Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

What is this, Ridley for ants?
2014-04-15_00026dtrlw.jpg

THIS is Ridley.

Most of his size in that pic comes from the Prime games using a wingspan that would be needed to realistically carry him. He's usually got tiny wings by comparison in the handhelds so that his wings alone don't take up the entire screen. He'd probably use itty bitty baby wings if he were a fighter, but... then how would he fly around?

Give Ridley heels to compensate for his smaller wings.

It's science team. Are you surprised?

I don't see your problem with Ridley not being the leader when he's literally never been the highest ranking leader of the space pirates in a single Metroid game so far.

You also forgot how in Prime 3 he targets Samus multiple times in the middle of a larger aerial battle. Then he intercepts her when she tries to activate the last power source for Norion's defense system. But that clearly doesn't show intelligence because... Reasons.
Super treated him more than that. He attacked Ceres by himself and stole the infant metroid and took it back to his room. His room had monitors outside it. It was a command center.

I didn't say he wasn't intelligent in the Prime games. The issue was with his relationship to the pirates. That datalog treats him like he's just some bioweapon and probably lead to a misconception that he wasn't intelligent. Being leader and commanding the pirates requires a bit more.

I have a weird feeling that Onett will be on Wii U; New Porky City will be on 3DS in term of their console release. (SNES and GBA)

We haven't seen any larges in the 3ds version yet though...

Only if they are available in "paint the town red" and "friend zoned by my gay best friend magenta"

They command him in Prime because they rebuilt him. Kinda hard to command your own creators.

In Prime 3, he's Dark Samus's bitch like all the pirates.

Nah nah nah. You're going to upset Riki man.

Has to be Riki ;p

Reyn and Fiora can be assist trophies or stage backgrounds.
I was thinking Melia, myself. A mage who has to explicitly call forth her attacks before shooting them out, stacking them up to three at a time (last in, first out), could be interesting - choose whether to summon one quickly and shoot it back out just as quickly, or summon three in a relatively safe spot and then shoot all three out back-to-back. Plus, the game could use more mages than just Zelda.

Riki would be a fine choice too, if only because he's the least humanoid of the cast, which in and of itself opens up interesting fighting styles. But if I only had to choose one that isn't Shulk, I'd probably give it to "Bird Lady" Melia.

(Personally I like Dunban the best, but he's yet another swordfighter, really. Wouldn't bring much to the table, other than to regale to you how he was BORN IN A WORLD OF STRIFE, AGAINST THE ODDS, [HE CHOOSES] TO FIGHT, BLOSSOM DANCE)

Oh for an in-game Ridley with character.
Yes, why can't Ridley talk in game. Clearly what we need is a Metroid game where the 30 foot-long dragon opens its mouth for dialogue. Perhaps he can give a speech while he puts Samus in an elaborate deathtrap she can only escape through a quick-time event.

Put some makeup on Shulk and he can basically pull off Fiora. It can be an alt costume.

But fiora
Basically turns into KOS-MOS, and therefore, deserves to playable, at the risk of spoilers, but hey, shiek is in and I didnt know who shiek was until melee.

What on earth are you talking about?

Why are you jumping to the complete opposite end of the spectrum? we all know ridley is suppose to be a extremely intelligent creature, he has yet to show this in the games, this should be shown.

Metroid is not the kind of series for manga Ridley.

You show it through subtle touches like having Ridley appear in the captain's seat.

The last thing I want in Metroid is to have Ridley talk to Samus.

If anyone sees any changes OR details I have missed putting into the Moveset/Mechanics change list, don't hesitate to let me know.

I want to add as much as possible between now and release. Still can't believe we could be only 3 months away.

Alright, after Ganondorf, Andy, and Isaac, I gotta get one last one out of my system.

Takamaru

AU6RMvX.png

I'm approaching Takamaru like Sakurai did Pit. I thought his take on Kid Icarus was genius, treating Pit like a character in a series that already had decades of entries with all the refinement and advancement that come with a long-standing classic franchise. Similarly, I've based Takamaru on my ideas for a Murasame reboot, but you won't need the details of that to appreciate Takamaru's unique gameplay style.

