PAL Charts - Week 12, 2014

Gaming is one of those mediums that is still highly dependent on strong word of mouth because of the high cost of entry and the high cost of the games themselves compared to other media forms. TF didn't have it. Neither does Infamous, but that is just another game for Sony so it doesn't matter.

Uncharted had it, the original Halo did, Gears had it in spades. People would come over to our place at uni to play Gears because we had a 360. The same is not happening with TF at the moment.

I think premium MP games will have it harder to find a foothold this gen because (finally) good F2P games make their way to console. The most popular MP games this/last gen had extensive progression systems and F2P games shine in that regard because they rely on those grind or metagame mechanics to monetize.

It is also very easy for F2P games to gain mindshare. The last two surprise MP successes that were completely based on word of mouth were F2P (Loadout, Planetside 2) and once these hit consoles I expect a similar phenomenon. We can already see successes of less ambitious F2P games like Warframe.

Titanfall was misjudged. It is not a full price game in the mind of consumers (see pricedrops). It is also advertised wrongly as a AAA experience. The expectation for the AAA experience was cemented last gen as a suite of Asset Rollercoaster Campaign+Progression Based Multiplayer. TF misses one component and hasn't got enough fluff content (Weapons, modes etc) to make a compelling value proposition. I think EA could have made bank with F2P Titanfall selling Titan parts/decals, burncard packs, costumes. Same (or to an even greater extend) with Garden Warfare. EA in general needs to be smarter about monetization. Their bigger F2P games still mostly follow the mobile monetization model when they should take cues from PC games. "Hardcore" whales are different than "casual" whales.

It's hard to tell if the current gen versions are very front loaded compared to the last gen versions. Thief is stil selling better on the PS4 than it is on last gen consoles while Garden Warfare on the 360 is now above the Xbox One version.

PvZ is more of a casual game, though. The Minecraft kids on 360 are probably fueling those sales. Looks like the core gamer has moved on. And Phantom Pain is still a year off. A Wii U version seems more viable at this point.

Titanfall second week drop is actually better than I expected.

73% drop is not bad at all for a release that had a big anticipation, a really strong opening (+100k on a single platform) and on top it was released on a system with a very reduced installbase.

73% drop for a game only on the market for 3 days....

What does MS have releasing from now to August?

WD will likely see its fair share on the PS4

Is SO coming out around then?

Much like the PS4 there is nothing coming before then.

I think Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon 2 and Halo 2 HD will be the X1's triple whammy in Q3/Q4.

They have Kinect sport in April, SO should be Oct release.
SO is a 2014 title. That's all we know.

They have Kinect Sports Rivals coming soon. Though I think it will bomb just like Wii Fit U.
Oh yeah that... Forgot about it

MS needs a Dance Central game

Are people tired of Dancing games?
Much like the PS4 there is nothing coming before then.

I think Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon 2 and Halo 2 HD will be the X1's triple whammy in Q3/Q4.
But those could be away of into the fall

In the US sony has MLB... They have those in house indies too... Other titles as well
and when it comes to multiplat releases they will likely get most of the pie

I think it's probably still too early for them to pull the trigger on something like that. A full MGS is going to have a very casual following also. I don't think people are as unaware of what GZ was. Meaning that it was something built for mainly the most hardcore of MGS fans, which is why it's no surprise that they'd lean more toward a current gen version.

I still think that we're probably a year or so off from full adoption of the current gen platforms. There's very little chance that FIFA, CoD or this years Battlefield will make up the majority of their sales on current gen platforms.

Those won't do much to ignite sales. On the other hand, if Sony doesn't launch Uncharted 4 or announce something else soon they won't have much either. 2015 will be the make or break for both platforms.

Isn't it a bit premature with all the Titanfall momentum talk?
This is just 2nd week, who say it can't make a Youkai watch come back?

Indeed, Sony need to have The Order 1886 in September, DriveClub October and then Uncharted in November.

How much did ShadowFall sell in its first week? For one, to gauge inFamous sales. But also, it just occurred to me that massive PS4 launch (250k) + lots of Killzone bundles and lack of other software + November launch... could its first week have been bigger than Titanfall's?

That would be very interesting!

Between 82 and 133k THat's the only estimate we have, so it doesn't really help.

I think the response just in Japan to FFX/X-2 HD was enough for them to sit up and see that people will buy their old (good) games again in HD.

True. I personally am not a huge fan of HD remakes of games I still own the originals of, unless there's a big reason for it. The big reason for FFXII for me? Give me that zodiac job system in an officially translated form for Vita and I'll be there day 1.

I think it's a shame - MGS4 came out at a similar point in the PS3's life, but there was no hint of a PS2 version, despite that console's immense user base.

To me, cross-gen continuing into 2015 for this sort of game and influencing development instead of getting a cut back or farmed out 'subtitle' version suggests that either a lot of developers don't know how to make use of the additional power, or far from being in a healthy state, many in this industry are relying on the PS3 / 360 to drive sales, which would be very worrying on recent evidence.

Loving the new InFAMOUS. Great to see it's doing well. I think what makes it even more impressive is how little suckerpunch showed of the game before launch.

A little offtopic but playing inFAMOUS now, I'm very glad that they didn't show a whole lot. Feels so rare to be seeing most of the games "tricks" for the first time while playing.

According to famousmortimer Uncharted won't be a 2014 release and Sony will have something "HD" this fall, most likely TLOU HD.

Expected, but terrible if true. PS4 needs AAA to carry the sales after the launch impulse gets exhausted. Sony needs to launch Uncharted, GT and at least some new IPs. GG's RPG project could be interesting, but I think Santa Monica should do something new as well.

Still don't get why they are releasing last gen versions of Phantom Pain. It's going to sell next to nothing on last gen when it releases 2015. It just adds restrictions what they can do with this gen versions. Sucks.

Sony getting the best version of any multi-platforms will help a lot though. Compared to the AAA exclusives Sony had in its first year of the PS3, the fact that we have InFamous already has already made it better. Forgot just how barren it was until I looked it up.

I just think this gen and last gen are different in the sense that developers actually built cross gen engines. That seems to be the first time something like that has happened on a large scale. So, they've been planning for this for years. I think that's what part of this comes from. These games have been in development and the impact on the current gen versions are going to be there no matter what. So, they probably figure that it's best to just follow through.

What's interesting is that we're seeing UBI split up their AC games this year. The PS4/Xbox One/PC will get its own game while the PS3, 360 and possibly Wii U will get another. CoD is also rumored to be focusing on the current gen versions even though there will also be versions for last gen platforms. And recently it was rumored that the last gen versions of Dying Light have been canned. So, it seems that some studios are already starting to cut off or phase out the last gen.

Watch Dogs, Destiny, MLB and Batman:AK would fit the AAA bill.
