The thing I don't understand is how I COULD totally buy the "time of day" defense, since midday is typically far less interesting to look at than a time/weather condition with lots of shadows and reflections.

But trailers are cut together from the best stuff on offer, typically. If the game really looks the same as the reveal, why not pick stuff that matches it?
