I blame myself. I blame my freaking self. Just yesterday I deleted my 30+ hour FFXIII save to start a new game, thinking "oh, lets give it another shot. The gameplay was pretty fun once it opened up."

Still not sure what's wrong with Lightning. She isn't some amazing protagonist but I don't get what's so bad about her. In terms of videogame characters, especially.

She's unremarkable, has no real personality or traits other than 'super srs' and 'is a super good soldier or something'. The characters in the game praise her and look up to her like she can do no wrong. There are so many other characters that are better than her even in 2013 and even in games that I assume Japan received and played (who am I kidding, they were all on their mobiles/handhelds or playing waifus with lightning-chan).

Hell, there are even better characters in the FFXIII series like Sazh.

Also, it's kinda sucky how she can win best character of 2013 when she debuted years ago and has received next to no character development (apart from an apparent reason for her utter blandness).

If she were a man you could directly compare her to someone like Marcus Fenix or any other bland, macho, male power fantasy character with no real personality.

The 2nd ended on a clifffhanger, it needed to be resolved and it's in the third game that Lightning gets pretty rad character development. For the uninformed masses, the games are self aware of Lightning's lack of emotional response and seriousness, there are psychological and motivational reasons behind it.
