Dark Souls II |OT2| Prepare to Vengarl

So what are the reasons that the White Soapstone is randomly unusable? I'm most recently seeing it like this at the Door of Pharros bonfire right before
Royal Rat Authority
. Does it have something to do with the area being a PVP summon area or something like that?

Some of the ideas here are good, but in practice these areas become the most frustrating and idiotic places to go because of the invaders. Maybe if the load times weren't so long, the idea of invaders would be fine. Most of the time, however, I know exactly when the invaders are coming because I either can't put down my soapstone or fog covers the door. If they want PVP, then make an arena. Most of the time I'm just trying to help other people kill the area boss and it just becomes frustrating to sit through the load times on death.

Topside clear now head down to the gutter for final great soul.

Currently on SL109 and 30:43 game time

Really taking this slow and steady compared to DS1

What the fuck is up with the weapon balancing in this game.

It's almost unreal how shitty some of the weapons with higher requirements are.

I just got my first great soul yesterday.
It was the one you're going for now.
Maybe that explains why the boss was pretty tough, haha. I'm playing this game completely blind so I have no idea what the best order is for anything. It's fun!

Not too hard. You'll need 2.5 playthroughs (to unlock Chancellor Wellager's upgraded wares) and a few respecs depending on your build (must meet INT/FTH requirement for some spell vendors to sell you stuff). I'm working on NG+ right now. The only trophies I need is collect all sorceries/miracles/etc and inherit
Lucatiel's
equipment, which I need one more boss for. I'll get all four spell collection trophies on NG++.

Are there other ways to get the spells that are rewarded for covenants? Isn't one of them something crazy like win 500 PvP duels for a single spell? Not to mention the rest of the covenants. That just doesn't sound fun.

Not sure where I'm supposed to go next. Any ideas? I've beaten the following bosses (going by the boss souls in my inventory). Spoilers for mid-late game.

Last Giant
Pursuer
Dragonrider
Old Dragonslayer
Flexile Sentry
Ruin Sentinel
Belfry Gargoyle
Lost Sinner
Executioner's Chariot
Skeleton Lord
Covetous Demon
Royal Rat Vanguard

I have a question for those who have been through
Crystal Cove Tseldora
. In the second section, with the Basilisks, Spider Humanoids, and the
NPC invader
, there is a house with two spiders inside of it. Inside that house is a chest on a shelf to the left of the door. Also in that house is a lever, hidden behind some boxes. I pulled the lever, but I have literally NO IDEA what it did. Does anyone know?

Keep following the path after the
Royal Rat Vanguard
, past the
Rat King
. You'll eventually end up in
The Gutter
.

Earthen Temple / Iron Keep?

Doors of Pharros:
Is fucking confusing. No way I'm wasting my few lockstones on the dozen locks in this area. Either I need a reliable farm for locks, or I'm going to cheat and figure out which I need to activate.

At least the area looks cool.

Can anyone explain the Guard Break - Riposte? I can guard break no problem but no matter how many time I push the light attach afterwards I've yet to get the Riposte with my weapon.

It
lowers the platform with the chest on it, so you can open it
. Hopefully I have the correct house, there are a lot of them to look into.

Getting ready to head into NG+ and have a couple of questions about covenants. I know the ranks carry over, but does the progress toward ranks carry over as well? And can I still be summoned as a Bell Keeper before I reach that point in the story again?

Fire Longsword. Should I keep upgrading it since I'm a pyro, Dex, Int build (I heard fire scales with Int) and have it be my main? Is it viable to get me to the end if I make it +10?

With the way the last few areas of the game have been going
Earthen Temple, Iron Keep, Drangelic Castle, Shine of Amana, Undead Crypt, etc
--- think things may be pushing towards "liking it more than Dark Souls I".

The start of the game left me with a bit of a so-so impression, but as the world opens up - you get into some really, really, really cool areas. The start of the game sort of lacked the 'Souls' game feeling - of which come back in full force later on in the game.

While there are a few areas of the game that are kind of ugly and look like PS2-rejects, there are other parts of the game that are gorgeous.

