So for people that actually have played quite a bit of PVP, is it still a rollie-pollie backstabathon or is there actual sparring in this one?

From my experience so far there is little backstabbing. I still try to go for it if I get the opening but it's easier to avoid them. It's been pretty fun so far.

I've done
rats
and
belltower
. I've had one person lagstab me so far, but the connections are a lot better than DS1. The fights last a lot longer due to the levels in both the cavern and belltower, allowing folks to heal. It feels different, while at the same time, much the same, if that makes any sense. Might just be because it's not the Burg/Forest/Oolacile anymore.

This game started off so slow for me, I almost returned it to Gamefly. But now, about 8 hours later, I'm really getting into it and my build is starting to take form.

Still can't equip a soul arrow. Bonfire says not enough attunement slots but I leveled my INT to 10 and I have an unfilled top box in my HUD. Thought that is where souls arrows go...

What gives?? Am I missing a catalyst or staff to equip a simple soul arrow.

Any help pls much appreciated. Just want one basic magic spell for my dex character.

Did you join the Covenant of Champions by chance?

I believe CoC increases the chance of being invaded. It definitely doesn't decrease.

There are a lot of people playing, and although people are invading not everyone will see it. If you're in the PVP mood, I would recommend joining a covenant for that purpose. Even Blue Sentinel dueling is pretty active (because you can't level up in it any other way buahaha).

This
Belfry Gargoyles 2.0
fight is ludicrously difficult, and the room beforehand routinely fills with invaders.

Indeed. I decided to come back to this after I beat the game. As you can continue to do mop up and play as long as you want before going into NG+. Not wasting all of my resources on that part.

No, I am currently in the Blue Sentinels (I think that's the name; the one after
Old Dragonslayer
), which I joined hoping to do some co-op PVP, but I have never been summoned (yes, I'm wearing the ring).

Your attunement stat needs to be at least 10 I believe.

Don't you need to level up ATN? So it opens up slots

EDIT: Beaten

Yeah I was wearing that ring and I'm still in the covenant but haven't been called. I hope in the coming months more people join the Way of the Blue so that we can get some action. The idea seems cool, it just hasn't been able to happen yet.

It's the Attunement stat you need to level to 10 to get a slot, not Intelligence. Attunement governs the number of spells of all types you can equip, Intelligence governs the amount of damage you can do with sorcery.

Requirements for spells:

- Have enough attunement slots to equip (some spells take more than one)
- Have the required int/faith to equip (at bottom of attunement window)

You also need the catalyst to cast, but you can attune it w/o.

No backstabbing, but it seems exceedingly easy to be stunlocked by any weapon, regardless of your poise. At least, 70 poise didn't seem to do jack for me against various swords. One handing greatswords and just mashing R1 at mid range seems really good right now, been wrecked by that repeatedly when I've invaded.

Come across a lot of stalemates too, with people hiding on ledges that provide enough cover for both people from ranged attacks and refusing to come down. Of course, climbing the ladder to get to them is certain death too. Had to black crystal and waste my last cracked red eye orb on someone like that, bummed me out.

Take all that with a grain of salt though, I haven't been able to successfuly win an invasion yet and ran out of orbs, so maybe I just really suck with a mace.

OK, Iron Keep:

This is what I'm talking about. Really enjoyed this area. It's well designed, not ugly and the enemies are fun too. Ninjas and Ninja Turtles all day. I thought I found some super secret exit but that appears to be where I'm supposed to go (Iron Dragon guy).

I thought I could put on my fire ring and pick up some treasure. Nope. Is there something better later or what?

Apparently you need to be human in order to get summoned, but even then invasions happen more rarely than in DkS1 so Blue Sentinels is mostly useless (in my experience) with the condition of people needing to be in Way of Blue.

Question about covenant prizes. If you leave a covenant for another, do you lose all progress in the 1st covenant? I can't remember how it was in DS1

The initial wave of bosses are a bit too similar for my tastes. The first four or so bosses in DS1 and DeS had a lot more variety to them.

Yea, even though they have different attack patterns, the tactics are the same for the bulk of them. I suppose it's decent training for circle strafing and quashing fears against rubbing in close to avoid big swipes and easily dodged lunges, where the real threat is staying in mid-long range. At the very least the bosses get a lot more varied as you progress.