Stances

mTtZiyrl.jpg

Takamaru's fighting style revolves around stances, which are loosely based on real Japanese sword-fighting stances. (I'm not an expert in these, so please excuse any mistreatment of the source material!) Every one of Takamaru's specials causes him to enter a different stance. These affect his movement and change his normals, sometimes drastically. Stances can have different transition times (i.e. how long it takes to enter the stance), and some stance-specific normals will transition into others stances.

Does this mean Takamaru has no "regular" specials?

Yes! Takamaru can only attack through his normals. He is all about entering the correct stances based on the context to execute the appropriate normals, some of which are as dynamic mechanically as a regular special. Since detailing a bunch of normals explicitly is obviously not practical, I'll only explain at a high level what each stance entails along with examples of attacks.

Default Stance: Chūdan-no-kamae

kVigICM.jpg

(Stance on the right.)

This is the "normal" stance, which can usually be re-entered from any other stance by pressing the current stance's respective input. Allows Takamaru to execute basic normals like you would expect from most other fighters. This is the most flexible stance, and also the only stance from which Takamaru can use a smash attack.

Neutral Special: Ko Gasumi

PWlMVL8.jpg

Allows the player to stand their ground or blend into other stances. A neutral-normal might be a rapid series of stabbing cuts, while a side normal could be a long-range super-stab that moves Takamaru forward in the thrust. Up-normal sweeps a target in front of Takamaru up in the air at a diagonal angle, which Takamaru can follow to spike at the apex of the arc. (Note that moves like the last one can double as a form of recovery.)

Down Special: Iai

TizAOon.jpg

Takamaru sheathes his sword, taking a while to enter the stance. While in the stance, he cannot jump and his movement is limited. However, his next attack will be devastating and often smoothly bleed into other stances for followup attacks. Useful for opening attacks.

Examples of attacks include its up-normal, which sends him into the air immediately above him before performing an AOE of slashes around him, transitioning into Hassō-no-kamae. Side-normal teleports Takamaru far in the tilt direction, cutting anything in its path and sending enemies flying toward Takamaru in his Ko Gasumi stance.

Side Special: Jōdan-no-kamae

DI5u5dZ.jpg

Takamaru starts rushing forward, moving much faster than he normally can. He must always run forward while in this stance.

Neutral-normals will slash the space in front of him, pushing the enemy back (and in position for another neutral-normal). Up-normal will send Takamaru in a diagonal upward slash. Back-normal will cause Takamaru to stop and pivot, attacking with great force behind him before shifting to Hassō-no-kamae.

Up Special: Hassō-no-kamae

Ah42RZp.jpg

An offensive AOE stance that allows Takamaru to make wide, sweeping slashes (and even fire projectiles by cutting the air in front of him!).

Neutral-normals give Takamaru wide, arcing slashes with great range. Side-normals fire light air cuts, while up-normal sends similar projectiles at an upward angle. Down-normal executes a wide, slow, but highly damaging ground sweep before entering Iai stance.

-----

I know that's all probably hard to envision and is not terribly descriptive, but I think it communicates how Takamaru could be implemented as a truly unique fighter. He doesn't need to be just another swordsman with a counter, a charged slash, an upward cut/recovery, etc.

Glad I got those out of my system! Here's to the next reveal!

Dunban would have been my choice if there weren't many sword users already being in this game. I was thinking Melia would be an awesome choice for the exact same reasoning. She's only
half homs too.

But fiora

I wouldn't mind if they did put her in, but since it's a recent game I would like to think that they would want to avoid any plot spoilers.

Do the spoilers have anything to do with mechanics, or is this more power level plot contrivance stuff
It's incredibly crucial to the story and especially the ending since *read the following spoilers at your own risk*
The monado is basically a god's sword that allows it's wielder to essentially alter the fabric of the universe and thus do stuff like control the flow of fate and recreate the entire universe. While it's used as a weapon, it really can do pretty much anything if you have sufficient control over it

So you choose to be close-minded.
Not even Other M was stupid enough to have Ridley talk.

