Dark Souls II |OT2| Prepare to Vengarl

Oh, I haven't reached these places yet. This explains that.

I'll be honest, the Black Gulch is super boring/annoying so I've kind of stopped progressing. It's probably the weakest part of the game so far. I wasn't a huge fan of its equivalents in previous games but they had interesting stuff at least.

Whoa, really? That area is about 30 seconds long, seriously just run through it if it's causing that much anxiety. Easy peasy boss at the end and then you're done with that branch.

Oh, I tried like twice, missed a jump on the second time, lost all my souls, got annoyed at the statues, said "fuck it" and went back to comb older areas and do some coop.

I'm not saying it's hard, I don't know, my experience with it was just that it was pretty uninteresting while I had bend having lots of fun up to that point. I don't doubt I can rush through it.

I find the 'PvP honor code' discussions really interesting. Honestly i think the only thing that i don't let people do is apply effects. If you can do that during the fight good for you but im not letting you do it. Anything else is fair game. Chug if you can get away with it.

It's really depends. In DS1 you went to designated PvP spots where you would let each other buff, pop a weed and bow. But here you never know who you invade and if it's some guy who just wants to get through this part of the game then I don't blame him for using any tactic he can. My guess is this is why they allowed healing in Arena. You need to know how to fight healers in this game. It's just part of it.

Agreed, pvp honor code or duel etiquette should only be applied to matches that are purposely organized and planned between the two people. Invasions? Screw the rules, your main purpose is to find the opponent and murder his ass in anyway possible.

The only real "honor" things PvP is no ganking and no estus. Alot of things are eye rollers like old sun ring, I think it's a waste but whatever.

Taunting/bowing or whatever before hand was always a nice gesture.

edit: I'm talking mainly in PvP hotspots like Iron Keep.

Anyone want to help me out in the copse right now? I am recording for my let's play mostly, but I want to record a showcase of the dead again hex..it is by far the coolest magic for me in all three souls games. It allows you to incinerate foes who come close to dead bodies. It does not stack, but does 800 damage per body even with my low character who has not fully upgraded any staff or chime etc. He does have 35 faith and 20 INT however. Obviously I have already kited numerous hollows over to the bridge to the Torturer Tunnel, kited the torturers out of there and incinerated them in two casts (the OHK is possible I just didn't time it right the first time to get all at once.) I recorded this part already, and will link it when published, but still want to do record a couple invasions....its just that there are no red signs consistently in the copse right now with this character at such low level..he is only level 95 or so with a SM of 800K. I also want to do a showcase of how to use Dead Again for the chariot boss, i.e. use dead skellies to kill the chariot BEFORE the lever is even pulled....there are lots of hosts to just pick up and help, but it would require one or two helpers that know what they are doing and preferably have the spell equipped also, as to cover more area once the necromancers are dead, and who would not kill the boss any other way than what is intended, just using Dead Again, once all skellies are finished. Pretty sure my chariot boss is still alive and I can be the host.

Anyone interested in being a sacrificial lamb as an invader or being a highly composed Dead Again helper either PM me or simply friend me on PSN:

yeah, I just broke down and watched a YouTube of a guy soloing it.

Four things I took from it:

-a lot of stamina is good (all the running)
-a lot of HP is good (in the event his flame vomit hits you on the outside of the range. Actually saw this guy barely survive the blast because he had so much HP.)
-no need for armor and a shield.
-you can kind of control the dragon's pattern;
i.e. get a few hits in on his foot, run out a bit away from his head, trigger his standing flame breath, run back for some hits, haul ass to the northeast of his shadow when you start seeing the wings flap, rinse-repeat

Then again, I also saw some guy beat the AD with only his fists on like NG++++ or something, so I guess a good enough player can make any boss fight look easy. :p
I did it naked with red tearstone ring and sunlight blade. I was getting one shot any way, so basically it had to be an all-out offensive with as much stamina as possible, defense was useless for me. You're right, stamina is key for this fight... and a lot of luck. I had a run of attempts where I just got one shot as soon as I got through the door. The time I beat it, I got very lucky with it jumping back and giving me lots of space without having to worry about running out of room to run and avoid the fire.

