Agree with all points. If we get Totodile I will actively want to release it. I mean Totodile itself is okay, but Croconaw and Feraligatr are ugly as sin.

I would prefer Cyndaquil, but I certainly do approve of Chiko over Totodile.
Should we get Cyndaquil as starter there's two things to do: Teach it headbutt and teach it Thunderpunch. Trying to buy the Thunderpunch in that huge-ass mall will probably be a disaster, but IF we manage to do it, Cyndaquil has taken its biggest step to perfection.
At least those two moves stayed in the moveset of my Typhlosion for most of the game. Especially Thunderpunch. That one made the single Typhlosion run a breeze.

Typhlosion and Feraligatr are the best for this game. People would be FOOLS to pick Chikorita.

If we are lucky, we get a Totodile. Cyndaquil we can work with. Chikorita is weak against the majority of the gyms of Johto and neutral at best. If we pick it, some other Pokemon will probably become our team ace.
I don't really mind if we pick Chikorita, just for the hilarity of it all

The daycare should see some solid use in G/S
Pc's are apparently even more dangerous in second gen since release isn't it's own section anymore, it's bundled with the withdraw/ deposit sub- menus. Or so someone said, I can't check atm to see if that's true or not.
Our starter will likely be overshadowed by someone else on the team regardless of who we get. Even if we make the worst choice the most it can do is lead to more grinding.

I like meganium and love him in my party at the end game as a tank but leveling through the game he's terrible. Actually in the original games totodile is a shitty choice as well.
Edit: Fire is clearly the best choice but since when has that mattered for these runs. It will all be luck anyway.

Cyndaquil is the correct option.
I barely remember playing through Pokemon Silver back when I was a teenager, but I am super stoked for the nostalgia trip! 
Going to be interesting for me if this continues on into further gens... I skipped gens 3 & 4 and picked the series back up with B&W. It'll all be new for me if that happens.

Heh. For gen 3, I always find a lvl 4 ralts and switch level it until it learns confusion.
We gonna need to plan our team though. We need 2 water pokemon, 1 for surf/waterfall, another for whirlpool/flash HM slave (chinchou anyone?).
Would like to see starter, 2 water pokes (red gyarados lol), ampharos, piloswine and a bird cutter pokemon or something.

Cyndaquil is definitely the best option, for three reasons: firstly, if we're playing GS and not C, you don't have access to any other Fire types for a looong time - literally not until after Whitney. Secondly, Totodile is largely replaceable, as Gyarados is monstrous in Gen 2 and just does everything Feraligatr does better. Thirdly, Chikorita sucks.
There are other things to consider like moves they learn. Croconaw's Bite for instance will just chuck down Morty and that whole gym in one big swallow. And if we could teach it an ice move then we would have a much needed advantage against Dragon Type, which remains the biggest hurdle. ( Poison wont save us this time

the odds of catching gyarados are very very low
I always go Torchic until it evolves and gains double kick.
If we are playing Crystal Ampharos is a no go as Mareep isnt in it. Lanturn would be a great replacement but it comes around the fighting gym.
