Games Where the Main Character Should Have Been Different

Expected a lot of ignorant posts in here claiming that Vaan was the main character of FFXII. Wasn't disappointed.

Game was an ensemble piece. There was no "main character", and if there was it would be Ashe, not Vaan.

I think Bayonetta would have sold more if it starred a male. I think everyone before the reveal wanted to play a character similar to Dante.

It's so sad that a game sell poorly just because main character is a woman. :(

Banjo Kazooie - Nuts 'N' Bolts. I've not played it myself, but I've heard that a lot of people like it. But after years of no Banjo Kazooie games after the Rare/MS buyout, having him show up in a game about building cars certainly didn't go down well with a lot of the fans, who wanted a platformer.

Banjo and Kazooie was fine being in Nuts and Bolts, the problems is that the game should have been given the spin-off treatment rather than being the third game in the series.

Did we mention Vaan yet?
More important, did we mention Vaan enough?
I see we haven't.
Having that PoS as PoV was terrible.

MGS 2- fuck Raiden.

Final Fantasy X- fuck Tidus.

Final Fantasy XII- fuck Vahn, and Penelo for that matter.

EDIT: I see we're all on the same page.

Not really. They had initially wanted to put in Balthier as the main dude, but the heads of the company forced them to add a younger guy as the protagonist. That is precisly why is so useless. The creators didn't really care about Vaan, so they made him a PoV character.
Incorrect. Basch was the original main character.

I'll Never forgive Rare/MS for what they turned Banjo into. Never

this sounds like a terrible idea. Besides Bayonetta IS pretty similar to old dante already.

What's wrong with bayonetta? she's a tonne of fun as a character.

He's saying that the game would have sold more, which does not necessarily mean that it would have been better.

Infamous 1 & 2. Liked the games, liked the normalish dude becomes a super hero concept, didn't care for Cole MacGrath. He always seemed to me like a dated 90s character from a mountain dew commercial or something except more boring. Also, what an incredibly boring character design.

DMC 4 should not have had Dante as playable, instead add more levels and abilities/weapons for Nero

Anyone who says mgs 2 is missing the point of mgs 2
Yep. Gotta wonder if everyone saying otherwise actually finished the game, or at least payed attention to what was going on. Whether you like Raiden or not, the entire game revolves around him, and can't exist without him.

I'll go ahead and throw in Franklin from GTAV. I know he isn't necessarily the "main character" because the story is supposed to be told from three PoVs, but he's just so damn boring and useless to the plot. Trevor and Michael are always the ones that have something interesting going on in the game, and Franklin just sort of meanders in from nowhere and says "Yea, I'm down for that too" or they'll be about to do something and Michael will be like "Oh yea, let me give Franklin a call." The only time he's needed is for the final choice, and really, it could have been anyone.

Eh, I think it's more that she's too sexy to the point where it's uncomfortable to play the game around others. A game like Tomb Raider can sell just fine.
And I say this as someone who loves Bayonetta.

Japanese dev makes this request/wish/dream and any like it, 110% impossible.

Has never and will never happen, ever.

You would not believe how badly I wanted to have adult Dajh and cool old man Sazh as party members when the trailers for XIII-2 came out and they showed adult Hope, and in the final game all of the supporting cast was basically ignored. So much potential lost because the writers had no cohesive vision (although I enjoyed the game)

Metroid: Other M. Not only was Samus mangled as a character, she was also completely superfluous to the events around her.

I don't get the hate either, because Raiden isn't anywhere close to the worst thing about MGS2.

To be honest, I wonder how much would have changed Xenoblade if Dunban was the main center of attention, with Shulk tagging along as his apprentice or something. Plot twists would have been very interesting to see.

Games where the main character either were boring, the story focused on someone else, the game didn't fit the main character or simply a side character was just more interesting.

A game that I'd use as an example to start things off is MGS2 with Raiden. The trailer for E3 2000 focused entirely on the Tanker Chapter and snake despite the majority of the game focusing on Raiden and the Plant Chapter. I personally wish MGS2 focused more on Snake than Raiden because I didn't really care all that much for Raiden at the time (Although MGR gave me a new outlook on him).

So what about you? What games spring to mind where the main character should have been someone else?

Never disagreed with a OP as much as this one. Swapping out Raiden as a character with Solid Snake would amount to MGS2 being a completely different game, I'd also guess that the tone and themes would be butchered entirely. You're basically asking for a whole new game, one that would probably be worse.

I don't think I'll ever understand the feverish attitude people have over Solid Snake as a character. He's the least interesting protagonist in the entire series.

This mentality is how and why MGS4 got made.

Every MGS game bar the original

I want to play as in prime, young Solid Snake, not Big Boss, not Raiden, not old Snake, not baby Snake, not the spanish El Solido Snake, not Cyber Raiden, not Jake the Snake, not one eyed Snake, not Snake on a Plane etc

Just regular ass Solid Snake, the bad ass from the original game, who goes on missions around the world

But that is just too simple, we cannot have that with this franchise, every game has to be a special unique snowflake and re write the whole canon to fit in

So you want Metal Gear Solid game to not be a Metal Gear Solid game?

Ace Attorney 4 put the spotlight too much on Phoenix already, but to then make him the main character of AA5 after passing the torch to Apollo was even worse.

FFXII shoulda been all Balthier
FFXII should've focused on basically anyone else other than Vaan. Well, Panelo wouldn't be any better and I'm not sure Fran was essential enough to the bigger picture or at least a colorful enough character, but Balthier/Ashe/Basch were all better suited for the MC role.

EDIT: Heh, I guess I wasn't the only one who thought the idea of Fran being MC was absurd. Though that wookie comment highlights it: she's definitely a sidekick-type character, so making her the lead is meaningless without a significant story rewrite. Kind of like why you don't make Robin the main character over Batman unless you make some huge changes like making him an independent super hero or taking on the mantle himself.

I haven't played Lords of Shadow 2 yet (just started Mirror of Fate) but everything I've heard suggests Dracula shouldn't have been the main character.

Dracula is basically the most powerful being on earth at this point in the story, but because they were carrying over the combat from the first game he had to be severely nerfed.

So if that's the case, why not just make the main character Simon or Alucard or introduce Richter, and just have segments where you play as overpowered Dracula?

From wwhat I hear the game's got far worse problems than that, so a less troubled development process would have yielded something much better.

I personally didn't like Raiden, didn't hate him, but just got annoyed by him through most of the game and didn't want to replay MGS2 anytime soon. I liked his evolution through the game, don't get me wrong, I just wish they handled Raiden's personality a bit better since he's the main guy.

Also, it was one of the few examples I could think of to start a topic like this, arguing Shadow over Sonic in Sonic 06 could be argued since his story is more interesting than Sonic's. But that's also a worse example to start the thread off with.

God of War. They honestly should have switched protags/rebooted at least one sequel ago. Though that story was already run into the ground by the end of 2.

Also, Mafia 2. The sidekick[I'm bad with names] should have been your character. The main had no personality at all. A silent protagonist that talks, lol.

That's the only ones in recent memory anyway.

ashe was a better lightning than lightning (which, of course, isn't saying much :) )...
