#DarkSoulsDowngrade and #YOULIED \\ a.k.a You got some splainin' to do, Namco

Did you hear about this?

People on the Console versions are reporting 25-30s load times...with the Disc version. 10-12s with the Download version.

That's insane. The disc load times are greater than DS1 or Demon's Souls, by a long shot. The download versions are about the same as DS1 / Demon's Souls on disc.

And Dark Souls 1 PC, on my SSD, has all of 3s load time. You also can't level up at a bonfire anymore...and whatnot...

Seems bad man.

I can confirm this, my friends have the disc version and I bought the digital, seems like they're dealing with 20+ second load screens where mine never goes beyond 13 seconds. That's a pretty big difference in a game like this.

I'm running a SSHD 500Gb drive, so that probably helps even more but still, the game installs to HDD when you have the disc version. It shouldn't be this much of a disparity.

Seems bad man. 25-30s load times? I can't think of any game, besides the original Crysis, to ever give me such long load times. Even on Console games, I'm hard pressed to think, unless it's the first time starting the game up. How could From botch the job this badly?

Did they say "Oh, well, PS3 / Xbox 360 are done, so let's throw this out and be done with it."?
Disc version here and it's true. I HATE having to warp back to majula to level up cos it takes so long to do it all. Wish it was just at bonfires still, makes no sense mechanically to have it at the hub

I won't have my hands on DS2 360 until Monday but didn't DS1 on console have a ton of problems at launch too? IIRC netcode was a shambles and Blightown ran even worse (I never got to see it in that state because FROM dropped a patch the day I made my way into the area for the first time)

Hopefully FROM will have the worst of it patched in the next couple of weeks.

I've being avoiding the main DS2 thread because of spoilers but I'd like to ask how good is the 360 version? Does that have input lag and big frame rate dips like the PS3 version?

EDIT wow those load times

I watched my cousin play the 360 version while I played the PS3 version. The 360 version seems to runs smoother but has screen tearing. PS3 version runs less smoothly but no screen tear.

With 30 second load times, not leveling up at a Bonfire, hjaving to warp there(30s), move to the person(up to you), warp back(30s), you've just spent 1M+ some time to level up, rather than being able to do it at any bonfire...

With these kind of load times, it's not nice. Also, I hear loading from take takes the same aount of time, while in previous games it took 10s, maybe.

I guess but how often are you levelling up lol. You're going to be warping back there to buy new things and stuff any way.

I've gotta say, after playing the game a bit more, I'm kinda stunned. I thought a lot of these graphical/lighting/torch complaints may have been overblown before, but now I've actually reached an area in the game which is undeniably made so that you have to use your torch. I can hardly see the ground in front of me in some places because its so dark, but there's enough faint light from your character and far off where its still playable should you not have a torch... In other words, it succeeds in implementing the new mechanic people are complaining got left out, while actually making it playable (though much harder) for those who can't or don't want to use it, which is great.

Actually playing this game and then coming to gaf to see this and the other downgrade thread has left me feeling like all of these complaints are incredibly over exaggerated, even more so than I had originally thought. For the most part, everything about this game looks and plays as well as the original Dark Souls for consoles, with only slight variations. I can still understand the people who are upset over the misleading nature of the promotion, but man... I can't believe how much people are going overboard with some of their other complaints.

To be fair, they did release lots of bad looking screenshots and videos before release, and you guys played the beta. We were just in denial!

If they wanted to make leveling up at hubs make sense, warping shouldn't have been implemented. If you had to make your way to a hub to level up, that puts more importance on it, but since you can just warp there, they might as well let you do it at the bonfire... And of course, especially if the load times are this bad.

Have you calibrated your TV correctly?

You know, coming here and saying that all complaints are incredibly over-exaggerated after we posted so much proof in form of video and screenshot comparisons is a bit... much.

It's still unacceptable. I don't understand your logic.

The load times suck sure. But having to travel back to Majula to level isn't a big deal. Even if you could do it at bonfires, you're still travelling there any way to deal with merchants blacksmith etc, and you'll probably be doing that more often than levelling later in the game.