Is this a problem?

With Demon's and Dark Souls - From has created a great 'framework' to build their game worlds in. Sort of how like Zelda provides a framework that has propelled many games with various tweaks and adjustments over the years.

Demon's Souls shares ideas with Kings Field and some of their earlier games.
Dark Souls builds on that - but expanded things out with an open/connected world, a few mechanic tweaks, expanded online.
Dark Souls II is like a hybrid of the two - refines that was there, and then builds out on it.

I think there is a nice mix of old-ideas, tweaked & expanded ideas, and new ideas.

Hell, even some of the asset reuse I am completely ok with - it's like a warm nostalgic hug from an aunt that you're scared of ;). The sound of some of the elevators being the same as the one going down to the Armored Spider in Demon's Souls, the growl of the dogs, the death sound of some enemies sounding like the silver knights in Anor Londo.

I like how they are keeping fairly true to their online vision while at the same time expanding it with the covenant system.

I like how they snuck in a 'hard mode', but having it play in with the game mechanics without being a straight up difficulty selector at the start of the game.

I also like how there are levels that are similar/call back to levels earlier in the series.

Boletarian Palace = Undead Burg/Parish/Lower Burg = similar to a bit of the first starting area
Valley of Defilement = Blight Town =
Bit of The Gutter/The Black Gulch
Getting a bit of Tower of Latria vibe from
Shine of Amana
, and both
Iron Keep and Drangelic Castle
have a bit of an Anor Londo vibe - while still being very unique and different at the same time.

Boss Fights that are a bit of a nod to previous things in the series but (mostly) avoid being a direct rip off,
The Rotten
being a bit like the 2-1 Boss,
The rat boss
feeling a bit like a derpy-Sif fight, while still bringing things that feel new to the table with other encounters.

So while there is a lot of 'idea reuse' many of those ideas fall into the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' category - and many of the other ideas have been expanded/tweaked/adjusted to still feel fresh.

If From continues the series (and I hope they do) - I'm sure there will be 'another level like the valley of defilement, another level like anor londo, another level like X', but then also toss in a bunch of new stuff also, and I think I'm OK with that.
I agree with you, Hopefully From will keep fixing the issues and improving on the good things about dark souls. Graphic would be a nice as well :) but I can live with thier amazing artwork.

rolling in water increases your fire defense massively for a brief time. you can stack that with flash sweat and other fire defenses. There are youtube videos of people getting the items if you want to see it.

So I read that
Royal Rat Authority
is an optional boss. Good riddance. I'm not sure where I can go next, however -- I used my Branch on the
statue before the Shaded Woods, of course, since I'm now at the Doors of Pharros
. Where can I go next to progress the main story?

upgrade your attunement until you get an attunement slot
it will go from 0 to 1 in the stats screen when you're leveling up

I don't think there are any penalties for abandoning covenants like in DS1. I've been switching back and forth regularly to suit my preference at the moment and it seems like progress remains logged, but I haven't been invaded enough to actually notice properly for some of them though.

It's possible that if invasions start picking up heavily, as well as ganking that we might see some action with the Blue Sentinels, but unfortunately it's a big block for that covenant to work. Maybe they'll tweak it later. Either way, if you are a Blue Sentinel you can still use the Cracked Blue Eye Orbs, which you can keep getting by dueling in the cathedral. I've yet to use it, I should probably try and see if people have 'sinned' enough for it to work. In the end, the covenant may be worth it just for that invasion itself.

Looks like this was one idea that sounded good on paper but has failed to materialize. Too few cracked red eyes in game early on and by late game no one will be in WoB. I have yet to be invaded although I have only played 7 hours, but I had several in that time playing DeS and DS1.

Has anyone infused their +10 Ultra Greatsword? I'm not sure which to do, any experiences?

Ok that is awesome. I'm loving the "liquids" in this game.
There are the oil pots in No-Man's Wharf combined with fire arrows, the poison jars in Harvest Valley (and the enemies can actually become poisoned and do poison damage when green).
Really neat and new mechanic that people aren't talking about enough.

