Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 6: Final Destination confirmed for not fun

So about that E3 "leak" stating Pac-Man & Mii would be playable.

C9ZdyS8.png

1. Miis appear as a background character. Very probable that it would be the player's personal mii by default.

Granted, there's the Toon Link argument that a character can be both playable & background. I'd argue that Toon Link is a special case due to being playable in the past & not having him in the train stage would seem not right. But instead I'll point out...

2. The stage icon. If Miis were playable, would they really have a crown for their series icon? Seems strange to fixate solely on Find Mii out of every game they've been in. & if they were playable there certainly wouldn't be any reason this stage would have a different icon from them.

It's not really conclusive evidence but it has me skeptical.
When the Pilotwings stage was shown there was a plane icon. It's very strange...

Time > Stock unless you're doing 1 on 1, seriously no one likes doing a 4 player match for fun with stock unless you enjoy sitting and watching two people play grab ass for 5 minutes.

Time is certainly better for free for all. If For Fun is time, I don't think anyone would complain.

But for 1x1, stock is certainly better.

Love that Mega Man final Smash. Now to think what my button set up will be on the 3ds. Glad they are releasing that while we wait for the Wii U version. Gonna be a great summer with MK8 and Smash 3DS.

For Glory looked fine to me up until Riposte pointed out that it's played as a Time match. What the fuck. FD-only is also a knee jerk. I'd sure as hell take that over every stage being included, but there's some great interactions with platforms on neutral stages that players will miss out on. No 2v2 either, for shame.

It would take minimal effort to figure out what the competitive community actually wants. There's countless, countless higher-ups in the community that would jump out of their skin to work with Nintendo on this. I mean, Smash is a popular as fuck competitive game. Maybe Nintendo should try just a little bit to have a dialog with the community and really do the scene justice in the final game.

Agreed 100%. The Glory mode is already there. Just let the "glory community" shape it.

Eww Stock is terrible and doesn't promote good play at all, it just promotes camping and avoiding battle. Seriously when the goal is just "be the last one standing" why would you ever actively jump into battle? Better to play a fast character with a projectile and just play keep away the whole game letting the other 2-3 players kill each other off. Stock is horrible for 4 players Smash Bros

Stock is better for 1 on 1 though

Was able to watch the Direct, wow at custom moves, and final destination stages. This is my most hyped up game since Brawl and all but guaranteed my game of the year.

Full thoughts on the Direct:

General character design (not the character models but rather the move set direction and ideas behind them) is going in the right direction. They aren't haphazardly creating moves and not thinking about how they will or should be used. Instead, they are actually thinking about how the moves should be used and what purpose they serve in their kit. This may not apply to every character but the changes they have made to characters like Zelda, ZSS, and Olimar (as examples) have clearly been well thought out.

The lot of you might think Olimar with 3 Pikmin significantly nerfs him, which is certainly a valid viewpoint. But if they keep all his Smash attacks the exact same he'll still play the same way except with less Pikmin. The recovery change is to offset the loss of 6 Pikmin, because realistically his tether would be ass with only 3 Pikmin. And the removal of the random variables for what Pikmin color you got is also a good design decision because not only was it random in Brawl on its own but the terrain type of a stage surface affected what Pikmin you got. That in and of itself was working against the Olimar player.

The newcomer stuff are also very thoughtful design decisions. They do take from some of those staple fighting game design choices and it's good to see that for once in a Smash game. Greninja looks like a really great addition to the roster. I don't care if we have 7 Pokemon reps this time (just a random number I picked off the top of my head), if all 7 of those Pokemon are just as unique as Greninja then what does it matter if a franchise has x amount of characters? It's still adding a unique playstyle and move set to the roster.

Separating transformation characters for good is a good decision. They didn't work in Brawl and if you fixed what was wrong with them (loading times) then they would be a nightmare to balance. I'm glad Pokemon Trainer is gone, he was a complete fuck-up in design decisions for a fighting game character. (It's why he was one of the worst characters in Brawl).

Items: Don't care about them but I don't see any that strike me as ridiculous as some of the things we had in Brawl (except I guess the X-Bomb).

Stages: Why the hell would they bring back Jungle Japes from Melee a second time for the 3DS version? I don't get that choice. It's a terrible stage with the water changes they implemented in Brawl.

Other than that, the stage variety seems nice but I'm not a fan of the Yellow Devil element to the Mega Man stage. The vanilla version of that stage will surely focus on fighting the stage rather than the opponents and I'm generally not a fan of that. It's cool fanservice, but I don't like fanservice that interferes with the main gameplay or sacrifices actual interaction between players just to get something "cool" in it. It seems forced in just because.

FD skins of every stage could be really useful for competitive play but I don't expect the stage list to include every single FD-version. Especially if some of them have different blastzones and stage size (which they do by the looks of the footage we saw of the Mario Galaxy FD and Wily Castle FD). My complaint with doing stuff like this is that it takes away entire unique aspects of stages that aren't considered hazardous to competitive play (such as Wily Castle's platforms that appear, those could be really cool to mess with for movement and positioning -- the sad thing is those platforms are only available in the version that also has Yellow Devil). It's great that I have more options for FD-like stages but it would have been nice to have a middleground option too where you can just simply turn off stage hazards like Yellow Devil but keep the unique parts of the stage (mainly the platform layouts).

