GOG News and Updates 2014

lol I'm not familiar with this phrase!

Think games where things aren't necessarily straightforward, and there's more ways to lose / die than to win. Not casual friendly, plenty of bugs due to the scope of the game, and generally somewhat difficult to play well until you've invested a decent amount of time learning the game's systems. There's usually a high payoff when everything does click, because typical AAA games don't tend to deliver a similar experience.

Don't forget the awful animation!

But yeah, I'd classify it as being too ambitious for your budget. Or at least focusing on complex systems and mechanics at the expense of general polish and simplicity. Risen is my favorite recent game I'd call eurojank.

I dunno, wasn't Divinity II supposed to be really good once the Dragon Knight expansion came out? It's certainly more polished than say, Gothic. Just one glance at gameplay footage confirms that.

Though I did have a weird problem with the Developers Cut where the game didn't seem to run smoothly... kind of like the animation was locked at 30fps. Maybe it's just an oddity of Gamebryo.

ANYWAY:

Yeah, I voted for it anyway, because that means Divine Divinity will be cheap. I am playing through DD again for the first time in a decade, and I've put probably 20 hours into it since Monday. It is still, without a doubt, my favorite CRPG ever, and one of my favorite games, period. It's basically Diablo combat + Ultima Exploration. In other words, it's an RPG that's easy to pick up, but that has a surprising amount of depth. I've explored every corner of the world map, just because I wanted to see what was there, and because it was fun to stumble upon new quests/hidden places.

The visuals still look fantastic, especially since the game supports higher resolutions and widescreen, and the soundtrack is sublime. The game is very effective at creating a palpable atmosphere, and that's one of the biggest factors that makes the game more enjoyable than other Diablo-style games (including Diablo, itself) for me.

I'm excited for Original Sin, but man... if they actually surpass DD with it, I am going to freak the fuck out.

(oh, and Beyond Divinity sucks. Catastropic disappointment.)

Oh yeah, I forgot that I bought Caesar III last night. Never actually played one of these games (thought they looked boring as shit back when they were coming out), but I'm curious. I mean, I adore Rollercoaster Tycoon, so this is probably something I'd dig, right?

Maybe I'll check it out after I finish Divine Divinity.

Caesar III is awesome, man. It's definitely not boring. You have to spin lots of plates. Keep citizens happy, keep Caesar happy, keep the gods happy, ensure enough food is being produced, etc.

I started it up, just to see how it looked visually, and it passed muster. It's old, but it looks fine. And the single bit of music I heard was good, so that's a positive sign.

Just seems like if you're gonna play a game like that, especially for an extended period, the aesthetics have to be pleasant.

But yeah, it sounds like the game is exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for. I thought about nabbing the Cleopatra and Zeus games, too, but I figured I give this one a shot first, see how I feel about it, and then proceed.

I will buy the hell out of DD.

I will buy the hell out of DD.

As it turns out, I just finished playing through the game. I did close to every quest this time around, and killed almost every enemy in the game (the game has a set number of enemies in the world, and they don't respawn.) So, my dude was beefed up by the time I got to the end. My stats, in the room before the very end (just a link, for those who don't want to see what's up):

It was every bit as good as I remember, from start to finish. And holy shit, that soundtrack. It's worth buying the game for that, alone.

Point is, the game is going to be $1.49 tomorrow. A buck forty nine! I've bought food from Taco Bell that cost more than that, and it was shit.

Even cooler would be if people played the game after buying it.

Up today: Adventures. On one side, Wadjet Eye (Blackwell collection, Gemini Rue, Resonance). On the other, Jane Jensen (Gabriel Knight 1-3).

Good though Wadjet Eye's games are, I think the power of the name of GK will win here.

Well, GK1 is the best thing Sierra did, and GK2 is pretty much the best FMV game ever made...

Under a Killing Moon/The Pandora Directive exist tho!

I'm voting for Wadjet Eye because they're the best company in modern adventure games. ..even though the first two Gabriel Knight games are probably better.

And this is where I'm showing my new status to PC gaming. I've not heard of any of these latest offerings for the past few days. Once Caesar III and co passed, the entire bundles since then I'm completely oblivious to.

What's that crime noire looking set of games on the left for tomorrow, that's currently losing?

Wadjet Eye, a modern publisher of classic-style point-and-click adventures.

The Blackwell bundle is a series of supernatural-noir adventures, featuring a psychic and her ghost partner helping distressed spirits move on. They're very good, and the final game in the series is very nearly out.

Gemini Rue is a cyberpunky-style mystery game; Resonance is a scientific thriller. I've not played either yet, but they've been well-recieved.

Some releases happened while I wasn't looking; The Last Federation and The Samaritan Paradox. I know nothing about them.