I guess but how often are you levelling up lol. You're going to be warping back there to buy new things and stuff any way.

The ridiculous thing is that the chick you level up at is at a 1 bonfire, so there really is no reason to not be able to upgrade at every bonfire. All it does is make me load twice every time and no more.

Have you calibrated your TV correctly?

The complaints are exaggerated. I'm not talking about the downgrade from what FROM was promoting, that's still fair game, but people have been going really far and making it sound like the game was horrible compared to the first game and that the torch/lighting stuff was completely removed. All that seems to be untrue based on what I've played. Also, did you forget about people comparing it to N64 or PS2 era graphics? It's ridiculous.

So a graphics downgrade prevents a game from being a goty contender? It's still an incredible game.

The game wasn't what it was advertised to be. It's borderline Colonial Marines level of deception, as far as I'm concerned. That should disqualify it on principle alone. GAF would have sure as hell done the same thing for Watch Dogs, had the game been released without revealing its graphics downgrade.

Where did people say that? It's not subject of this thread anyway. Many in this thread even said the game is good and lives up to the scores. It's just the graphical aspects where the game lacks.

and that the torch/lighting stuff was completely removed.

Not removed but it became drastically obsolete because you can still see in areas which were supposed to be dark.

Not ridiculous at all.

Dude, let's get real here. Are you just defending/dismissing this because you're a fan (I'm a huge Souls fan myself but this doesn't make me blind or apologetic about the obvious downgrade) or do you really not understand what's going on here?

god every image posted just makes it more and more impossible not to be angry over this. Look at that shit! There's a fucking alligator demon in awesome fire pit in one shot! The other shot the alligator demon is in derp! The other shot is like a parody shot from some laughable trashware developer!

Yes, that is correct. On average you have to wait 20 seconds every time (disc version). The longest time I've clocked so far was 42 seconds (respawning once I got killed by the
Executioner's Charriot).

feels like? get that equivocation BS out of here. it absolutely does not consistently run 10 lower. for the most part it's noticeably smoother.

No, you obviously cannot judge framerates

Ds2 runs about 10 fps lower than ds1 in most areas. However when ds1 drops fps it drops lower, only happens n a few areas such as blighttown though. Ds1 is a smoother experience in overall:(

On ps3 that is

Sure, there was a downgrade/deceit/whatever you want to call it, but it's still a beautiful looking game; and on the whole, I'd say it's technically superior to its predecessor.

Things like the cloth physics combined with some of the scenery is up there with the best this gen, visually speaking.

Have you tried playing the game for yourself rather than just being outraged at poor quality images? If you can make the tiny mental leap required to get over looking at crappy stills and play the game, you might find that you'll enjoy yourself more than venting about it.

I sympathise with the general premise of this thread and the previous one, but a lot of posts seem to be just about dumping on the game, which is not exactly fair. It still looks pretty great, aside from some questionable texture work in some areas. And I have to agree with Edzi that much of the lighting complaints are overblown. It's still a functional and at times necessary mechanic. It's not as pronounced as in the earlier builds, but it's there, it works, and it looks beautiful.

In any case, I hope you guys get the answers you want from Namco / FROM, as it's a issue that deserves an explanation.

I fully agree with this. I would love for the game to look like the early videos, but I gave the game a chance myself and I've been loving it. Doesn't seem any different from the other games really. I don't remember the console version of Dark Souls 1 looking so amazing that they blow this out of the water. In fact, I played it the day before this came out just to check. I don't see a real difference.

And, to me, the torch mechanic is something i don't quite get. So you get attacked by surprise a few times if you don't use the torch. That actually happened to me in The Gutter. I didn't know what was going on without the torch. And I really couldn't see either console delivering on the visuals. Especially after playing the beta.

Speaking of the beta, it feels like they improved on things. Felt like I was floating when walking before, now I don't. There are several things it feels like they improved on.

If they do reintroduce the effects in the PC version and possibly a PS4/X1 version, I will be glad to grab one of those.

Yeah I hated the enemies in
No Man's Wharf
. I didn't realize at that point that you can toggle at campfires to light the torch. I kept looking for sconces everywhere.

