Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 6: Final Destination confirmed for not fun

Fun fact: 28% of the posts in this thread were made in the last 24 hours (since the Direct started). The thread was created 16 days ago.

Just a tad mind blowing =P

I agree with him, I don't think releasing the 3DS first will result in fewer Wii U sales...

Delaying the 3DS version artificially just to make sure the Wii U version comes out first just seems bad for everyone.

This all depends on how much you believe in smash bros. selling power. I also believe that releasing 3DS version first wont severely affect the Wii U versions sales. I believe that Smash is meant for a big screen and most of its fans agree with this and will be getting it on Wii U despite the 3DS version coming out first. That version will just be a warm up version as well as an on the go fun version. Not to mention we don't know what kind of exclusives the Wii U version will have =)

You're making a lot of suppositonal arguments for why the Wii U one might be better, but at the end of the day, Nintendo is asking people to pay more for an experience that's more or less equal to what they've had for six months. It's not like the two are equally priced or Nintendo has some sort of cross-buy thing going here. People will spent $40 on Smash Bros. and then Nintendo is going to act totally baffled why they're not paying another $60.

Well, you're presupposing a bit here as well. Iwata's gone on pretty strong record about how via the NNID account history there will be loyalty programs that reward people who buy a certain amount of or specific software. We do not know for a fact that, for owners of the 3DS game, the Wii U game will cost $60.

But that said,

Will there be people who do it? Sure. Will there be 12 million people who do it? Certainly not. So we might be looking at the worst-selling Smash game since 64 that's also cross-platform. That's surely something to brag about.

I do not believe enough people will buy the 3DS version of the game to create this situation. It's not like the 3DS game is getting all the media coverage, and the Wii U one is some kind of secret. Honestly, my expectation is more that the 3DS game just will not sell very well, and will potentially not even be pushed very hard by Nintendo. I do not expect an enormous amount of people to upgrade from one version of the game to the other, same as you. But where we differ is that I believe a large number of people simply won't buy the 3DS game, and will opt to wait for the Wii U one they know is coming. Even on a forum as enthusiast as this one, the poll numbers show far fewer people planning to buy only the 3DS version. I think in the wider world, most people who are into the game don't necessarily even own a 3DS, and certainly won't find the same-room multiplayer experiences they're looking for with the game even if they owned one. Userbases or release dates be damned, SSB3DS just flat-out will not provide the multiplayer that most people want. Even if Joe SSB doesn't know the Wii U version is coming, he aint gonna pick up a 3DS for a game he can't play with his friends.

I feel like there hasn't been a lot of discussion on the customizeable movesets. Seems like a huge deal to me. Remember stuff like everyone hating link's charge spin attack nerf? What if you had various options for how it works andhoew much damage it does? Sounds like a game changer.

When he made the announcement I was kinda indifferent, but thought it might be fun. Going back to it though, it does intrigue me and I want to know more. I'm guessing this is where some the connectivity between versions comes in.

GAFers are not representatives of even regular gaming audiences. Most of the board thinks the 3DS is a terrible POS and the Vita is the best thing since sliced bread, but the market doesn't bear that out.

Everyone in this thread buying both versions would be about 0.008333333333333333% of Brawl or Melee's 12 million individual sales.

But that audience may or may not even know that a Wii U version is coming until Christmas shopping time rolls around.

So here are the scenarios.

1) You've been playing this great portable Smash Bros for 6 months, then find out a new one is getting released for the Wii U this Christmas! With better graphics, more stages, better online, more music! That's exciting, kids would want it, right?

or

2) You've been playing the Wii U Smash Bros since Christmas and then hear there's a 3DS port coming out in a few months but with worse graphics and less content. BORING.

or

3) Wii U and 3DS versions both release at the same time - budget minded parents will buy whichever one is cheaper OR whichever one is for a system their kid already has. Nintendo would sell fewer games, fewer 3DSes, and fewer Wii Us.

Maybe I'm just rooting for Nintendo, but it makes sense to me.

I admit my argument is moot if the Wii U version is at a budget price of $40 or below.

But I'll bet a copy of the game it's not going to be.

If Nintendo is smart they'll do a promotional where owners of the 3DS version can purchase the Wii U version for a discount. Of course, that isn't saying much when it presupposes two things: that a person has a Club Nintendo account and wishes to download Super Smash Bros. Wii U digitally.

no, the 3DS is well liked on GAF, although the Vita is clearly over-represented (so is the Wii U, for that matter!)

This is on point, my man.

So making the following assumptions:
  • Every vet from Brawl is returning
  • The leaked list is 100% correct
  • There are no unknown fighters at this point

This would be what we'd be looking at:

I think I'd be okay with this

It's certainly not an awful roster, though it lacks a lot of the impact that reveals like WFT could have.

I'm still riding on the theory that the second rumor is total bunk, though.

You could say the same thing about Mario Kart though, and the handheld editions of that seem to do okay.

Couldn't agree with this more. I honestly do not see the Wii U version taking such a huge hit since its so far after the 3ds version AND at christmas time potentially. its like getting a huge expansion or something. So many different stages, music, the online will definitely be better, being able to play it on the big screen with an actual controller and who knows what else exclusives.