You do get to learn his patterns just because of how many times you die!

There are plenty of things that make my eyes roll too but I hold my L's in relatively good spirits. Ive had quite a few hilarious wins/deaths against gimmick builds as well. I do make it a point to throw down a hello and i wont attack someone who is bowing or gesturing at the start of a match. That's pretty much the extent of my courtesy.

Note that it only gives you a single point of sin. You need 10 points of sin for you to be invaded by Blue spirits.
Still think is BS to be honest. My only "sin" was to invade L
icia
, had never invaded or attacked any NPC and I still got invaded by blue spirits in NG+. Stopped seeing them as soon as I died to one.

Do you know if I can buff poison-imbued Manslayers with rotten pine resin?
You can't, sadly. You can infuse them with poison though. Their AR drops very little and they become even more poisonous.

This is the only Bastard +10 I know :P

His armour looks just like the King's armour too...!

Edit: yikes, that's one blurry pic up close. Sorry, didn't find a better one. O_o
Edit: found a thumbnail that's easier on the eyes

I still think it's some kind of bug. I've killed L
icia
several times on different characters and I've not been marked as sinner/invaded by blues, even when I killed some other NPCs in addition to that.

I have accepted and made peace with the fact that I will never beat the AD.

Vendrick is doable with four giant souls anyway

You can cheat. Use an ascetic in shaded woods to get Gowins Ring of protection. Now you can take 3 AD breaths in your back without dying.

Wow, the Giant Mages in Memory of V really fucking blow. ANy advice because I can't get past them. I kill the first one, but, the second one kills me.

If you time it right, you don't have to kill any of them, honestly. The first one that busts through the door, give it a bit of time and it'll wander back from the door and you can run past it. The next two, just sprint between them. Sometimes you'll make it, sometimes they'll clip you. The remaining ones, just spring past them and hug the left wall of the building there. The last one, you can totally just run past and grab the soul from the dead giant.

Having a blast with my new mage. Faced my 1st invader in the Belfry Luna. 1-shotted him with GRS. This is going to be fun.

I'm raping people with my hexer, I love it. I can cast soul greatsword, heal, grs, resoment weapon, etc. Using just one staff ;)

Putting in work for the BoB. I love being invaded by blues. Only time I lost was to a guy with dual avelins.

The rattling of chains is pretty freaky haha

And teeth.

PVP talk: I can't even bring myself to estus, even against a red invader. I'm just an idiot like that I guess. I'm also a RoLP whore so I don't give a shit, I want a good duel ... and never get it; always just some borderline-twink build that 2- or 3-shots me amidst lag.

Bows also feel wrong. No matter the distance, as long the target is in your range the damage is always the same.
What's this shit, seriously?

I'm curious to see what happens, actually. I'd really rather play offline anyway.

Do everyone a favor then and play offline.

Red and blue eyes are no longer unlimited use, and every time you do that, you are costing another player some time investment in the game. When I invade someone, I'm all for them using whatever tactics they can to kill me - even if it includes ganking me with 2 other players. But the one thing that is more annoying than anything is to get the invasion prompt and then when I finally load into the other game, I get booted because the player disconnected. You are basically only making the experience crappy for other players, especially since you already state that you'd rather play offline anyway.

Just my thoughts.

since the game is finally out next week for me, theres a few questions Ive been wanting to ask about it in preparation. Feel free to spoiler tag the anwsers if you think thats needed somehow.

1 - What is the number at which diminishing returns start for stats.

2 - Was there ever a consensus on Adaptability? is it needed, is it useless, what is it?

3 - Do mage spells look more...flashy compared to Demons and Dark? I remember early trailers (yes, "those" trailers) mage spells looked way better and more like...you know, powerful mage spells and not tiny little balls of light.

4 - Did the enemy respawns eventually stopping ended up being as scary as it sounded initially? I finished Dark Souls twice, but Im not the best at it, and both times I was probably grossly overleveled, and im worried I wont be able to do that this time.

5 - Finally, any overall tips you guys have for someone that not only doesnt mind not discovering shit (I dont mean like locations or story beats, more like the fact that resistance was useless in DS1) but actually prefers to know as much as possible going in to not ruin my characters?