Online is shitty once again. Actually, no, random online VS is shitty. I don't think that should be a surprise to anyone but apparently it is. No stock matches in random VS? Completely useless to me. Private sessions will be OK but that shouldn't be what an online community thrives on. Yeah, Brawl sort of did for the first year or two but it eventually began to lose steam (especially because of its awful netcode). Maybe Sakurai's team will hear the cries of having stocks in For Glory mode but I doubt it. Timed matches seem to be his go-to for whatever fucking reason despite how clearly broken it is for 2 minute matches on FD.

Custom move sets is what really interests me the most. It looks like it's only for special moves and most likely, they are pre-set choices. But the fact that he was actually aware of something like this being requested and is actually implementing it is nutso to me. It's like he heard of this being requested and saw all the crazy ass mods for Brawl (well... that second half is probably not true lol). Still, I'm really interested in how this will play out. It would be interesting for competitive play if the options for each character aren't blatantly broken. If everyone has access to the same options and it doesn't take forever to choose the changes then I could see this being allowed.

...I think that's about all I was thinking of needing to say. From the footage shown tonight it's still not clear whether hitstun can be canceled by an air dodge again which is concerning but I guess that's something we won't find out for sure about until the release of the 3DS version (yo, seriously, this is why I'm glad the 3DS version is coming out sooner simply because we get to test the gameplay systems out months in advance -- even if the physics might be different between the versions).

I'll probably buy the 3DS version and let that help me decide if I want to get the Wii U one (meh, I'll probably get it anyway just because I'm a Smash fan at heart... I do have a Wii U and there's no other games for it really :P).

I've been playing Smash since 64 came out in 1999, have logged well over a thousand hours into all of the games combined and have played with a variety of people, and I have literally not once met someone (in real life) who told me that they preferred time over stock, even in free for all with all items. It's always, always stock for me.

Do you think we should (nicely) twitter bomb Sakurai to add battlefield stages online? It's way more fun and balanced.

I would also like to see themed battlefields but thats more wishful thinking than anything.

Guys there are just as many Legend Of Zelda characters as there are Pokemon characters. There aren't too many Pokemon characters. They will both probably get one more each. Pokemon will get two more if Mewtwo comes back.

I hope some input can be made on the online modes and stuff. This seems like they're willing to listen, but they're... well, listening wrong.

CRACKPOT WISHES TIME

I am hoping we get at least one character from one of the following series:
-Captain Rainbow
-Chibi-Robo!
-Custom Robo
-Golden Sun
-Magical Starsign
-Pandora's Tower
-Trace Memory
-Xenoblade
(note: Hoping for at least one from one of these, not saying I want one from each of these).

I am hoping we get a stage based off of at least one of these:
-1080° Snowboarding
-Disaster
-Endless Ocean
-The Last Story
-Pandora's Tower
-Spirit Camera/Fatal Frame
-Xenoblade
(note: Hoping for at least one from one of these, not saying I want one from each of these).

Let my crackpot wishing begin.

For Glory would primarily be for 1v1... that's why people are saying stocks should be for that mode. But you're still nuts for having this perspective, no one I know plays Time only even for 4 player free for alls.

The best thing about Final Destination variants (though it should also be Battlefield, etc. variant) is that now we can make decent versions of really crappy or abusive stages like New Pork City.

Because some people feel that Pokemon is being over-represented. There were only 5 characters in the Mario Universe in the last game. Considering that Jigglypuff is likely to be back, Mewtwo has been rumoured for ages, and there could always be another surprise down the line, the total could easily rise to 7+.

Like it's been said multiple times in several topics, there were already six playable Pokemon characters in Brawl; they were just packaged differently thanks to Pokemon Trainer. Very unlikely that we're getting 7 Pokemon. Mewtwo and Jiggs will return; 6 is my bet. Frankly, the amount is justified considering it's almost inarguably Nintendo's second biggest franchise.

And to be fair, Mario has a ton of representation in Smash Bros; considering its extended universe, Mario has about 8 reps.

I still don't think Ivysaur and Squirtle are necessarily out. They basically would only need one attack each to become complete characters. Also, the old Venosaur and Blastoise pokeball Pokemon didn't appear in the CG teaser. Considering the amount of content they seem to be reusing from previous games, like the Subspace enemies, I'll be surprised if they're removed just because the switch mechanic isn't there anymore.

Stages: Why the hell would they bring back Jungle Japes from Melee a second time for the 3DS version? I don't get that choice. It's a terrible stage with the water changes they implemented in Brawl.

They're probably bringing it from Brawl, not Melee. Don't forget that the development of this game started by porting Brawl.

Whenever I play 4 Person FFA, we always do time. Dunno, just like the feel of everyone fighting to the end, people thinking they won only for the results to be shown. It's fun.

My stance is that they're getting a lot of their big series content out of the way. Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon have been shown a lot in characters/stages/items. I expect each to have the most character slots taken.

However, a lot of obvious characters haven't even been touched on yet, like Captain Falcon, or Ness, or the like. I suspect they're sort of fore-fronting the Mario/Zelda/Pokemon content to let more niche series take-up the back-end for the more hardcore or niche audiences.

in my house, playing something that is not stock is not even an option, like 0%

Honestly, i thought that that was the norm... im surprised.
