It was fine but when more people started quoting the gif I noticed the quotes only showed black and the webm wouldn't play back.
 
i think we should totally we have a high res webm gaming side thread. who's with me?

Exactly, and even if the header doesn't lie, it could still be a short video with really high bitrate padded to a higher length with black frames (or even a single one, by setting that frame's timecode directly).
 
It's not a Sonic game you can get off the shelf. It's the levels from Sonic Unleashed X360, ported cross-game/cross-platform to the PC/Steam version of Sonic Generations, so that they finally get to be played at a blazing 1080p/60fps.

Filesize is a lot smaller than most gifs, and a few pages back I posted one that was a minute long. Total size was about 10mb, which is the size of a fairly large but common gif.

You're totally missing the point of our current discussion. We all know this is not comparable to GIF in any sane sense of scale/magnitude.

edit: The best way for me to explain it would be that now that something that is much better than GIF comes along, it is more likely to be used (/abused) very frequently, and we're brainstorming ways on how to not overtax every single host that this spreads to. 4chan for example imposes a hard 3MB limit with no audio. While tolerable that does limit what the format is capable of.

And believe me, this is very open to being abused, even by well-intentioned folks. Those 4 Sonic webms I posted, for example, are targeted at 15Mbps (on purpose, for me to test out) which is way more hefty than a video of those dimensions and complexity warrants. They could easily have been something akin to 3Mbps with no discernible loss in quality, even at 60FPS.

Bandwidth is going to be a really significant factor when this starts getting used a lot more than it is now. Especially on mobile. Especially on GIF thread quote pyramids. (Yeah I know, who browses GIF threads on mobile anyway, etc. etc.)

edit2: Speaking of quote pyramids, there is no way for the browser extensions to pull the same URLs from the same web cache rather than loading and processing each one individually, is there?
 
This is awesome. Jump in IQ while keeping file size low is ridiculous. Although I'm surprised it took this long for GAF to notice. This new format is couple of years old.

Quite true. There are also a few psychological factors involved. The process of creating GIFs involves some "pain". You know beforehand that it won't look too great at will balloon up quickly. With video files, you just cut out whatever you like and then encode it. Maybe you feel like not wasting bandwidth and encode it at a low bitrate. Looks bad? Easy. Just make it bigger. There isn't a (sane) inherent upper limit to quality and filesize that stops you from going overboard.

The FF extension just rewrites the website HTML from a link to a video tag, so the browser should in theory handle it like any other file, or rather embedded video.

In the video world, we call that "blocking artefacts" not "pixelated". ;)

It's high motion with lots of stuff flying everywhere. That makes it hard to compress. Throw more bitrate at it and it will look better... and be bigger.

Seriously, that video would be a pretty good stress test for video encoders.

The firefox greasemonkey script seems to do this. At least when autoplay is off. After a video has been downloaded once it seems to use the cache when playing it again in a quote.
 
The best thing to happen on GAF thanks to this being implemented on 4chan.

It could have been discovered here first but you gotta thank 4chan for popularizing it.

"pixelated" means the quality setting you use is too low for your content. Use higher quality settings.
Using ffmpeg, try crf 4 (or crf 6) instead of 10, and up the target bit rate (-b:v 3M, -b:v 5M, etc) until you are satisfied. You can also use the libvpx-vp9 (instead of libvpx) setting for better quality at the cost melting CPUs even more.

Edit: Unless the quality of your video source is too low, of course.

Still getting "Video format or MIME type not supported". I kinda thing it may have to do with the fact that I'm viewing these from work as the pages these webm's are hosted on are blocked.