I'm fine with him roaring to command space pirates or something. Spoken English? Yeah, no thanks.

Well, we already had human characters talk to each other in Other M, so you can tell how it would work out if they added dialogue for one of Samus' most fierce enemies.
"I am space acid. I am death".
Ugh.

All I was lookin for was character, not necessarily dialog. The games have mostly made him seem like a monster, it'd be neat for him to be more actively intelligent, scheming, plotting, even if it's conveyed without him saying anything.

That said, it'd be fun to have him say things, too. But he'd have to be the primary antagonist in that game, can't have just random Ridley dialog in a less prominent role. And you gotta introduce it intelligently, have him slither out just a couple words while coming out of the darkness, break it slowly, give a real "oh shit he's talkin" scene early on. It could be sweet.

Other M's Samus wasn't THAT out of line with her little freakout.

Going by the inscenation it was spot-on. Going by the story...she DID overcome her fear in the manga, but freaking out again upon seeing the creature she already had killed in Zero Mission ("aka" manga)AND Super Metroid (how did that work btw?) is an understandable reaction imo.

Whenever I see Ridley discussions, post these I must.

I don't know if Sakurai has Photoshop, though. So we may not get him.
That's a really big character. Bowser barely fits as it is.

Ugh.
I'd be okay with it if they got Gilbert Gotfried, who I always imagine in my head when reading the manga.

I agree with this. Only problem with Melia is her VA is too big... of a star now, that I don't think Nintendo would reuse her which is a shame. But if I had to choose, I'd forego having the same VA for her to be in the game. Same thing kind of goes with Riki, I'd hate to hear someone else voice him, but if they had to to get in the game, I'd be all for it.

I'd not have a problem with him being shown as intelligent with no dialogue. Other M actually got this right.

Manga chatterbox Ridley is not something I'd enjoy.

Yeah, I understand. I don't think Smash is the place for that, though. That said, Zero Mission did all of that, not only with the command center cutscene, but also the construction of robot Ridley.

It could work, but it would have to be really well done. And I don't think Metroid is very suitable for dialogue, even if it's the villain taunting the heroine.
It would have to be something like SHODAN in System Shock 2. Man, that game is just awesome.

Well, I think that freakout was intensified by really thinking he was gone forever, and perhaps the realization that this monster that was popping up throughout the game was RIDLEY of all things. It's not like she totally shut down for good though, she bucked up and blew the everloving crap out of him right afterwards.

I'd not have a problem with him being shown as intelligent with no dialogue. Other M actually got this right.

Manga chatterbox Ridley is not something I'd enjoy.

I wouldn't portray him exactly like the manga version of him in a game, he's definitely way to chattery there. But something a bit more restrained, maybe even Smaug-esque? I could get on board with that, if the overall tone of the game was designed to match. I certainly wouldn't just drop talking Ridley into any of the existing Metroid games as-is.

Yeah, I understand. I don't think Smash is the place for that, though.

Oh, well sure. I wasn't really talking about any SSB appearance.

I bet he lost because he wasn't authorized to use his full powers.

My point was that that poster's point was BS because he's shown intelligence in all of his games, especially Zero Mission and Super. I didn't even mention the manga. There's no misinterpreting this cutscene:

He's shown it. And maybe he does talk in the games. The Space Pirates talk in the Prime games but you can't understand a word they're saying.

I wish Main Street from New Leaf was a 3DS stage.

It could of been Onett. Don't get me wrong, I like the Tortimer Island but always wanted Main Street.

That isn't much better, frankly.

No she didn't. Other M is the only game where Samus doesn't defeat Ridley. The Omega Metroid beats Ridley. Ridley would have beaten Samus if Anthony hadn't saved her. Samus doesn't do anything at all in Other M except get shot, allowing the worlds greatest military mind to save the universe.
