PES 2008 Wii: Official Thread of The Beautiful Game Has Been Reborn!

Defending definitely feels alien to those of us just used to holding PRESS on other versions, but I suppose if you could just press then it would be too hard to do anything as the attacker with this control method.

I dont know if I will ever achieve the level where I can play this game and do everything I could do in previous games, I was pretty darn awesome at those games and so far the experience with this game has been a lot more chaotic, thoughtful and ...well its almost a completely different ball game isnt it? For one, the lack of shooting control makes a big difference as does the change in dribbling. All the players have felt identical to me so far whereas previously you could recognise if you were controlling Ronaldo versus Van Nistelrooy for example. or when you did a shot you could FEEL the difference between certain players. This time theres a definite disconnect there.

So I can't say this is THE most accurate representation of football, as right now there's a lot of footballing aspects which this game doesn't aspire to. I would say that it represents certain flavours of football which have never been touched before and its what the series needed imo. Its relit my fire somewhat for PES anyway. Can't wait to start mastering it now.

Good lord this game has a huge learning curve! thought i was gettin the hang of it till i played a few games and got royally spanked!

Hmmm? From my experience, you can definitely feel and see the difference here too. And yeah, it's totally different from other football games, this concentrates on team play, free runs, creating space, passing, etc. and that's what real football is all about.

it definitely feels like that i am playing some pc real-time strategy game with a mouse ...i like the feeling, but i'm not yet so fast to attack and (especially) defend as (i think) it should be. I played 5 match online, but the others players seems as confused as myself.. that's good i think :lol

anyway, can you do in this game the same tricks (i don't know the exact english word.. it is "finte" in italian) that you do with l2 and r2 button on the dual shock 2 ?

Picked this up and it's the probably best sports game I've played. I've never been a huge soccer gamer, just casually pick up a title every few years, but man this is great. Hopefully more people in NA buy it so the online doesn't take forever to find someone. First match I played was virtually lag free.

A system like this would work great in other sports I think. A basketball game were you actually have to line up your cursor/eye with the hoop when shooting rather than the boring old hold a button/let go would be much more realistic. The ability to send guys on cuts/lead pass with the wiimote would be awesome too. Even Madden should adapt it, would actually have to time passes/lead like an actual QB rather than the tired icon system. Hopefully devs take notice! Anyone agree?

Is it possible to enter the Champions Cup mode with a real life squad? I tried starting as Barcelona but the squad is the usual PES one? Or is this something you have to unlock?

No, it defeats the purpose of Champions Road altogether.

Yup the thing about champions road is to unlock new characters. You even have to unlock the possibility of getting better players. In the beginning you just can get 1 star players etc. Which wouldnt make sense if your team is already made of 4-5 star players.
but hey if you want to play with Barca just take on a normal cup.

Question to all guys playing regularly already. On which difficulty setting are you playing? And what feeling are you getting out of playing in that difficulty? Or how well are you able to perform?

I've played about 10 games on champions road so far and I'm winning about 8-0. I started on 3 stars though so I guess I should increase the difficulty.

3/5 was way too easy. but on 4/5 i am having my problems from time to time. Btw champions road difficulty is increasing in time. You will recognize it when you move up the cups.

I've only played one game at regular level (3/5) and got my ass handed to me (free match), I dodn't even finish the match since at around 10 mins left it was 2-9 so I didn't see the point in finishing :lol . This happened mostly because my defense sucks, so at amateur level I now win pretty easily but my games generally ends with around 10-5 or so, so I think in the next few free matches I'm going to just try and stick to defense to train on it.

