Does anybody know of a good all around shield? I have been using the Drangleic shield for pretty much the whole game. Just wondering if anybody knows of a better one? Also is the drangleic shield worth upgrading?

If you're after another good small shield,
McDuff sells a Royal Kite Shield, which you can upgrade with regular titianite instead of the Twinkling the Drnagleic needs. At +6 it's gotten me through most of the game.

Its a very quick weapon for a great sword. with wide sweeping R1 attacks. Great for mobs.
the R2 is a awesome thrust attack. Double handing thrust attack usually gives you time to get in a second R2 attack.

I infused with a bolt stone. dex goes down to a D Scaling but lightning jumps up to a c or b.
Its my favourite weapon. much prefer it then the one in Dark souls 1

Similar, i used a Boltstone on the Claymore and it is killer.

Got a Flaming Bastard Sword and then just a standard +10 Mastadon Sword for pretty good greatsword coverage across the board.

I don't think summoning 2 guys makes them "casuls". It's just more fun with more people. Aren't bosses supposed to get harder the more guys you summon? If we're gonna is use that metric, then the best players should play solo with SL1 to prove they're truly hardcore.

I do. Just read what the guy somehwere above that post has said.
Never had to worry about smelter. Summoned two people and nuked him from afar with lightning. I actually never knew he is "hard" lol, didn't get hit once.

the bosses aren't designed for 3 player characters. you can block or run away and let the phantoms do the work. that's basically EASY mode for dark souls and ruins your experience.

I'm using the Defender's Shield, but that's only available (really) late game though.
60 stabilty unupgraded, and only 5 pounds.

I'm only at about 20% of the game. Is it better to upgrade armour and or shield or should I not bother with it? Didn't have a problem until now.

Yeah, it's probably easier, but I don't think there's any need to start accusing people of being casual (like it's an insult). Let people play however they enjoy it.

Besides, the real easy mode is when you kill everything to get to a boss 10 times and all the stuff you've been killing just goes away. :(

And you use 2 summons to kill everything 10 times lol.

For some reason this game isn't grabbing me as much as Dark Souls or Demon's Souls did.

I find that I absolutely *hate* the "no respawns after X kills" mechanic.

I think that's down to the individual. Some people simply prefer playing co-op and have a better experience because of it.

Am I the only the one to have initially disliked this game but learned to love it with time? I eventually found my groove and after boosting ADP considerably, the movement became less clunky and laggy. It's unfortunate that we have to boost a stat for that, but it is what is. The environments don't feel as connected, but it's okay. I don't mind as much I thought I would. They made some interesting changes to this game that I surprisingly enjoyed. All in all, I still have a lot to do and already spent about 30 hours.

Based on how I'm seeing things now, though, upgrading material is a lot more scarce.

You sure it isn't in your head? ADP didn't seem to do much for me.

Titanite stuff seems scarce at first, but you'll find plenty of it. Especially the lowest two sizes. Feel free to use as many shards and large shards as you can.

It gets pretty plentiful late-game. I have multiple sets of upgraded equipment and weapons, with tons more materials. I really wish there were "loadouts" you could set and switch between easily, I've been doing a lot more switching in this game compared to the previous.

Maybe it ruins yours, but other people really enjoy co-op. Let's not get into debates about what makes a 'pure' Dark Souls experience. It was dumb with the first game and it's dumb now.

casul is a running joke around here. notice the spelling.

I believe you need to kill 4 of The Last Giant, The Lost Sinner, The Rotten, The Iron King and Freja. So you can skip one.

I had beat everyone but
Freja
and it wouldn't let me in. I believe there must be another requirement, because I've heard people here say that they only had two
great souls
.

I read something about having 1 million soul memory, don't know if that's true.

It ruins nothing. Like I said, it's fun to play coop with people. The game allows you to summon 2 guys so people can enjoy it that way if they want. If people want a challenge, they can stick with playing solo or use the Bonfire Ascetic. If people want to enjoy the battles with others, that's a choice they can make. Enjoyment can be had by both sides.

You actually have to kill all four of those, minus the Last Giant. Or I think if you get 1 million soul memory you can just go through?

You were always able to just run from the last bonfire and ignore every enemy to get to almost every boss if you wanted. Enemies despawning doesn't really change a lot.

Am I the only the one to have initially disliked this game but learned to love it with time?

I learned to love the way my character handles as I progressed.

Beyond the handling of the character, the game gave me a bad first impression with those large creatures in the tutorial area. I think they look fucking stupid, and that is a rarity in this series. Fortunately, the enemy design gets mostly better from there.

You sure it isn't in your head? ADP didn't seem to do much for me.

