Idle Thumbs Megathread | Indepth discussion inbetween horsebags and birdsounds

When I hear the new theme song I picture myself walking down a marble aisle lined by velvet ropes and golden arcade machines.

yeesh guys the meta-commentary was out of control this episode. I love the way you analyze games and situations more than their outward appearance, but you talked about Escape Goat 2 for 20-30 minutes without actually allowing Danielle to describe what she likes about the game at all.

Chris, maybe a fun platformer is just a fun platformer and doesn't need to have its own identity :-P

Sean needs to take it down a notch. I love the guy, he is funny and often what he says is insightful, but the duder needs to give others a turn at things. It felt like the other podblasters got sidelined real hard this episode. I blame this on jake not being there and nick not being there and sighing exhaustively.

Things did skew a tad toward the "head up our own buttocks" this week. Also the South Park stuff was a bit uncomfortable, and Danielle's comments had the bad taste of young privileged white people declaring the line of what is and isn't offensive while taking an undeserved and uncalled for moral high ground.

Speaking of Roger Ebert on this weeks episode is beneficial to sum up it up. Roger Ebert was a thoughtful, knowledgeable film critic who did plenty good work in his field and was able to reach a mass audience with his work without pandering or altering his views.

Roger Ebert is also the guy who was confused by the plot of the movie Predator, a film that's story ranks below the more sophisticated GI Joe cartoons of the 1980's.

Sometimes you swing and you miss.

I was thinking the same thing. I've never heard a discussion incept itself as much as it did this episode, and while I enjoyed it to a point... after a little while I got completely lost in it.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I love Sean to bits, but I'd love him even more if he could maybe make a mental/physical note of what he wants to say and lets others finish before trying to get his point across. It's a habit I had (and still have, to an extent) owing to ADHD which I struggle with on a regular basis, so I'm super-sensitive when it happens on IT. Hopefully Mr. V can tone (control) it down as well so everyone can get a turn :)

I think Jake is great for the cast in that he often represents the listener who isn't hyper-knowledgeable on whatever topic is being discussed, and is able to prevent such discussions from becoming too complex to follow. Or at least, able to summarise what's being discussed into a simple sentence or two that pretty much every listener can grasp.

On another note, I think I'm going to get the South Park game. Especially after finding out there's a patch for the Australian PC version to uncensor it. Woop.

yeah this episode was revealing as to how much leg-work jake does outside of his own insights and jokes to keep things balanced

that said i'm glad they keep bringing back danielle who is a really excellent guest overall

Like the intro, just wish they got rid of the super high faux trumpet note. Hurts my ears.

Edit; Man, people are overtalking each other while they are talking about media literacy, or lack there from "the general populous". UGH.
Save us Nick/Jake.

Its like Sean lost the ability to talk about mechanics in a coherent way.

Edit2: You guys are on couches now?! No wonder IdleThumbs convo went into casual-mode, amarite?!
Joking

100%.

Not only that but there was a lot of cruft where Chris was continually mentioning that he wasn't sure if his opinion was valid/didn't mean it in this that or the other way/ etc etc etc.

God I love the new theme though

She really is a fantastic guest. I like her a bunch.

Very weird episode, the discussion on journalism and reviews really needed some guidance or another voice to have chimed in. Leland discussion was probably the highlight for me.

The first half of the podcast this week was kind of rough.

Yeah... I don't think any of the Thumbs guys will benefit from knowing that I didn't enjoy it much, but I agree. Well, every day can't be Christmas.

These guys are so good when they're talking about things they like. And on the plus side, anyone heard the Music of Idle Thumbs tracks yet? You get a download code for them if you buy the vinyl they're selling on the Idle Thumbs store. Really good version of "Space Asshole" on there.

Didn't like this cast, really don't like the new theme. Feels like the first time I had a completely different read on the topics they hit on than them. They were too safe in some places and just wrong in others. And I haven't minded Danielle before, but...bleh. Where Jake is a spicy powder in the stew she's only white rice on the side.

I know. Im a jerk. Its like my opinion man.

I enjoyed this episode. It was certainly pretty broad in its topics, and a bit rambly. I laughed though, and I especially liked the talk on South Park.

Yeah, I agree. I wonder if I would have even noticed if this thread hadn't primed me to pay close attention to Sean. Maybe. He did say that he cut Danielle off a lot though, so probably? Probably. Either way, good talk was had regardless.

Super good episode. Top notch. Scatter-shot critical deep-dives is what I crave.
If Danielle was 4th-chair sub for when Nick is (often) out then I would be cool with that.

I thought this episode was super-great. It sure appears to be something that's dividing people though!

I thought it was pretty poor TBH. Mostly cause Jake isnt there. :P

Also it felt like Danielle had some interesting points to make during the cast but often just ended up agreeing with Sean or Chris' points instead just to be polite.

