Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 6: Final Destination confirmed for not fun

My biggest issue with Pac Man getting in is that he has never really been seen as a Nintendo ip in the slightest, and honestly I don't see him generating legit hype. Nintendo really seems to like Smash as a marketing tool, I mean that would explain why Greninja and Charizard are in after Pokemon X/Y. I don't think I'd be offended but eh I don't and I can't think of anyone else I know of personally who cares about him as a character.

This is also why I'm really worried about C. Falcon seeing how we haven't had an F Zero game in a while. I can totally see Sakurai or someone else Sakurai might listen to thinking "well, whatever, he's not relevant anymore".

I dunno, Pac-Man has had some exclusive Nintendo presence. Hell, Miyamoto is the person who designed Pac-Man VS (in something that was clearly a prelude to the Wii U) and was developed by Nintendo EAD.

You could argue the same of Mega Man. Nothing Mega Man is happening so why bother putting it in. Smash isn't just a marketing tool. Greninja and Charizard weren't put in to advertise, they were put in because they were popular

One of the most undoubtedly iconic and important video game characters of all time is irrelevant?

Yes.

Pacman is one of the most known video game characters of all time.

Pacman is like the chess of video games, the formula is tried and true and there is only so much you can do to expand on it. And most people don't play it or give a shit about besides " oh... chess"

I am not going to say i do not want pekmen, i do want pekmen. I will not pretend anyone besides like the dudes on gaint bomb and us, actually give a shit about pekmen smash.

I'm not saying Smash is "just" a marketing tool, but I'm sure a decent number of characters are put in to generate interest in Nintendo's other ip's.

I just happen to think Pac Man isn't a good fit for the game. Deal with it.

It's already dealt with. But your response, it seems unnecessarily defensive...

At any rate, I just find it strange that you think that one character choice with a well-developed history with Nintendo could bring the entire quality of the game down. I mean, Pac-Man fits more than Snake, and I thought Snake fit very well in Smash Bros. You don't have to like the character for Smash...but that opinion seems a little extreme.

Well I don't think that F-Zero is as dead as you think it is. With Maximum Velocity one of the games leading the Wii U GBA VC charge, and GP Legend on its way, I can taste something on the air.

F-Zero has not had a real release since, what, 2004? I haven't seen the series mentioned in any significant way for a looooooooooooooong time. I'd love to see it come back.

Either way I'd be really mad if Captain Falcon doesn't make the cut. I won't lie, I'm a Melee diehard, some people here seem to frown on that but whatever, so I'm already sorta on the fence about this game. I feel like the inclusion of Falcon would help sway me to at least believe he still gives a crap about long time fans. Brawl legitimately felt like a slap to the face so now I'm just sorta awkwardly watching to see how this turns out.

I don't understand how people can consider Sakurai dropping Falcon. I'm a Captain Falcon fan and I've never played F-Zero; I consider Smash his franchise. He's one of the original 12, and SSB64 even started with Capt. Falcon-like characters before it eventually became a Nintendo all-stars game.

The fact that he's a vet and we got DDD and Lucario announced before him with zero hints of him returning is sorta fueling the fire.

Of course I'd love to believe I'm wrong. I'd also love to believe tripping was never a thing Sakurai intentionally put into a game!

I'm pretty sure he is in the game. The same goes for Ness. On the other hand, Jigglypuff....

Like Yoshi, right?

You know whatwould be amazing. If every single franchise that didnt have a release to reveal a character on had one.

In fact, the craziest thing Nintendo could do is show off the smash bros roster, and then say, "By the end of this/next year, ALL of those faces will either have had or have new releases on the WiiU/3ds"

There isn't actually a single reason to expect captain falcon to be cut. There never has been any reason. They choose to not reveal the entire roster simultaneously. Therefore characters are revealed gradually. Not enough time has passed for everybody to be revealed. There has never been an actual reason to suspect that any unrevealed characters are getting cut, let alone a game franchise being dropped by the roster entirely. Stop panicking about capt falcon. Stop panicking about having an earthbound rep. Maybe panic about snake if you want because 3rd party deals could be temporary contracts or something. But don't go out of your way to manufacture reasons to be upset.

Exactly.

No, it isn't? Falcon isn't going to be cut and there is absolutely no reason to believe that.

Brawl felt like an awesome love letter for a Nintendo fan, like me. A shame you didn't enjoy it, Meele diehard fan :(

It was sorta enjoyable when I really sucked at both games. The more time I put into the series and the more I matured in general the more the flaws really stuck out.