ADP did a lot for me. I drink estus quicker, my shield goes up quicker, and in general my movement feels very crisp. When I first started playing, it was so disappointing to have everything being so clunky. I was going to quit the game. Nonetheless, I persevered and managed to get my character to where I'm happy.

Great to know! I was worried. What about chunks and slabs? I'm holding off on upgrading the "Sword of Berserk," as I call it, to +10 lol.

Yeah, thanks for reminding me. I need to go back there and kick their ass.

What do you guys think about pumping Vitality? I've been bringing that bad up for a while. I'm at 80. Any recommended stopping points?

True, but that requires a little bit of being careful, and occasionally dodging. The new system removes any effort.

It's elitist shit like this that cause people give crap to people like dark souls on this forum.

Let people play how they want to, I have zero interest in pvp souls series that make me casual also.

Fuck these two last optional bosses. Won't go into NG+ before beating them though, but it kind of feels like hitting my head against a wall.

As my first character was STR as fuck I think I'm gonna make a new character to 'relax' and spend more time with this amazing game without getting mad over video games. Gonna go with DEX, maybe some dual wielding stuff and perhaps throw some intelligence or faith in there as well.

Can anyone recommend a great dex weapon that's available from quite early on and has decent durability? I was thinking of going with Ricard's Rapier but the durability on that is all kinds of garbage.

15 times. do you know how long 15 times is? 15 boss tries alone. the despawn doesn't really change anything.
It's not a lot if you're bad at this game. Goes by quick.

Knowing the despawn will kick in also makes me want to just go ahead and farm the enemies since if I don't make it back to the boss, souls will be gone forever. It doesn't matter in practicality because souls are everywhere, but it definitely encourages farming for me.

Edit: I don't want to escalate this into something bigger than it is though. I do concede that it isn't that dramatic of a difference, and that 15 tries should be plenty to avoid it.

All DEX weapons have bad durability. It's best to carry 2 just in case. I've rarely had even one weapon go into critical condition though.

I really enjoyed the
gargoyles
fight, was really exciting with so much going on and I did it my first try!

Then a silver gnome killed me.

I completed my first run yesterday, minus two optional late game bosses
Vendrick
and
Ancient Dragon
.

In total, it took a little over 50 hours, and I started my playthrough last Saturday. I haven't obsessively played through a game like this probably since Dark Souls 1.

Nothing was all that tough for me. I'm thinking that the S
melter Demon
might have been the single hardest boss, and the casters in
Shrine of Amana
were the toughest area. Up to that point, I played the entire game as melee - I eventually had to just leave the area and come back with a load of poison arrows and a bow to make it through.

EDIT: Overall, I think I enjoyed my time with this game more than DaS1, but probably because I got in on the ground floor and got to experience the discovery along with most everyone else.

At max agility you improve your drink speed by 0.5 second so i dont think you actually see your character drink faster than before.

Shrine of Amana:
There are some shields you can get in that area that have 90% Magic resist... Very helpful against those ladies...

All I can tell you is that it's faster, and I actually notice it a lot. Helps a ton. It was very frustrating to drink estus in the beginning of the game.

So what areas are known for having bad frame rate? I have 10/12 locations filled out on the travel menu and so far the game as been fantastic in this regard. Can't even recall a noticeable dip.

Wait so where's V

More spoilery, if you really want to know:
He's at the end of the area after Amana, the Undead Crypt.

I feel like I could tell a difference in that too. Not a lot, but a difference. 0.5 seconds is pretty huge, though I doubt either of us had close to max agility. The other part you mentioned, about crisper movement in general, is what I didn't see. I expected to have a much easier time dodge rolling, but I'm not even sure if it helped.

Made it up to the boss in the iron keep. Can someone give me an estimated % completed so far?
Hugely depends. You could be close to 35%, or as high up as around 75%. This game isn't too linear.

This is stupid. Soul memory is fucking stupid. I've ruined my game now. I can no longer be summoned at Belfry lunar, so i can no longer get chunks or advance in either bell keepers or rat bros. I've waited hours, and no bite. Is there anyway to get titan chunks now or am i fucked?

What is your soul memory at? I could still get lots of summons at like 3mil in NG.

I'm pretty sure you can farm chunks and slabs from the statue guys in Drangleic castle. I don't think they all despawn, either, since they're required to open certain doors/contraptions to make progress. Maybe someone can back me up on that.

I think online activities are separated by NG and NG+, so it's possible if you're still NG your soul memory could be too high, but in NG+ there's plenty of action even at level 195 and soul memory around 5 million.

Rolling was atrocious at the start but has become better. I'm to the point of being satisfied with it. Though, I'm still a little confused about the equipment weight to roll ratio. Seems like I'm at ~50% and my roll is still quick. Based on what people have said here, percentage dictates roll distance.