Everyone just keeps throwing this picture up here, as if it's indicative of the graphical quality for the entire game. It is not. You've picked one area with one poor texture. If I wanted to (I don't) or I had the time (I don't have that either), I could probably find a texture that shitty looking in Crysis 3.

Guess what? It's a video game, and it's not always going to look photo-realistic. Especially in areas that the player isn't necessarily focusing on anyway.

Just accept the fact that the developers had to make some sacrifices in the graphics to make the game run smoothly (enough) on 8 year old consoles. Then accept the fact that those sacrifices aren't a big enough deal to warrant a some kind of a press conference by Namco/FROM to tell you they reduced the texture resolution of the lava in one area.

Dude, let's get real here. You're making hysterics over something that's just not a big deal. Nobody is being "apologetic." We're just saying you sound like an idiot raising your pitchfork and torch over some graphical changes that you should have expected anyway.

Stop assuming that everyone on here who disagrees with you is somehow blinded by fandom. Some of us just plain think you're wrong, regardless of being a Dark Souls fan.

The image is from this video I made. You can compare for yourself in motion. I honestly think the game looks really disappointing. Just overall, the game was trying to look more realistic, and it didn't pull it off, so it comes off as more unattractive than the other titles in the series. I think DeS and DaS are pretty good looking games too.

So again with the disc load times I have a question. Why has Sony still not given us the ability to choose to fully install games like the 360 has offered for 5 years now? It's obviously possible as I own the AC Ezio Trilogy disc and 2 of the 3 games on there fully install and use the disc as DRM. Why is that not the norm as an OPTION?

The DS2 loading times are insane and could have been avoided by allowing us to do a full install. It also makes me really pissed that leveling can't be done at the bonfire anymore.

I'm getting the feeling that From would have been better off delaying the game a few months to make sure it actually played and ran well. Extremely long loading screens, worse performance than DS1, and being forced to drop a gameplay-intergral graphical feature at the last minute all point to a release that didn't spend enough time in the oven.

Guess what? It's a video game, and it's not always going to look photo-realistic. Especially in areas that the player isn't necessarily focusing on anyway.

I do apologize if I am wrong but I believe you have missed the larger issue. You see how the first image uses the flames as the light source, keep in mind this was advertised as a game mechanic. Making the choice between shield or torch, some enemies are suppose to react to the flames, some environments could be set on fire lighting the surrounding area so you can equip a shield or a second weapon again. I believe in an early interview it was stated that in some places fire can be lit and it will eventually die out forcing the player to get through the zone before the light goes out.

Now.... take a look at the second screenshot, textures aside, you can see a soft light present around all objects. This soft light pretty much makes the whole light/fire mechanic obsolete. The issue here is that this was a selling point and it is disappointing to many who were expecting gameplay similar to the first screenshot. Some even thought that the lighting mechanics could get better than those shown in early previews since they will have time to polish the game. How wrong they were...

I blame the hardware. There is only so much that can be done.

And yet allowing the player to fully install the game would have shaved 66% off the game's loading times which didn't require new hardware or a delayed game at all. Why wasn't this done?

You can't install the full game on Xbox 360?

I have no clue about PS3. Does anyone the exact time difference between digital and disk?

I'm an idiot because I couldn't see this massive downgrade coming? If so I blame the videos we've got shown all the way right before release which all had the lighting intact.
No way in hell I'm wrong.

The game definitely doesn't have 30 seconds long loadings on my fat 360 after installation. More like 10 seconds...

You really gotta love the "You should have expected this" crowd. Really? Really?! The last 3 multiplat games I purchased on PS3 never had a drop off in quality this severe. So why in the flying fuck was I supposed to just expect this shit? Ridiculous.

The only expectation I had was what Fromsoft was putting in my face through their advertising campaign. And the game that released at retail sure as shit wasn't that...

The game looks nowhere near as good as it was advertised, and yet it's no big deal? I'm not talking about a slight graphical downgrade. They removed the biggest new feature that they've been touting since the game was announced, they removed most of the dynamic lighting and replaced it with barely anything, and worst of all? It was never mentioned. People didn't even know that they were missing out on the new lighting system until they bought the game! Heck, even the official website and Amazon still have the pre-release screenshots up as advertising! That is in no way okay.