EDIT: Anyone have any fun goals? My funniest goal was me hitting the goalpost and then using the goalkeepers butt to bounce it back into the goal :D

Where are the european players with european Wii's to play with online =(

Can't stop playing this...it's 3 hours past midnight and I'm still going to proceed to the next match in Champions Road O_o

Really getting the hang of defensing now, it's all about team play, marking and double marking the opponent and covering for through runs, at least at my current level. Fantastic game, can't wait to get myself hooked online at the end of next week. I wish the replay was longer though, I've made some very satisfying build ups :)

Well i'm on a PAL Wii but considering the different levels we are at I don't think I'm much of a match for you so the game would probably be pretty uninteresting =/

But I'd be up for a game tomorrow if you're free.

EDIT: ^I think "covering for runs" is my main problem in defense, I watch way too much ball than what's good for me (ironic considering how often I yell at the TV when watching real games for that fault of the players).

Well I love to think of the smash football games. I immediately got better after playing and watching some tactics snd tricks from them. The good thing is that you can talk about it or ask the others how they do stuff. I would really love to have that experience here too =)
Just tell me when youre ready to go.

Guess I'll pick this one up after all, I'm expecting at least GC-level visuals from previous WE GC games.

Are Miis only available in Exhibition matches? Or can you use them in the other modes too like Champions Road?

Picked it up today, I got in the flow for offense pretty quickly, but like most others I'm still getting adjusted to defense. Finished the practice league in Champions Road so far.

The Mii option for matches is amusing, but like MLB Power Pros there's no way to specifically choose Miis or make specific Mii teams. Why is that?? :(

Is the WiFi region locked on this?

This must be the first game in the series I'm actually interested in. I'm not a football fan at all, but the controls sound so interesting, I'd love to give it a go if nothing else.

I'll be getting this next week (crosses fingers for the post to be hasty with the delivery). I'll probably be ready to give online a go next weekend. Iirc you're from Germany as well so ping should be good too.

Got the game, but haven't had time to put in the hours yet. I'll be away from home next week, but after that I'm up for some online stuff if someone wants a challenge. :D

Three stars feels way too easy, mostly due to the idiotic opposition defenders. Gotta try 4 stars as soon as I have the time.

All in all, feels a bit overwhelming, but I'm very intrigued by the whole concept of being able to control your whole team. A brilliant way to utilize the wiimote!

Edit: I'm in Euroland (Finland).

On a Pal Wii?
Would you like to share you friendscode with us? ;)
There is a thread about that in the matchup forum.

And as I said to get some enjoyment out of the difficulty 4/5 is the right difficulty for me. won all matches easily in the first cup in champions road but it got harder.

So is there any benefit to keeping young players to develop in Champions Road? Is there yearly progression at all in this mode? Or does being young just grant them a bigger XP boost in general?

Also, on occasion I'll have a loose ball moving around and none of my nearby players will react to it. Do I need to force the issue in these cases and drag someone towards the area?

On the manual, in Italian (the only language in the manual), it says that attacking from left to right you have to press left on the d-pad to make the team more offensive and press right to make it more defensive.

It doesn't make much sense to me, is it a translation mistake or does it really work that way?

That's what I do. But I'm still quite a newbie, I don't know if there is a better way.

Im about 25 hours in, lets see if we can answer us our questions >__>
Nope Id suggest getting better star players as soon as you get. I dont think they develop faster or anything. And even if they would you should sort them out if theyre too bad. Because every player can just have 6 skills. So faster development doesnt make any sense. My entire team has reached the 6 skills mark already. The only thing I can do to develop further are new players.

Also, on occasion I'll have a loose ball moving around and none of my nearby players will react to it. Do I need to force the issue in these cases and drag someone towards the area?

Time for criticism guys. The logical thing for Konami to do would be having a button press where nearby players would run to the ball. ESPECIALLY because the drag a player to the ball method isn intended to really work. You see the circle around a player? Thats the field where he should react to the ball and enemy player when they step in that area. An for him to recognize the ball he seriously has to stumble upon the ball and shortly after he realizes he is supposed to take the ball with him. Look at the animation. I dont think it should work that way.
If there is no other way to do this then this heavily sucks. It happened more than one time that the ball was lying around on the field and 4 players passed not interested in the ball at all. If they know neither play can take a benefit out of that one but its not "really" good for the games flow.
So lets hope for its availibility and find the magical button.

