Dark Souls II |OT2| Prepare to Vengarl

I just reached the S
hrine
of
Winter
and D
rangleic Castle
this morning before work. I love the environmental details. The amount of lore baked into the architecture reminds me of the first time I visited Anor Londo in DkS.

Got truly Dark Souled for the first time in the Undead Purgatory. I haven't even tried the fog gate yet, just getting jacked by the whip dudes and that red phantom. Lost over 35k souls which is 3 levels for me so it's something. My wife was laughing.

What the fuck, FROM.

After giving me a false sense of security with the
Prowling Magus
boss fight, you set me up to fight a fucking
GIANT LASER SPIDER WITH ONE SHOT FUCK YOU ATTACKS
not to mention
ALL HER LITTLE FRIENDS THAT CAN TWO SHOT ME
?
Compared to all the other bosses so far, this one feels like it was balanced for NG+ instead of NG.

I hear that.
Scorn is heaped upon me after every stupid death in this game.

Hey guys, I'm thinking about grabbing this game after work today. I played and beat Demons Souls and played a little bit of Dark Souls but got lost and never finished it. I've been watching a lets play of this on YouTube and I've decided to buy it later. The reason I stopped playing Dark Souls is because I was essentially lost. I didn't know if I was upgrading right or even if I was going the right way. Do you guys think I should just go in blind because I was planning on buying the Strategy guide as well. Any tips?

Personally I would recommend playing this game blind, or blind-ish. Many people here are sharing information and asking for help when they get stuck, and that's fine. In many ways these games were meant to be tackled as a community. But on the other hand, just following a guide, or reading everything in this thread regardless of whether you need it is bound to spoil your experience. It's just much better when you are exploring yourself and figuring out what works, rather than just painting by numbers, going where a guide tells you to, using the weapons it recommends, and following all the same strategies.

That being said, you are just as likely to get lost in this game as you did in Dark Souls. There are still plenty of intentionally obtuse mechanics, and there are multiple paths forward, so it's not always obvious which is the "correct" path. You can never really screw yourself in either game (unless you kill important NPCs, so don't do that), but you can waste a lot of time and make things hard on yourself by trying to tackle an area before you are ready, using weapons that don't compliment your build, or by missing useful items. But that's just part of the game to learn by experience what works and doesn't, and adjust your strategy accordingly. And in this game you can at least respec (though you need a particular consumable item that is hard to come by early on) if you mess up your build.

Personally, I would say try Dark Souls 1 again, since you (presumably) already own it. If it doesn't grab you this time, maybe the series just isn't for you. And if it does, you can always pick up DS2 later. I can promise you this thread will still be active in a couple of years.

I had way more trouble with her in NG+ to be honest.

Mostly cause I couldn't get people to help me and was stuck with the NPC summon. At least it draws a little of the spider lazor so I could spam lightning spears.

Also not in small part because the little spiders in NG+ hit HARD.

edit: Also, when the lazer starts, run TOWARDS the spider to avoid it, not to the side. You are probably locked on and running forward is faster than circle strafe.

Now at D
rangleic
C
astle
in NG+. Not looking forward to that large group of mob enemies in that room next to the bonfire.

Do we know the level cap for this game? Does it go above 700 like Dark Souls 1?

838 according to one of the Dark Souls 2 wikis.

Was anyone else taken by total surprise in NG+ at Drangleic Castle by
the two red phantoms that appear outside the door to Throne of Want once you can go finish the game?

The fucker with the bow completely ruined me. At one point I managed to summon a sunbro just in the middle of the intersection outside the bonfire.

Sunbro appeared and was finishing his little automatic praise the sun stitch, when I see him hit by two arrows and killed. That place is scary as fuck. They completely destroyed most of the summoned help I got.

There are 9 stats that can be taken to 99. Deprived starts at level 1 with 6 in each stat, so you need 93 in each stat to max it. So that's (93*9)+1, or 838 for the maximum level. All classes have the same total stat allocation this time, so it's the same level for all classes.

