First Roller Coaster Tycoon 4 is a microtransaction mania for mobile and now this...

Is that strawberry jam?

She's been ranked at the top of numerous FF Japan polls before so it's not all that surprising as her character really appeals to that market, I think Lightning Returns put up respectable WW sales certainly far from a bomb given its (presumed) budget. I don't dislike Lightning I'm" just indifferent towards her, she's alright but I can see why she has her followers. That said, at least Zero and Alisa got some love.

I'm' really surprised she beat Hatsune Miku though, I wouldn't think that's an easy feat in Japan.

So have interesting tidbits... Her competition...

http://2chyflabcom.blog.jp/archives/1000644434.html

2nd place was MONOKUMA

3rd place was Hatsune Miku.

BWAHAHAHAHAH. Oh lord. XD

Further amusement,

4th place was Zero from Drag-on Dragoon 3

5th place was Neptune/Purple Heart

6th place was God Eater's Alisa

7th place was Yuna and Raiden for a tie.

9th was Rorona

and 10th is Rean from Sen no Kiseki

SO THERE YOU HAVE IT FOLKS

I'm not expecting Purple Heart in this list, but hey, I ain't even mad.

Yuna should have been higher, though..

You gotta consider that LR: FFXIII is a new entry, whilst FFX/X-2 is an enhanced remake. Considering Japan is one of the few countries where HD remasters in general don't really do all that well, for it to outsell a new game is just..............

Even if you compare the original PS2 release of FFX-2, it outsold both FFXIII-2 and LR combined by quite a margin.

Different era. :/ How many games in general in the PS3 era have outsold FFX-2? Also they really marketed the hell out of X/X-2 imo.

o hayyy sushi

I think that is the main reason why people are questioning the list. She is popular that her game bombed even in Japan.

Just a tiny correction: Miku came in second.

Also, y'all are just jealous because you can't be as kawaii and kakkoii as Lightning-san.

Just saying but the game didn't really bomb... many console games struggle to sell as much as LR did.

Oops, made that mistake when relaying info :x

Except Cloud and Squall suck too
Squall does suck. Alot. I'm (re)playing VIII now and he is just.. ugh.

Cloud, though. Cloud's whole character progression is a thing of beauty. Having replayed it sooo many times, its clear he suffers from PTSD. He struggles heavily with his repressed memories, his new persona often clashing with his old self, an inward turmoil of having the strength to protect those around him but push them away, or relying on them and admitting your own weakness, coming to terms with one's own failures, having to constantly be reminded of how much you have lost, that you can't do it on your own. Once he came to terms with his past, he was able to overcome his affliction and triumph against the its source. It can get pretty deep, its really quite riveting.

Each character goes through a variation on this but Cloud's is filled with the most loss.

That's totally fair, but people loved the hell out of Cloud.

Yeah, in like... 1998? Is that the bar to hold your protagonist to? An angsty main character from 1998 even though there've been better, more interesting and more complex characters since then? I'm not saying there weren't good characters back then, but I'd say game writing (atleast for games that emphasize their story so much like Final Fantasy) should be held to a higher standard than just emulating what was cool over 15 years ago.

Japan is just fucked.

Why lightning???? As much as i liked lightning, one game was more than enough. Making a trilogy about lightning literally killed her for me.

And japan not having anymore good games makes up the rest why lightning got voted as the best character of the year 2013. iam just ashamed as a gamer.

If she were a man no one would say a word about how she acts. For some reason if women in JPRGs aren't bubbly, annoying, high pitched fap machines people have a problem with them.

People give male FF leads shit all the time. Tidus and to an extent Squall are both running jokes on the internet

I'm actually surprised she beat Hatsune Miku. I think we can count that as a victory of some kind.

Vocaloids scare me.

Holy ****. People are ****ed because they like a character you dont? I dont like her, but I dont moan about it or discourage a group of individuals opinions.

Its like, if NEOGAF hates something, the world does to ESPECIALLY when it comes to Square. SMFH.

Squall is an orphan teenager with abandonment issues, his character is incredibly human and extremely realistic.
Besides having no parents, his only family in the orphanage "abandoned" him, he was a child when these things happened, these events left traumatic scars on his psyche forever more, leading him to social isolation and trust issues. He is still a good guy at heart that learns to cope with his problems and he has a gradual and organic change from grumpy angsty douche to a legitimately cool dude with a new outlook on life.
It seems like people have selective narrative comprehension to the things they like and f the rest..

It is given that is FF and supposedly Lighting is more popular than Yuna.

I think her design is probably more popular for sure.

If it helps put things into perspective, they also gave out game awards and LR came in #4 to God Eater 2 (#1), Dragon's Crown (#2), and Sen no Kiseki (#3). FFXIV:ARR also ranked in a #9 tie with Summon Night for the PSP.