On the manual, in Italian (the only language in the manual), it says that attacking from left to right you have to press left on the d-pad to make the team more offensive and press right to make it more defensive.

The D-pad is used to send your team into that direction.I dont think it makes them more aggressive or reaction mre defensive. Just putting them on other positions.
Press the d-pad down and you entire team will step 3-4 steps down the screen. If youre playing from left to right then a press on d-pad left will get your team a few steps back to your goal. While a press on d-pad right they move forward to the other goal.
And if youre playing right then the d-pad direction is inverted.
Actually there is a small onscreen map when you press the d-pad with 5 different selections. normal, offensive, very offensive , defensive, very defensive.
I will play around a bit with that and tell you guys whether for me it makes some serious difference.

Must be a typo. The english version says press right to make your squad more offensive (when attacking from left to right).

The only thing that comes to my mind wrt to this, is that double-clicking A on an empty spot of the field the nearest character will run there.

I think that's what the manual was trying to say. But I haven't tried it myself, either.

I just love this feature. Actually it's the most convenient one I've seen in a soccer game. You can not only make your team move from defense to midfield to offense, but also do it on top of the field, center, bottom of the field. It's deeper than in other games, and very very easy to use in action.

maxmars? a new challenger approaches =p

Okay there is some difference. First when you are playing offensively they move forward once you have the ball and you have more of your players to use for offensive play.
After you lost the ball everybody will run back to there "NORMAL" position.
If youre playing defensively though they will likely stay on their positions. I guess they are getting tired much faster in the offensive mode. So take that into consideration while playing around =)

Double tap A on/around the ball to free run the closest player? Don't know how well that works, I just started playing today.

EDIT: maxmars beat me to it, I see.

Wish I could, I'm not at home right now. But one of these evenings, possibly even this evening, I'll be online. I can't promise anything because too many things tend to happen, but on average every other evening I'm online. [normally I play BWII or MOH2, but I'm adding this to my online dietary regime]

The next version for the wii is going to be so epic

I hope this game will sell as it deserves...a few millions of copies!
The more I play, the more is difficult to return to old controls: I tried Euro2008 and the gameplay seems to me very old...I am constanly fighting with my players not moving as I would. PES Wii has some flaws, like the basic controls on shoots and penalities, but it is -by far- the most refreshing experience in years in this kind of games.

Yup. So I have to pick out every european player to play with. And there will be no GRAND GAF Tournament.

Online is a little shitty.

its even worse. Its not just "region locked" which means you cant play a european game on a american console. No... its also wifi region locked (what is the correct term for that?). European players are stuck with european players then. Well more correctly People with european Wiis are stuck playing other people playing with european Wiis.
There seem to be quite some european Gaffers who have an american Wii.

Anyway here is some stuff I wrote in the Matchup forum. I thought it would be nice to read here too for people interested in the game and what it produces online =p

Thanks for the matches Kurosawa =)

You have no idea how my heart stopped every time c.ronaldo got the ball >_<

We had 3 matches and all were VERY close.

Germany/Toma (2) - Portugal/Kurosawa (1)

Germany/Toma (2) - Portugal/Kurosawa (1)