Y'know, they've powered ZSS up (for some reason) and all, but... I wish they would make Power Suit Samus better as well. In every game she's been in, it's been established that she's faster, stronger and more agile in her suit (save for Smash, natch).

I made one with the characters revealed in the Direct.

YUCY4P.png

You know with shiek's design, in brawl I thought she had a very stitched together and bandaged up ninja design, and she does but now with more detial the parts on her legs look like very flexible types of armor she tied onto it, that's awesome.

4) You've been playing this nice Smash for 6 months on the 3DS, why spend $300 to upgrade?

don't get me wrong, they are doing it to maximize their profits, but not to help Wii U

You could say the same thing about Mario Kart though, and the handheld editions of that seem to do okay.

I think Mario Kart games have a gameplay mechanic, "racing," that's a bit more conducive to single player experiences than a fighting game. And they've done a really good job there of transitioning into a more online experience for multiplayer, which Brawl bungled horribly. Mario Kart's also much more of a phenomenon overall than SSB ever has been.

That said, point taken.

This roster would be so good. It's making me wish I were more optimistic about there not being any cuts.

Why upgrade? because amazing games like Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, Smash Bros. U and new zelda on the horizon =P

So I haven't played Pokemon since Gameboy color, how do I get this Protean Greninja?
Since other people have told you how to get one, I'll just explain why Protean is awesome: Whenever a Pokemon uses an attack of its type, it gets a 1.5 bonus to that attack's damage. This is often called "STAB" (Same type as battler). Whenever a Pokemon with Protean attacks, its type changes to the type of the attack, meaning a Protean Greninja basically gets 1.5x as much damage on all non-Water attacks. You can also use Protean to dodge supereffective damage on many attacks, although Greninja's pitiful defenses mean it still has to tread carefully.

varia suit samus has been receiving buffs aswell
ZSS might be OP tho since she was already top tier in brawl

Oy.

1) Didn't I just buy you a Smash Brothers?

2) Who? All the people that own a Wii U as opposed to a 3DS?

3) Which brings us to the point that another poster made - $300 for the Wii U version. Don't get me wrong - 3DS always comes out on top. Just more in certain situations than others. What they're doing is a good move to maximize 3DS sales.

The roster looks great, but since you're assuming all vets will return from SSBB, where are Ivysaur and Squirtle? Perhaps you can shuffle it to include them as standalone characters (something I think is still absolutely possible).

I'd be completely okay with this if this was the final roster, but I really hope Ridley and/or Bayonetta are in the game...
Also Mewtwo... but I don't think he's ever coming back...

I heard the charge beam looks a bit faster.

Still, she's gonna need a lot more than that. Samus has been bottom tier in two games and mid-tier in another. She's got it nearly as bad as Link.

Ah, right.

And I agree. Metroid is one of my favorite series, but Samus is bad pretty often. At least I have Kirby, but still (also, Smash Punch in the trailer - my expectations were correct).

this has to be less than 500k worldwide right
lol

Srsly.

Charizard always looked like clay in Smash, very lumpy and defined features. Compare to X and Y.

Better lighting works wonders.

If only Samus was as agile as she was in Other M.

Mewtwo's still totally possible. Gen 6 is the hardest he's been pushed since Gen 1. He received not one, but TWO Mega Evolutions, and recently starred in a major movie. The only Pokémon that TPC has pushed harder is Charizard.

At this point, I'm basically expecting he Gematsu leak to be accurate, so newcomers will include (but not necessarily be limited to) Pac-Man, Mii, Palutena, Shulk, Chrom and Chorus Men, bringing the total number of newcomers to 12. If those 12 are the only newcomers, then I can see them revealing another three at E3 (one of which would be Pac-Man, to mirror last E3's trio with Mega Man), and then the remaining characters could be saved for launch.

Mewtwo, meanwhile, would be classified as a vet. And I'm still optimistic Ivysaur and Squirtle will return. They're wonderfully well-done characters who diversify the roster by being more colorful "cute" Pokémon, and Ivysaur in particular was unique for how he ran on all fours. Sakurai likes unique, and Sakurai doesn't want to cut. Furthermore, Sakurai left us hanging on their fate -- I don't think he'd do that, only to cut them in the end.

They already will own a wiiU because of mario kart
I am really sure if the wiiU version was released first, the minority would be buying the 3DS version. This is basically the call of duty situation with the wii last gen.

also sakurai has pointed out samus has a faster and stronger beam attack in a potd.
basically every character has gotten a buff or whatever in some way this time around, he just didnt point it all out.

I think Chorus is pretty wild but yeah, I agree, that second list was way more out there and the only one it got right was a pretty vague non-specific character

I broke it up a bit more for where each presumed character is coming from:

you might wanna revisit that statement come June

Wait, there was a 2nd Gematsu leak??? how did I miss this

Link please?

and holy shit if there's a playable rhythm heaven character, that's all I ever wanted aside from Palutena! Dream roster.