I didn't find Freya a cakewalk by any means but the laser is quite easy to roll through. It's very similar to the Moonlight Butterfly's laserbeam in DS1 if you played it.

As it goes from left to right, roll right to left through it.

Aren't both optional bosses? Unless you want their stuff for any reason?

Well
Lost Sinner
is a storyline boss, being one of the 4 great souls you need to collect. But since beating them leads to a dead end, there's no reason why you couldn't put off the fight until much later when you are stronger.

1) Can you do anything with Boss souls other than consuming them, or
trading them with Straid
?

2) Should I be able to reacht he stairs in the room with the
COvetous Demon
?

3) What do I have to do to invade? I've got the Cracked Red Eye orbs, in human form, online, but the option is greyed out

There is another vendor later that also trades for boss souls.
2) Should I be able to reacht he stairs in the room with the
COvetous Demon
?
I can't say with 100% certainty, but I'm almost positive there is no way up there. It's just a weird red herring.

You aren't by chance trying to invade in Majula or possibly another area where PVP is not available? You should be able to use Cracked Red Eye orbs to invade, even if you aren't part of a covenant.

1) You can also trade them with another person later on too. Though, that is basically it. However 5 Giant Souls can be used to help fight K
ing
V
endrick
by
lowering his defense from 32x to 1x
. If you decide to do this, you need to keep them on you during this fight.

2) I don't think so.

3) Are you sure you are still logged in to their server? Best test for that is see if you can even bring up the Messages popup.

Makes sense the smelter demon you can just walk past without needing to do. Sinner I'm doing post iron king I think.

I think I'll just buy it today. I just finished up Infamous Second Son and I need a game to play before my game withdrawals start setting in lol. I'm glad this thread is here because I will definitely need it once I start my journey. Thanks for the help by the way. Any tips you can give on a starting build. I wanna go melee with a little magic like I did in Demons and Dark Souls.

Doors of

covenant may just be one of my favorite things ever in a Souls game.
It's essentially a way to turn yourself into a miniboss for other players in that level. Unlocking all the traps and enemies and then sitting up top watching people as they run through it all is incredibly entertaining. Hard part is coaxing people to go through it as they always think you're go to jump in and stab them in the back. Sometimes I just message them to go through and I will fight 1v1 if they make it to the end. Obviously this is the covenant that is completely 100% unfair to the person being summoned in, as you can just pile on at any moment, but I think the intent is to sit back and watch them make it through all the traps.

A few people have managed to kill me, but one of them was invincible or something. Nothing I hit him with did any damage. I hit him with fire, I hit him with physical, I hit him with magic, and his HP did not drop at all. Is there some glitch in the game that does this or is their an invincibility spell that I don't know about? 6 swipes from an upgraded Black Knight Halberd should do something right?

Play as 'blind as your enjoyment allows' - if you are stuck/frustrated at the point of wanting to quit from not knowing what to do next, then get help. One tip: Exhaust all NPC dialog (they will start repeating themselves) when you encounter them.

NO NO NO!
just run round under her legs to to the right and smash her other head in. best oppurtunity to get some hits in.

Finally beat the game completely yesterday (including ancient dragon, vendrick, and darklurker)... God working full time sucks when you wanna keep playing.

Ended at SL 148 at abour 60 hours with a STR/FTH build using a bunch of lightning/great lightning spears and a Broadsword+10. Beat Vendrick and Darklurker second try, and it took me about 12-15 tries to beat ancient dragon but once I got him in a pattern it got easier.

Before doing NG+ I think I wanna play through with some other char builds such as a dual wielding (probably katanas) DEX/INT build (mainly so I can use that black armor set from straid) and also a pure STR build using an ultra GS. I'll probably also make a pure Sorcerer INT/FTH build later.

Its been a while since I have fully enjoyed a game as much as this.

I still haven't found a damn katana in the game. Are they early game or late game or what?

They drop from the enemies in I
ron
K
eep
, and can be purchased once you give the
Dull Ember
, found in that same area, to
Blacksmith McDuff in the Lost Bastille
.

