with fantastic choices of newcomers (along with their innovation and diverse move sets) and candy eyes stages. I'm glad that they move way from realistic but grainy arts that they went with brawl and go with cartoony vibe style for both system. They look fantastic once again!
yeah smash looks great

I wonder if the Punch-Out stage is like the Spirit Train, where it changes based on if Little Mac is playing or not. Seems weird to put all that Smash imagery in it and never use it, but Sakurai.

Decided to put together a more "realistic" conservative roster. Also took into account how it should fit on the screen (original file is 1080p). This isn't necessarily how I think the select screen will look, I literally pinched graphics off of the website.

So that's 48 squares including random.

Out of curiosity, why Jimmy T?

He's one of the original Warioware characters, has tons of music and other material to pull from, an atypical frame and body type and thematically unique.
But I don't recall there being anything as of recently that gave him any huge boost in popularity or relevancy. At least Little Mac had huge western demand, & Mega Man was requested worldwide. Even Dixie, who I don't think will get in, has Tropical Freeze & some decent fan demand prior.

Why would there need to be? We've got the freaking Ice Climbers in the game.

Superior Silver Pokemon Trainer, nice! I'd love for PT to have some costumes.

My revised roster:

No cuts. You can switch Robin with Chrom/Roy as you see fit, I just think there's gonna be a new FE rep. Paper Mario is probably wishful thinking, if I had to replace him I'd put in Shulk.

About the gamecube controller discussion... once you want to play the new wiiu smash bros you just buy a gamecube controller adapter for wiiu on amazon and thats it. Smash is not smash without the gamecube controller :P

Ice Climbers are retro + unique dual character. Excluding Wario, Jimmy T still isn't even the most popular character in his series. If that's a fan wishlist/"unrealistic" roster, then he'd fit. <_<

Poor Super Smash Bros fans. Maybe they should move on from 1999 and get with the times.

Why wouldn't it be? Any prediction roster is going to be a wishlist in the end. Read that it's only conservative relative to my previous one. Notice I said "realistic". Anywho, what's an acceptable character to replace him with? Because I bet (yeah maybe even my avatar) I can easily dismiss it as a fan wish and not at all realistic.

Ooo I like this and something minor but I like how mr game and watch looks the exact same but without his outline lol.

It's never been about popularity though. Jimmy T.'s the first character you see that isn't Wario in the Warioware series.