And don't think that I'm just some entitled brat who only cares about graphics. Dark Souls 2 is great. Despite some really annoying issues that bug the heck out of me, I love the game to pieces. I've put well over 40 hours into it, and it'll most likely make it into my top games of the year list. But in no way is this huge downgrade, or silence regarding it, okay. It's messed up.

I have no clue about PS3. Does anyone the exact time difference between digital and disk?

I was speaking about PS3 because they're the console that doesn't give players the option to install games. 360 has allowed it for nearly every game for the past 5 years so I wasn't talking about that version.

At the top of this very page are times. 10-12 seconds load times on installed versions. 25-30 seconds load times on PS3 physical copies which are the only ones not playable directly from a HDD.

My question is why after 5 years of the 360 allowing it do we still not have that capability on PS3?

It makes the physical copy on PS3 far and away the most inferior version of this game.

I don't understand how you've played the game for 40 hours and can say that the dynamic lighting has been removed. The dynamic lighting is everywhere, grab a torch, run around with it, light some sconces. The only issue I have with it is that it seems the gamma is calibrated a bit too high, which makes it less pronounced.

Gamma is definitely higher. I can't even make the dragon disappear on the calibration tool. The bar is set to minimum and the dragon is still visible. That didn't happen in DS1. My calibration bar was slightly below the halfway mark in that game to make the dragon disappear.

Problem is, there are entire sections of the game plastered with horrible textures:

Yeah, shitty pic quality, I know. Anyone could upload Hi-res photos of those same areas and it won't change the fact that they look hideous.

It is remarkable how well publishers, developers and console manufacturers have whipped some gamers into line, so much so that they run defense on the indefensible. I just can't even relate to the psychology of this.

I mean, let's just take a minute to awe at just what this statement of your says. It suggests that we all should have just expected that a game which had been advertised a certain way right up until the eve of its launch would be downgraded, and that it's ridiculous to get angry over it. Again, let's pause to highlight the absurdity. You expected gamers to predict that the game would be downgraded, despite all the media suggesting it was an entirely different way, because... why? We all should have expectations for what these systems can produce? On systems where games like Uncharted 2 and God of War 3 exist? Where titles like Alan Wake and Halo 4 are a thing?

Let's even assume for a moment you actually believe this nonsense. You're actually willing to put the onus for this 'problem' on the gamers who are surprised by it, rather than the company who willfully deceived potential customers up until the eve of its release?

I mean, christ, you're so far off point it's like a comic tragedy. Nobody is expecting a 'photo realistic' game, they are expecting what has been advertised for ages now as a product containing these features. What was advertised before was never photorealistic or close. It was a game with an impressive lighting engine, one that apparently was going to tie directly into the gameplay. Now, no matter how they got around it, the point is it's not the same experience. It simply is not. And to try to ask your fellow gamers to put down the pitchforks because we all should have been psychics not only pushes responsibility away from who deserves it, but it's self-defeatist tripe.

I'm a massive Dark Souls fan, but I'm sorry, this shit is unacceptable. I don't care if it may still be a decent product, it doesn't matter. If I am going to buy a product, I expect to be informed as to what it is all about well before its release. I don't expect to be told I am getting a certain type of product only to be completely surprised when it is an entirely different sort of thing. Dark Souls II was one of my most anticipated games of all time, but see I don't play companies or walk any lines. They fucked up, and now they need to make it right. And yes, a press release would be a nice start.

Explained it better than I could.

Problem is, there are entire sections of the game plastered with N64/PS1 era textures:

Yeah, shitty pic quality, I know. Anyone could upload Hi-res photos of those same areas and it won't change the fact that they look hideous.

I'm pretty sure the same can be said about Dark Souls 1

Damn this thread really put a dampen on my intention of purchasing this on PS3... planning to make this my first serious entry to Souls game (only played Demon's and Dark Souls for like, 10 minute each) and this game seems... or I guess seemed... cool, but...

Damn. Really mood-dampening stuff in here.