Apreciate the help, and im sure Ill have plenty more questions when the game is actually out (on PC where im playing).

I'm helping FROM gather data on player preference. Maybe someday they will learn that the PVP matchmaking needs to match up TWO players who want PVP, not just one.

Why should your preference take preference over mine? You get to come into my game uninvited to make my game crappy?

They do. You can play offline. By being online you accept the risk of invasions. I always laugh at those babies who disconnect whenever they die by an invader myself but I can see how it could become annoying, especially with limited consumables to invade.

20 & 30, then 40 & 50, basically.

2 - Was there ever a consensus on Adaptability? is it needed, is it useless, what is it?

Not useless but ymmv. I thought the jump even from 19 to 20 was noticeable but I could be imagining things - and that's pretty much ADP in a nutshell.

Just my opinion, belows.

From what I can tell, it really varies per stat. END, from what I've seen and experienced, really starts to diminish at 20. But INT and FTH, seem to cap out around 40. Anyone magic folks care to elaborate if I'm incorrect?

2 - Was there ever a consensus on Adaptability? is it needed, is it useless, what is it?

I never really put much into ADP, mainly because I'm a STR/DEX focused character. Speed and agility aren't super important to me as I'm two-hand smashing things in the face with my enormous club.

3 - Do mage spells look more...flashy compared to Demons and Dark? I remember early trailers (yes, "those" trailers) mage spells looked way better and more like...you know, powerful mage spells and not tiny little balls of light.
Depends on the spell, really. Some low level ones are totally underwhelming, while some more powerful ones bring out the fireworks. Gotta admit that after hearing about how awesome and powerful Flame Swathe was, the animation for it was pretty boring. :(

4 - Did the enemy respawns eventually stopping ended up being as scary as it sounded initially? I finished Dark Souls twice, but Im not the best at it, and both times I was probably grossly overleveled, and im worried I wont be able to do that this time.

I never found them scary. Granted, I just completed my second playthrough and I'm at like SL 155, so I don't consider myself overly powered. I honestly never found myself in an area where I had killed or died to enough enemies to make them permanently disappear. In my opinion, it's mostly an issue for folks that are trying to farm items.

5 - Finally, any overall tips you guys have for someone that not only doesnt mind not discovering shit (I dont mean like locations or story beats, more like the fact that resistance was useless in DS1) but actually prefers to know as much as possible going in to not ruin my characters?

Biggest tip: when you come across a certain character mulling about with a giant sword, remember that you need some key items before you can make that fight do-able. I didn't know this and wasted hours on what I thought was an impossible fight. Secondly, no matter your class, invest in some DEX and a good bow, plus some poison arrows when you can get them. They make some of the later game areas a cinch.

Apreciate the help, and im sure Ill have plenty more questions when the game is actually out (on PC where im playing).

Just playing offline doesn't send the correct message. Just being online doesn't indicate acceptance of forced PVP. The matchmaking needs to match up two players who want PVP, not make one a passive participant in the process.

They weren't too bad but you need to take them out asap. They're pretty weak defensively. Just circle around the pillar with your shield up when you first enter.

No idea why I had so much trouble.

Did a respec, removed the crappy DEX stuff and cleaned the floor with Flexile Sentry using ascetic and also Lost Sinner using ascetic as well with Lucatiel in my company. Maybe it was also much harder, because I didn't notice that I was over 50% equip load.

Flexile took 1 additional try, because
one of those fucking ninjas got me again
and Lost Sinner took one additional try as well. Got me off-guard :P

Repairing those breakable life rings makes it even easier. No need to help someone else to go human again. Just repair it for cheap 3000 souls. I didn't use them before, because I thought they would actually break and be gone after that. But nope, 3000 souls and they are almost as new :P

It does in the Souls games, and it's always been that way.

No, it really doesn't. Those games were designed with invasions in mind. You are circumventing the design by disconnecting, and trust me, you aren't sending any "message" to From (beyond hopefully getting yourself banned) and they certainly aren't going to change a core mechanic based on a few babies who pull the plug.
