Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U Thread 5: Yarning for Yoshi

You guys want romance? I'm writing a story about a big harbor tug that's one day towing a floating drydock carrying an oceangoing containership, when it falls in love upon passing by with a large towboat that's out pushing a barge that holds an inland cargo vessel.

It's a tale where a ship shipping a ship to ship a shipping ship gets shipped with another ship shipping a ship to ship a shipping ship!

No, I am not actually writing this story, but at the same time, this isn't the first time that I made this joke.

I like Sub Wars as much as the next guy(when I can find a game) but I think you should probably put the game down for a while.
Yes I get the joke.

We've truly come a long way.
Wow man, that really puts things into perspective.

Going back to the discussion about activity on SmashGAF once SSB4 releases, if you had asked me a couple months ago (I'm relatively new to the community) I would've said yes. After being here though and participating and finding the SmashGAF community to be surprisingly civil, friendly, welcoming, and engaging (for the most part) I will probably go on blackout for a week or two while I am playing and unlocking everything and then join back in. I also have fond memories of unlocking characters I didn't have knowledge of beforehand. (Although I honestly don't know how it won't get spoiled now a days) I think it would be really fun to arrange some matches/tournaments on here; hopefully the online play is really good.

We must BELIEVE the online play will be really good

Looks like Mac is doing his recovery move from POWii as a taunt (though likely without the stamina recovery properties).

Well, that's the last time I make nebulous comments about tampering with Iwata's own "quality of life."

God, it's been SO LONG. I missed a whole Direct. One of the hypest directs!

Oooh cool. Pic of the day.

I was expecting Diddy or Dixie too, but like the day before I thought, ha, he'll probably reveal Little Mac or something for no reason. And boom. When the trailer started, I felt prophetic.

Man, it's good to be back

That is small
for a boxer. Isn't it?

There is no small for a boxer, thats why there are different weight classes.
lil mac use to be 4'7 or something like that but next level bumped it up to 5'7 which is average height but everyone else is much taller than mac in punch out to make up for it.

Mac was wearing lifts in the Wii game.

Little Mac looks closer to his original height in Smash. Which is for the best.

Pic of the day. As shown in Little Mac's debut video, here is the height difference between Samus and Little Mac. He's used those mighty green gloves to punch out many challengers bigger than himself.
Prior to his announcement, I wasn't really clamoring for Little Mac due to the simplicity of his appearance. You can now consider me a full convert.

I like that Sakurai chose to not to broadly change his design and instead has focused on giving him really lively and varied facial animations.

fuck shipping

Yeah, it can be annoying being caught by custom charges, but that's the price we have to pay for not collecting an item from the distributor in person. But for the most part shipping isn't bad and as a result it's been a long time since I bought a game from a brick and mortar.

I like how everyone pins everything on Sakurai.

"Sakurai did good with faces"
"I like how Sakurai kept his size"

etc. etc. I'm sure he doesn't make every decision, does he?

yeah but sometimes they make shipping costs ridiculously expensive!

fucking shipping and tax

grrr

Pretty sure this was brought up before, but it is a common way to refer to the development team as Sakurai, especially as the full term would be something like Sora/Namco Bandai and I wouldn't be surprised if some other Nintendo studios have chipped in. Basically we keep in simple as say Sakurai. Also it has been said that most things do have to go through him since he is the director. Obviously he doesn't personally model every character, but he's not going to let the modeller call it a day until he is satisfied with the result.

But really who wouldn't want this in HD? It would work perfectly with the lighting that First Party Wii U Titles use and it would be glorious.

I'm surprised they even cut it from Brawl. Big mistake Nintendo.
One things I didn't get about Brawl is why they only brought back Melee stages, no 64 ones. I'm hoping this has stages from all three of the previous games. I don't know a lot about how they're implemented, but it seems like tossing in past stages (without really updating the assets) wouldn't be much of an extra burden.

I totally agree though, I'd like to see Fountain return. Even if I hate playing there with some characters, haha.

I'd also like to see Saffron, Mushroom Kingdom 64, Dreamland 64, Hyrule Castle, Yoshi's Story Melee, Jungle Japes, Melee's Hyrule, Corneria, Smashville, Eldin, Pirate Ship, Luigi's Mansion, and probably others return. Norfair too, but only if we can turn off lava, and they get rid of the edges on all the small platforms.

OOOH Smashboards lol

"If I was making SSB (and I hope to do that one day), I'd jam pack it with as much as the game could hold. 60+ characters, 50+ AT, all stages from 64 - Wii U and the games after it, and almost 2000 trophies spanning ALL of Nintendo's gaming history leaving no stone unturned. I would make it the greatest SSB of all.

EDIT: And costumes for each character."
Oh kids.

Heheh, I remember being 12 or so and wondering why they didn't just put everyone ever in there. I remember making a notebook for fun, with my ideal roster for Smash 2. I pretty much just included every game character that would come to mind, with the occasional move set listed.. I think I kept adding to it for a couple of years too lol.

They're pretty delusional over there. Many believe that Sakurai will WITHOUT A DOUBT add Ridley as a playable character and not a stage hazard. We already have yellow devil and dark lord from the find mii stage.

I actually, didn't know this before looking around but I remember seeing a close up pic of the hole Ridley created in Other M in that room. There also seem to be quite a few people who would enjoy him being a hazard because all the chaos he could wreck on the stage.

Personally I wouldn't view this image as him flying in as a playable character. The more I have to stretch something, the more full of worry I 'd get. But I guess that's just me.

Sakurai is definitely aware of the sheer amount of people asking for Ridley. Not only in forums, but youtuber wish list vids (and by proxy --YT comments) and even in face to face interviews Ridley was brought up. Despite that, I don't have high hopes for him. Just not 'feeling' that it would happen.

At least I'll be surprised if and when it does.

An "enemy from Samus's past" on that stage pretty much seals it I think. People just hold out hope that he'll also be playable. I don't think it's happening, but it would be cool.

You know that you can exchange "an enemy from Samus's past" with any assist trophy/character/pokemon and it would be technically true too.

My prediction for the next new comer reveal trailer:

A giant black shadow flies across the screen. Who could it be? Its Ridley! The giant purple space dragon swoops down to attack Samus, when a peanut hits him in his head and knocks him out. What's this?! Its Diddy Kong to the rescue! And Dixie Kong too! Dixie and Diddy monkey around, while Ridley fans cry out to Sakurai.

Don't see Ridley as a playable character happening either. But I wouldn't mind an asymmetric game mode similar to Evolve or something.

A far more plausible counterpoint is that there are multiple, visually distinct Ridleys (There's two actual Ridleys to begin with, and then there's the Meta Ridley form. There's also Robo Ridley and Ridley X to use, but it's unlikely they would use obscure incarnations like that.) One being a stage hazard doesn't necessarily preclude another incarnation from appearing as a playable character.
I'm pessimistic about his inclusion but the stage hazard thing isn't something that should be accepted as conclusive evidence.

Yep. The whole stage will rumble, a screeching sound will pierce the air, and a purple hue will be seen coming from inside the hole. Then, boom:

It's Waluigi.

Toon Link isn't playable because Toon Link shows up on the train etc etc

Fact is we won't know who is or isn't playable until they're either confirmed assist trophy, confirmed playable, or the game is out and the whole roster is unlocked.
