Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 6: Final Destination confirmed for not fun

Also, for pokemon, we have

Charizard Fire / Flying
Greninja Water / Dark
Lucario Fighting / Steel
Pikachu Electric
[Jigglypuff] Normal / Faerie

Which is 9 of the 18 types. Exactly half

You think we'll get any other types represented?

Mewtwo would bring psychic back!
Venusaur would knock out grass/poison

What other popular pokemon would cover the remaining types? I honestly have nothing for Ice.

So much new information. So many new moves. Argh.

Oh, and in case anyone wants a 9MB GIF highlight of 3DS stages, here.

I'm liking the layout of the 3DS stages more, to be honest. Some great platforming and level design there. For Wii U, Palutena's Temple looks waaaaay too big and some of the gimmicks like on Dr. Wily's Castle just don't seem all that fun.

But gaddam dat Wii U Final Destination.

Can probably lop off the last two since their pre-evo forms are Pokéball characters. And if Ivysaur is gone, I doubt Venasaur is playable. The other options... Aren't all that great. Normally I'd give Gardevoir the nod, but she is returning as a Pokéball character too.

I didn't know there was a Chespin/Quilladin pokeball summon nor a Snivy/Servine pokeball summon.

Chesnaught could have theoretically been a feasible character: as a fighting type, it has access to a bunch of high-action moves while being able to clam up it's defenses. A leech seed mechanic could have been cool too.

It seems some people are basically lying to themselves to prevent this game from being shit in their minds. Still think Ridley has a chance for some reason. (I personally like what we have so far, no need to go into full delusion mode)

My wife is a mostly casual gamer and thinks there are too many Pokemon. Don't know WHAT they were thinking there honestly. Seems like no one would have missed Zard, but then again dat higher up medlin'

I fear we won't be getting a retro...

Eh?

So about that E3 "leak" stating Pac-Man & Mii would be playable.

C9ZdyS8.png

1. Miis appear as a background character. Very probable that it would be the player's personal mii by default.

Granted, there's the Toon Link argument that a character can be both playable & background. I'd argue that Toon Link is a special case due to being playable in the past & not having him in the train stage would seem not right. But instead I'll point out...

2. The stage icon. If Miis were playable, would they really have a crown for their series icon? Seems strange to fixate solely on Find Mii out of every game they've been in. & if they were playable there certainly wouldn't be any reason this stage would have a different icon from them.

It's not really conclusive evidence but it has me skeptical.

Should be noticed that every franchise that don't have a playable character receives the default smash icon

Strangely, this and Pilotwings have an icon

Damn, the amount of trolls in that direct were amazing. I should know better, but still... That Palutena trophy really got me... I was so upset when that I saw the back of the trophy lol.

Really upset Saki is an assist again :(

Woah, Smashboards has a lovely layout.

People are lying to themselves by thinking that the game isn't shit based on what's been shown?

No I think the game is great, but some people think if it doesn't have Ridley that auto makes it garbage. They are now in a state that even though Ridley was pretty much deconfirmed that he STILL has a chance. This is the most delusional I have seen gamers, its tops a lot of my online experiences.

I think it's just because pilotwings is a notable series with an easy-to-make icon. Nothing more to it.

Regi triple threat? Would double up on steel but then who cares.

The only other pokemon that would work as a fighter is Abomasnow

To be fair, Pokemon is the second biggest franchise behind Mario. Makes sense that they would have the most reps (at this point, 4 but a max of 5 most likely with Jiggles)

I guess it kind of feels weird because there's also Pokemon items, but alternatively there's not only more assist trophies that are from the Mario universe, but stages and items too.

Ah, I appear to have misunderstood your post, my fault.

Someone pointed out earlier that stages get icons regardless of whether or not they have playable characters. Think Electroplankton.

OH! This makes more sense, you worried me dude. Yeah, some Smash fans are insanely delusional and emotional. It's pretty bad.

Big stages are fine as long as they are designed well. Zelda's Temple worked. New Pork City did not.

I just updated my Assist Trophies list so can anyone let me know if I miss anything?

Playable stages actually get the icons. Remember DS stage, Animal Crossing, Electoplankton, etc.

Also you left Nintendog out of your list as well.

That would be a very good alternative.

EDIT: I get the feeling Sakurai dislikes the idea of having players wait until a match is over after they've run out of stocks. Time matches is a way to avoid that.

EDIT: It would be absurdly easy for them to change all those Final Destination variants into variants Battlefield (or even stuff like Brawl's AC stage).

That's why I still think it's gonna be changed, either before or after the release of the game. Besides, we haven't seen the final destination variants of most stages, so maybe some are planned to have platforms.

The time thing is still bad though, but it also could be easily tweaked if enough noise is made by the community.

I think given the effort of the Smash team to make the game also enjoyable by the competitive crowd, through things like separating transformations, removing stuff like tether recoveries and even implementing For Glory (even though it's far from the best kind of system) shows that there's a chance they will tweak those online aspects.