Also I don't know what kind of awesome love letter includes a game where Falcon and Ganondorf are unbelievably trash, even in casual play.

And my lord at the replies, I'm not saying it's 100% confirmed he's cut or some shit, I'm saying I would not be surprised if he was because I don't really trust Sakurai and not actually getting confirmation isn't helping. I will say it's nice to see the confidence everyone has though.

When has Sakurai ever actually cut a character because it's no longer relevant?

Hell, Melee and Brawl had Ice Climbers in and they had one game in 1985. Come on.

There's no reason to not trust him.

Brawl was a love letter, just sloppily written and ignoring the most important aspect: the actual combat. It's not hard to realize with the slow pace, irresponsibly left in chain-grabs, the tripping, unnecessary nerfs, bad Final Destination design, and air dodge nerfs that the game can barely be considered a fighter. If they balance for the top competitive players then it will still be fun for the casuals who are just throwing pokeballs the entire match. We can only use all past fighters and Project M to attest to that.

Also he did cut Roy, we could say Ike/Marth is just as good but in the end he was cut and replaced since he wasn't in the latest FE game.

We still havent accepted that Smash does whatever it wants?
The "rules" fans comes up with as to why a character is in or isn't is just silly.

Falcon and Ness have been hidden and not shown off before launch in 2 of the 3 smash bros games

Jigglypuff has been hidden and not shown off before launch in all 3 games

Both Luigi and Marth (characters that have always been hidden at the start) Sakurai even pointed out "they are usually hidden characters but for REASONS I'm showing them now"

Jigglypuff, Ness, and C Falcon aren't going anywhere, they're probably just hidden/unlockable. For 2 of the 3 melee is the exception with them being available from the start so lets not panic if we don't see them before smash bros 4 release date

Hes not talking about combat. Hes talking about stuff like the music, stages, trophies, characters, items, etc.

And in that case Brawl outclasses Melee handily

It doesn;'t by no means.
Sakurai still has to get approval on things, and 3rd parties have to be kind of a messy situation all together.

However his job seems to a bit more free form, than what have conveyed to me and what i have read and seen involving these crossover dealies.

Yeah my biggest issue is the idea that "Brawl is a quality game if you don't view at it like a competitive player". Like somehow being more casual means I should ignore blatant horrible design decisions and things that should have been addressed for sure. The game being good for competitive play doesn't hurt casual players but the opposite does actually hurt another community. So come the fuck on.

Also I think Sakurai is straight up lying when he claims he's behind every moves frame data/hit boxes etc. His claim basically means he somehow went from reeeallly paying attention to what he was doing and making really smart decisions for a lot of characters to balance them for serious play to "lol DDD has a super dumb chaingrab that can infinite 5 people, whatever". We found DDD can do that in like...a day.

Edit:

Uhhh I disagree. Brawl's music and stage quality is all over the place. The character balance is far worse. Items have been improved I suppose, but beyond that yeah no I can't even kinda agree.

Heh, Dedede means nothing. Sakurai wouldn't cut a Kirby character. That's his baby. Hell, he probably made Dedede throw only gordos to free up Waddle Dee as a newcomer :P

maybe it's a hidden character, and hidden characters are not announced in the daily updates till next to the release as a spoiler if i remember correctly

also, ganondorf was one of my main :(

Although Kid Icarus Uprising and Fire Emblem in the West surely happened beacuse of Smash

Which is hilarious as we almost didn't get Marth and Roy in the US version of Smash, thank god that didn't happen

On another note how big do we think this games roster is going to be? We already have 29 confirmed characters 6 (10) away from Brawl's 35 (39 after transformarions) and it seems like we still have quiet a few more reveals left to go if the leaks are to be true.

If I had to guess now I'd say 49 seems like a decent roster count for smash 4 (4 rows of 10 and a 5th row of 9 and random) would give us 10-14ish newcomers depending on cuts. Heck maybe Smash 4's starting roster will be the same as Brawl's final roster wouldn't that be crazy

Watching this and hearing them mention Soul Caliber 2 at the end kind of makes me want Nightmare in this game over Pacman. I think he'd be more interesting in terms of combat.

Give Pacman the Namco stage or something instead.

Nightmare doesn't really have the appeal that third party characters should have.

Everyone knows Pac-man. Nearly nobody knows Nightmare.