Germany/Toma (2) 4 - Portugal/Kurosawa (2) 6 after penalty kick

We started the first match and naturally didnt knew what we were getting into. What I noticed was that Kurwosawa cleverly uses the freerun to maintain complete control over the position of his players which made it hard to steal his passes. In the first game I got quite a few but then he noticed and changed his style to more freerun. >__>
Anyway the first goal was mine :D
I scored that with a chip shot =p i dont know why but I like the idea that my first goal in a game with someone here was like that. Its awesome to see your player running towards the goalie and letting the ball slip slightly above him while he tries to catch it on the ground . And then it just slowly rolls into the goal while I raised my arms in triumph.
(I didnt)
What I just recognized. You could say that a person using freerun a lot is more effective than someone who doesnt. Which isnt quite true. I rarely use it just with the A Button to get someone elsewhere. Of course I use pressing B to send someone and immediately pass to him, all the time.
The problem with freerun is that if you are sending 3 midfielders with A to a position you wish 2 of them (who dont get the ball) are just plain standing there and wont do anything even if the ball lies right next to them because you gave them the order to go THERE.
And the second reason why I am not using this very much is because it costs time. While having corner kicks or free kicks you have all the time you need to prepare but to send players in game where you want to you have to leave the one with the ball vulnerable.

Just some thoughts and observations. I thought I would share them with you.

scenario 1: Player 2s defender has the ball and your are sending 3 midfielders freerun while you are walking slowly forward and send the ball to one of them. The other 2 are standing still in this scenario which means player 2 is effectively playing with 9 players on the field. They are still there and you can pass them the ball but they wont run forward on their own.
You could still send them forward but then they wouldnt make a decision on their own and you are left multitasking 2 more people maybe not involved with your attack because if player 1 would steal the ball he could run past them without them moving an inch.

scenario 2: Player 2 is attacking and while the player with the ball is keeping dribbling he has to take his cursor somwhere else to use it. Which isnt a problem if the one with the ball keeps running with the ball for a long long time. But thats hard to manage and you have to catch the opponents defense off guard. The problem is that you have no control over the player with the ball when you are sending players elsewhere with the A Button. Thats the reason why I am staying on one player most of the time (keep pressing b to send someone while still running, controlling the player AND be able to pass is a godsend for my playstyle) You have more control over him. You can tell him to stop or to dribble elsewhere. But when other players are used with A the focus shifts and you cant control the one with the ball.

Of course sending people down there where you want has some huuuuuge advantages especially when it comes down to players you want to pass the ball to (what I am using B for when I am sending ONE player who gets the ball) and Kurosawa also scored a goal thanks to his freerun abilities. But I guess its not obligatory to use on every player on the field. Lets see which style gets better as time goes by =)

Oh btw. I played a loooot of games in singleplayer and I think I got used to goals there >__>
I was having a freekick on the left side in front of the penalty box and the one player I wanted to pass it to stood right to the "wall" of Kurosawas players. I send him to the left using and keep pressing B, he ran behind the "wall", took the ball, turned right and shoot it into the right upper corner of the goal.

Is it condemnable to really feel awesome in such a moment? >__>

Awesome Games =) Thx Kuro.

And... C. Ronaldo... He made the most ignorant, lazy goal in all three games. Just stood in font of the penalty box not moving anything, got the ball, stood there for another second viewing the birds as they flew by, moved his leg because he seemed to stumble upon something and the ball kept rolling slooowly into the left lower corner of the goal.

>___> Konami are so awesome... they transferred my disliking towards C.Ronaldo RIGHT into the game.

:lol

Which is VERY shitty. I understand them saying they dont want bad guys insulting small innocent kids. But if both players would klick YES after asked whether they want to be friends I dont see a problem with that.
Well I still think its the "small innocent children" problem. Other people dont have to be nice even when you are having a good match with them.

...

Which shouldnt matter because you cant talk to them and they cant send you nasty stuff to your message board because the games and the consoles friendscode are different.
Someone should tell them. Guess they havent figured that out until now.

Oh and thats the reason I am looking for Gaffers to play with.

Really want to pick this up now, but im having a hard time finding it near me in London. The supermarkets (ASDA, Tesco, Sainsburys) do it for a fantastic £27.50 but they are sold out everywhere. I have managed to source one today by phone, but they cant reserve, so my trip after work may or may not be wasted.
The usual suspects such as GAME and Toys R Us are charging £40+, at that price they can get stuffed. funnily enough they have plenty of stock! :lol