Worst case scenario, there's still matches with friends.

NOOOOOOOOO DEEEE EYYYYYEEEEEEEEE

10/10

Who wants to be in charge of the twitter campaign to tell sakurai to add more features to FOR GLORY?

We need STOCK MODE and at LEAST BATTLEFIELD added in. Final destination is ok as long as sometimes platforms appear in preset patterns (battlefield style, animal crossing style, etc).

Time mode makes it so fast characters can land ONE hit and then just run away.
Final destination only makes it so a ton of characters aren't even viable.

What do we call it, how do we get them to notice? They're always so close to doing it right, but fall just too short.

Even if they can't get it in by launch, they can at least work on it and patch it in later :(

Also, where are those other pictures coming from!? press kit?

worth a shot....

Who thinks this game has too many Pokemon characters? Mario still has 5 characters more then anyone else, is anyone really expecting Sakurai to cut Jigglypuff at this point? She's probably one of the secret characters as she's always been.

Too many Pokemon? There are 4 Pokemon confirmed so far, its Nintendo's 2nd biggest franchise, and there were 6 Pokemon characters in Brawl.

Also i do think its suspect how Sakurai has been teasing Ridley as a stage hazard/boss for Pyrosphere for months now but refuses to show him. Sakurai hasn't teased anyone else and has immediately and directly shot down all other characters.

Correct! I really hope we can make enough noise to let them know that we want more than final destination!
Might have to set up competitive online play w/ friends, which, thank goodness, can be configured to WHATEVER, like we're playing on a couch together. So so so thankful.

Time > Stock unless you're doing 1 on 1, seriously no one likes doing a 4 player match for fun with stock unless you enjoy sitting and watching two people play grab ass for 5 minutes.

Why do people keep complaining about too many Pokemon? Only 4 are confirmed and there were 6 in Brawl...

Because some people feel that Pokemon is being over-represented. There were only 5 characters in the Mario Universe in the last game. Considering that Jigglypuff is likely to be back, Mewtwo has been rumoured for ages, and there could always be another surprise down the line, the total could easily rise to 7+.

Made this quick design/model comparison of the new revealed veterans!

YUCY4P.png
Charizard is rad all around. he looks a bit taller too.

Samus looks a lot better face wise, but in SSB4 she basically looks like she's nekkid with blue painted over top of her. and the thingie on her chest brings your eyes right to them because its glowing lol
im ok with that

Shiek looks better too. At this point, that's an entirely new model look, right? I haven't played many Zelda games but Im pretty sure she hasn't appeared in anything recently to pull her design from..right?

Yoshi looks great with them brighter colors. Brawl's "realism" approach was cool but I think the vibrant cartoony colors work much better.

So freaking happy we got a new Pokémon character. The whole "Brawl + Mewtwo" scenario everyone proposed would've been boring to me. Though I like Greninja, I'm really curious how it was chosen. There's no way they could've known that it was going to be the most popular X/Y Pokémon in early 2012. So were they just really lucky, or did Sakurai actually decide to add it in the last six months (I doubt it)?

Though it didn't reveal any of my favorite characters, I enjoyed the Direct a lot. Guess I just gotta be patient for Ike / C. Falcon / Wolf a little while longer...

Same reason he continues to tease the shit out of Palutena

He knows

For Glory looked fine to me up until Riposte pointed out that it's played as a Time match. What the fuck. FD-only is also a knee jerk. I'd sure as hell take that over every stage being included, but there's some great interactions with platforms on neutral stages that players will miss out on. No 2v2 either, for shame.

It would take minimal effort to figure out what the competitive community actually wants. There's countless, countless higher-ups in the community that would jump out of their skin to work with Nintendo on this. I mean, Smash is a popular as fuck competitive game. Maybe Nintendo should try just a little bit to have a dialog with the community and really do the scene justice in the final game.

Nintendo asking the people that are actually going to play the game in stead of deciding what to do by itself doesnt make "nintendo sense" :P Letting the player choose is not their bigest strenght...

Well, if there was ever going to be Smash-type game with characters from only 1 franchise, I'd definitely choose Pokemon even being a Mario fanboy. If any game should be over-represented, Pokemon is the least offensive choice.

does anyone find it odd that in all the footage we've seen their still isnt any voices just character sound effects? im starting to think that they havent started on voice acting yet. or maybe they just wanted the footage from todays direct to appeal to all audiences by not using only english or only japanese voices.

It's kind of disappointing they're doing Time for For Glory, but understandable as people who die a lot will just end up watching the remaining players fight.

It was probably decided early on that based on the "look" of Greninja, it'd work well as a fighter + they wanted some new gen guy representative. I bet it was probably down to Mewtwo plus him at one point too.

If Mewtwo doesn't get in as a fighter, I'd really hope we see him as a Pokeball pokemon who fights as a "player 2" for a while.