Yeah... The past couple times she's been on, she's tried to start off by talking about games that she's enjoyed recently. As a fan of the Thumbs, I really appreciated that-- it's the sort of stuff I crave because I think they have good taste and I'm always on the lookout for new stuff that I will enjoy.

The trouble is that when you're recording a podcast, there's a pressure to keep conversation going; and when someone else is talking about a game that you haven't played, you're going to try to contribute to that conversation in ways that sometimes end up being detrimental to the conversation, or worse. That's why I've been such a fan of the 'casts that the Thumbs record after streaming a game: The resulting conversation is one to which everyone can contribute, and is always better for it in my opinion.

I doubt she's reading this, but if the Thumbs ever have Danielle back on the show (and they should!), I hope she continues to bring up games that she likes; and it would be even better if she could bring one or two of those games with her and have everyone try them out beforehand.

It's weird. I don't think I listen to Idle Thumbs for video game recommendations, yet I've ended up playing a bunch of stuff that I may not have otherwise if not for Idle Thumbs. In any case, I would really worry if they started focusing their conversation too much on a regimented "What have you been playing?" just for the sake of doing it. The more organic and diverse discussions that spring up from talking about what they've been playing are more important to me than the fact that they're talking about what they've been playing.

Also, I think Danielle's great on the podcast. She fits in and plays well off the rest of the cast members.

I enjoyed it all, but yeah it did kinda dawn on me that they talked about Escape Goat 2 for a while without ever telling you what it was really like to play the game.

I hope they talk about Goat Simulator next week.

I just finished the episode while playing some Diablo 3, and came here to pretty much reiterate this, although maybe not as harshly. There were multiple times during the episode where I got that feeling you get when reading a book and you suddenly realize you've glazed over and lost the plot and have to go back a page or two, yet I couldn't figure out how far back to go because everything was just so far gone from anything resembling a solid thread.

I really miss silly Idle Thumbs. Its dawned on me recently that the show just isn't much fun anymore, at least for me. It feels more like an exercise in criticism or in defining how things are or should be in the industry now, more so than it is about just really intelligent people that I like, talking about actual experiences with video games. The show has always been very smart and analytical, but there was always a sense of joviality to it, and a significant dose of silliness when poking fun at how dumb the industry can be, where as now it just feels like taking a weekly master class that is solely focused on the academics of the hobby.

I still go back and listen to old Idle Thumbs quite a bit, and miss looking forward to the overt silliness mixed with really intelligent conversations about games. It's hokey to say, but it really brought a lot of enjoyment to my week. And it isn't just one particular episode or anything; I think Danielle actually fits really well with the group, it was just this particular episode that crystallized it for me. Of course the lake of Jake significantly brings the silly quotient down, too.

I feel it's mostly Sean's influence because the moment they bring F. Nick back it turns back into the good old madness we all love. It's not to say that it's necessarily worse now but it definitely is different.

As for Danielle I really liked her appearances so far and could easily see her become a regular.

I enjoyed the previous episode. The discussion was definitely more analytical that most eps, but the conversation also felt more free wheeling like a bombcast episode (i guess its fitting that this ep was longer than your average thumbs pod).

I wouldnt mind Danielle being a regular if her schedule permits, she fits in really well with the crew.

Woah, is the store new? I just noticed that it exists. I think I'm gonna have to grab one of those shirts the next time I have the chance.

More importantly, is the store's about page new? It is absolutely exuberant.

Damn, you're killing me with cleverness here. Even the message after picking the shirt color is clever:

"Thanks. Your response is valuable to us, but so is everybody else's, so don't get too excited."

Though honestly I still favor the basic blue.

The blue may come back at some point in the future, but since we do real screenprinted runs of all our stuff (as opposed to shitty on-demand printing) and since we are a super small company, we have to be careful not to overorder, so it's tough for us to just keep stuff perpetually available. We do have a good number of blue ones left for now but if you want one it's probably a good idea to get it sooner rather than later.

I've forgotten who was excited by Smash and was disgusted with themselves for being excited about Smash. Was it Jake?

I remember wandering around Melbourne hopelessly lost as I was listening to you guys pontificate hilariously about Evo. Good times.

Yeah it was Jake. Smash spurs his latent Nintendo fanboyism.

I agree with Chris on BaS ep 2 being weird in over explaining details it already explained, though it first struck me with the BI stuff and not B1. I understood
Fink and Suchong were aware of each other
from audio diaries in Infinite and BaS ep 1! I dont need a whole level dedicated to that concept beating me over the head with that detail

Overall, Burial at Sea was poorly written compared to Infinite or the original Bioshock. People talk and talk in these DLC, but most of it isn't even worth hearing.

I can't remember if Danielle mentioned it on the podcast or not (I could've sworn she did) but I read a review of hers as well of Monument Valley for iOS and *highly* recommend it. You'll never look at a totem pole the same way again.

So, Burial at Sea is Levine's Kojima moment? Huh. What Sean described, tying everything together becoming the thing, is basically MGS4 and to some extent the entire Saga.