Never been one to get into the NG+ aspect of the series - I'd be more inclined to roll alts / new builds instead - but hearing that 'lots has changed' in NG+, I'm really curious/excited to tackle that once I finish off the game. Never mind the various other builds I want to try.

I could get really nitpicky about the game and rip apart the elements I don't like / changes I don't agree with - but that's more being a 'most critical of the things you love' thing, not 'the game sucks!' thing, and so far the pro's/things I like about the game - far outweigh the nitpicky cons and things I don't like.

Did anyone else rage balls in the room just before (late game spoiler)
Velstadt
? I died twice due to stupidity (the fight is actually really easy by DkS standards), but I kept trying to cheese my way through the room and kept dying. It's really frustrating...

Is there any certain number I should stop at when regarding stats? Like I have my INT at 40 (base, not including gear). As a battlemage/sorcerer type class, should I stop putting points in there since the gains are not as high anymore?

After you kill the boss in that area (requires using a lockstone to open the door, I'll cover the answer up in tags at the end of this post), you can join the Rat King's covenant. You can farm lockstones via PvP invasions through this covenant.

When you're on the second floor of the cavern, make your way back into the first room on the second floor. Along the left wall is a spot for you to place a Lockstone. Place it there and the door opens. At least I think that's the one. It usually has a message in front of it from a player. This leads to a bonfire and boss fog.

It lowers the shelf with the chest on it. It's unreachable before you pull the lever.

Is it worth getting to 50 STR for the Demon Great Hammer? I'm at 44 right now, and wondering if I should really put those remaining 6 into STR or if I should switch over to VIT to pump up my equip load, or DEX for when I start getting a good STR/DEX weapons?

Another question, will Galvan stop journeying permanently at some point? People kept saying he vanished forever, but that's not true. I've encountered him 3 times now.

There is a specific covenant that rewards you with lock stones.

You also get a lockstone if you defeat the covenant members you face in the area if you aren't a member. I've gotten several that way.

Yea, he's always at the bottom of the stairs for me right after the
Royal Rat Authority in Pharos
.

Gavlan Wheel, Gavlan Deal.

Enjoying NG+ more than the first playthrough. Wish that the new enemies were more prominent, though - it's mostly just the same old enemy placements with an addition here and there, and a black phantom gank squad popping up once every level or so.

Some things which I thought were overkill:

Those ninja things with the Flexile Sentry were impossible for me. Hits hard, hits fast, in a confined space smaller than the Capra arena from DkS1, with two of them + the Sentry itself. And to add insult to injury, they can inflict Toxic.

Ended up eating an effigy to summon Lucatiel, who took their attention long enough for me to wreck them.

---

Fuck those pyros with the Lost Sinner. Fuck them to hell.

---

Not a fan of how Heide's population doubled in size. Just dumping random enemies in doesn't up the challenge factor so much as just sheer frustration and annoyance, FROM.

---

More of an annoyance, but those two scythe-wielding BPs that respawn in Huntsman's Copse are lame as hell. I hate the frequency with which you are pitted against doughy, hard hitting mobs in tight corridors. Reminded me of the horrors of fighting through the Pilgrims of the Dark areas, with its random holes on the ground.

So as I'm going through the game with my second character I tried messing around with one of the NPC phantoms, and he proved to be remarkably resistant to being messed with. Specifically,
Jester Thomas
. If you tag his sign and then start exploring the level instead of fighting the boss he's perfectly willing to follow you pretty much everywhere. And he even stands around waiting for you while you're on ledges requiring dangerous jumps to reach or when you're
on the narrow ledge talking to Gilligan
he'll wait around for you where he can't block you.

Bit of a change from the Dark Souls AI phantoms, who would usually just turn around and walk away if you started to meander off instead of going straight to the boss.

Now I'm curious if you can use
the NPC phantom in Heide's Tower that's outside the Dragonrider boss to fight the Old Dragonslayer.
I didn't think to start having fun with the AI until after I'd already cleared the place out.

I'm not the only one who thinks those prisoners with that AOE jump attack are massive dicks right. Sure they go down in one hit pretty much but in packs and in darkness like in The Gutter they massive dicks

Fuck them