You can buy your first katana from
McDuff in Lost Bastille
which i would say is mid game-ish.

EDIT: Forgot about having to have the
Dull Ember
as poster above me mentioned.

You guys who have finished up the first play through in around 60 hours either used a guide or missed a lot of optional content.
I am 80+ hours in and just started the giant memory's.

So I have to say that (Earthen Peak)
burning the windmill is a pretty poorly designed action. Nothing (so far) elsewhere in the game functions anything remotely like that. And you take the torch to the middle of the windmill instead of the flammable looking sheets. Having it be a community sourced thing with messages is cool, certainly, but the lack of any way to possibly figure it out on your own is kind of stupid.

(Unless of course there's an NPC somewhere or something that gives you some vague tip and I just never found em.)

L
ucatille's
storyline is complete for me. 3 victories and I need to talk to her one more time to get her gear. All that is left is 2 more B
enhart
wins and I can just bonfire ascteic him since he can be summoned for a REALLY easy boss.

Which boss for future reference?

Also, can someone please advise me on the
Mcduff
achievement? No matter how much I spend or infuse it is not unlocking for me.

I did a NG+ co-op with someone who just couldn't take the hint about that in Earthen Peak. I even lit my torch several times and pointer at the thing.. Guy didn't have a clue. Kinda funny in a sad way.

I absolutely agree. It's shitty.
I spent over an hour just running around that entire area trying to find some kind of switch or something to destroy to remove that poison pool. I painstakingly searched every nook and hitting every wall, trying to break everything. Ultimately I gave up and looked online and when I read it and went to that spot I said to myself, "This is the stupidest f#$%ing thing ever. You can't just light cast iron on fire with the fire from a hand held wooden torch."
I was just dumbfounded by the whole thing. It makes no sense in the context of the game, nor in the reality of the world. Not only that, it doesn't even look like a place you can walk up to at first glance.

Thanks brah will do. I wish this work day would hurry up 3:00 seems like an eternity away. Can't wait to play this game.

I used the guide for certain areas, but if anything the guide made me play slower since I had to stop playing to look at it.

I did the same, but it is not unfair as the players are sucked into your world lose nothing if you kill them but you will lose everything especially your human form if they killing you! So it is not unfair at all, just risk and reward for the host player!

Did they remove some enemies? I could have swore there were 2 more knights before The Dragonslayer at the tower of flame. It seems they have removed two of them before getting to the drawbridge. Unless I am just imagining that on my first play through they were there.

Finished my SL1 Deprived run through. Definitely harder than DS1 SL1 I would say although part of that was on me not understanding the new rules about two-handing. I played the first 20% thinking I only got a 1.5 strength bonus which limited me to using the broken straight sword. Also no free spell slots with only 6 attunement. I haven't tried using rings to be able to cast some pyromancies so I'm not sure if it's worth it. I did it all by bashing things with my mace.

After I found out I could use the mace and hand axe, things got dramatically easier. It was kind of interesting what bosses were difficult with this character compared to my previous characters (Strength focused Knight and Hexing Sorcerer). Hardest bosses for me were:

Lost Sinner. I ended up leaving her as my last great soul since I felt she was the hardest of the 4. Smelter Demon was a little rough who I never had problems with before. Velstadt was reeeeally rough. I only beat him on the run I did because I managed to stagger him right as he wanted to power up which locked him out of it. And then the watcher/defender combo was also really tough. Final boss was a joke even at SL1.

I haven't yet beaten the optional bosses though.
I've made a number of runs on Darklurker but once he splits I'm fucked. I tried the ancient dragon a few times as well but I do such pathetic damage that it takes a day and a half to kill him and by that time he'll tag me with his breath for an instakill. Haven't tried Vendrick since I was going to wait until I had all 5 giant souls.

Nope.

Took me 60 hours. the only thing i missed first playthrough was going back to the area where you kill
Freja
after you get the
Ashen mist heart

No guide.

Did you talk to him? Trophy is probably sitting there waiting to pop. :)

Talked to him many times =/ Wonder if it's glitched.

It's double in this one, right?