It's been quite a big week for new titles on Gog, hasn't it?

Weekend sale is 60% off EA stuff.

For the $3.88 I spent on both games, I'm quite happy

Like almost all great RPGs, they are among the best at certain things and fall flat with others. If you can stomach some fairly boring combat in DD and severely limited exploration in D2, as well as some general rough edges, they are amazing experiences overall.

Skip Beyond Divinity though.

This post warms my heart.

why is Beyond divinity so bad? and will I miss something story wise if I skip that game?

You won't miss anything. Even Divinity 2 mostly has references to DD rather than being a direct sequel.

Beyond is just boring and unambitous. It is a straight dungeon crawler, and not an exceptional one in any sense. The others are very story-driven RPGs with large casts of supporting characters.

I see, I guess I'll get those 2 then, thanks

edit: and I just bought them. Are there any other sale recommendations in the site? I haven't been following gog closely

Just fyi, I am working on keeping a comprehensive list of the games that are recommended by members here, it's linked in the OP, but I'm sure people miss it there (who reads OPs anyway, right?). So there's this too. Still in its infancy though, only a small-medium portion of GOG's library has been filtered through.

It was made on a shoestring budget in a short time so Larian could build up the cash to hire people back for Divinity 2. Admirable goals, but the end result is not worth playing.

BD still stings, man. Incredibly tedious, all-around. I slogged through just about the entire game, and stopped right before the end. I just couldn't take it anymore.

Thanks to this thread I'm also picking up Devine Divinity and Divinity 2 (Will skip Beyond)

What the hell are those Gothic games in the loser section?

Alright guys, here's my current cart:

Divine Divinity (GOG royalty)
Syndicate Plus (requisite tactical-action title)
Wing Commander 1+2 (dogfight space-sim)
Legend of Kyrandia: Hand of Fate (apparently the best Westwood adventure)

This is a bit over 8-and-a-half USD, but I wanna add one more EA deal. Do I go with Strike Commander (want to get the full 2D (art, at least) Origin dogfight package) or Populous II (going to want a god game eventually)? They're evenly matched, but it'd be easier to play Populous than SC due to my lack of a flight stick (gonna have to deal without one for WC).

Realm of the Haunting exists

So guys, what's your haul for the past week?

I have racked up:

Heroes of Might and Magic
Heroes of Might and Magic II
Heroes of Might and Magic III
The Witcher: Enhanced Edition
The Witcher 2: The Assassins of Kings: Enhanced Edition
Caesar III
Pharaoh & Cleopatra
Zeus & Poseidon
Empire Earth
Divine Divinity
Divinity II

Hmm... oddly tempted to finally give Divinity II a shot. Weird that I never actually played the thing before now. I did just buy Shadowrun Returns, so I wanna run through that first, but maybe I'll finally give Divinity II a chance after that.

Just the first part, though. Not sure I have it in me to run through that, and the apparently quite massive expansion all in one go.

I've never played any of the gothic games. Which is the best one to pick up?

Risen 1 is easier / prettier but Gothic 2 w/ expansion is better, but more cumbersome. Risen's still pretty amazing though. Gothic 2 is a continuation of Gothic 1 too, so depending on how big a hole you want to dig, you may just want to start with Risen and look ahead to Risen 3... if you're feeling ambitious you could start with Gothic 1, which doesn't look that much worse than Gothic 2 really, I suppose. Risen 2, Gothic 3 and 4 can all be put aside until those three are finished I'd say.

Hmm... Ultima series sale. I read on the GoG forum that the first three games can be finished in a few days. I've toyed with every game in the series... Perhaps with the original manuals on GOG and some FAQs I could actually complete them quickly? Is there anybody who has finished these games in the last ten years who could clear this up?

I completed the EGA version of Ultima 1 when I was quite young in a couple of weeks, IIRC. Ultima 2 and 3.... were beyond my graphical tolerance, I'm sorry to say. And my graphical tolerance is *high*. That said, it's got even higher, so they might be worth a revisit these days.

I'm given to understand that 2 is a bit of a mess, to be honest, with masses of content that's pretty irrelevant to the main story (but the game's old enough that there aren't really interesting side-stories to accomodate that, it's just Stuff To Do). 3 fares somewhat better.

Also, when I went through the Ultima's for the recommended list, the ones that made the cut were 4,5,6,7 and Ultima Underworld 1 and 2. So if someone wants to narrow their experience down a little, those are the highest regarded entries.

Yeah I picked up Gothic 2 gold. Its on sale so if its good I'll plow through the rest of the games you mentioned. Once my finals are over I'll have plenty of time to play. Cheers for the advice.