What's pretty awesome is, that if you walk trough a poison pool, you're armor becomes green, and you can see it fading away slowly.

Invasions will pick up later on-- I didn't either in the early game, but I started getting them after like 20 or so hours. I got them regularly in Hunstman's Copse, and some other areas. Of course there are the covenant PvP areas but those work seperately from the Blue covenants. I think partly the reason for the lack of invasions is because the game is still very new and people are trying to get through it for the first time. Once the community is more established I think there will be more invaders. However, if there isn't anyone that sells Cracked Red Eye Orbs then that might put a damper on invasions in the long run.

I'm debating if i should use all my bosses souls or not, the weapons/armors i can trade them for (at least so far) are not that good at all

Have you gone up the stairs in the entrance to the Doors of Pharros yet? If not, that should be your next destination. That'll take you to the final area along the Shaded Woods branch.

Is it worth putting more points in END if I'm a strength build? I mean, I could use more but it seems like its only raising it by one point now.

At 20 btw.

Not much has changed here from DS1 on how to fight bosses if you pick the path of a Knight. Get up super close and start spinning around them, wait for them to whiff, then hit them once or twice. Shield up, and return to rotating around them.

Even the skeleton lords/kings I fought last night didn't really deviate from this too much.

Love the game thus far either way, but the boss "OH SHIT" is gone for me. I just do the same thing everytime and come out on top. Not a lot of thinking involved which sucks.

Hopefully the later bosses step it up in this regard. :/

That makes sense about the Sentinels, I guess I can give that up. It's a shame about invasions though. I actually like the occasional invasion mixing things up, even if I usually lose (at least in DkS1).

People seriously need to learn how to spoiler in this thread, it's annoying as
hell
. If you're going to spoiler something, give a frame of reference and then the spoiler, don't put all the information in the fucking spoiler.

Question about [name of area]:
this is a good spoiler

Question about
name of final boss and the way to beat him

Where do you use the Boss souls for weapons / magic? I've cleared 3 Primals. Have access to two of the Blacksmiths, etc. Still have no clue.

NPC spoiler, Lost Bastille and Shaded Ruins:
There are two NPCs that do this and they both require fragrant branches of yore. One is in Lost Bastille (upper bonfire before bridge to the Saltfort) and the other is in the Shaded Ruins (wake up a beast who drops a key, use the key on the locked door where you drop down among the basilisks, she'll leave there and go to her workshop in Brightstone, name's 'Ornifex'). The one in the Bastille does regular boss souls, Ornifex does final boss souls.

Have you gone up the stairs in the entrance to the Doors of Pharros yet? If not, that should be your next destination. That'll take you to the final area along the Shaded Woods branch.

Oh, I totally skipped that part. I'll check it out -- thank you!

Yeah having a high stability shield and lots of vitality does trivialize a lot of fights, but don't worry there are still magic bosses and bosses that'll shit-slam you no matter how big your shield is.

So, there aren't many if any Boss Soul weapons for a caster, huh? The closest I can seem to find is the Roaring Halberd with its 'lower' requirements of 16/12/12/12 and Dark Damage.

Fucked up
Ruin Sentinels
in Bastille earlier today. The fight itself wasn't that hard when I got the right tactic down
(killing the first sentinel on the ledge where you start at before dropping down)
but I did die quite a few times mostly because of carelessness.

As I progressed, it felt like more and more of the bosses were much easier if I take the shield off to prevent myself from blocking. It doesn't really change the pattern mentioned that much though. You still spin around them until they telegraph the start of a move, then roll, hit once or twice, etc.

A few deviate from it though. Some with
more than one opponent require some care, like Sentinels and Gargoyles.
Several just have attacks that take a minute to get the timing of in general. The hardest boss I've fought in a Souls game was the
fight with Poison Medusa (since I was too dumb to figure out the easy way). It was an interesting change of pace, since you're basically on a timer both offensively and defensively.

Q. When I equip the "Name-Engraved Ring", I cannot take it off after I am matched up with someone. Why?
A. When you use the Name-Engraved Ring to filter your matchmaking you cannot take off the ring until after the multi-player session ends.

This isn't true currently. I am perfectly able to use ring, summon friend, and then switch to another ring as soon as they are in my world.
