Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

Xerneas was never asked by anyone anywhere to be a character in the game. He doesn't have anywhere near the level of expectation of the ATs, let alone Ridley. And the ATs were explicitly ruled out as playable upon being posted. 100% clear. Which is why, again, the ambiguity with Ridley raises the question of various possibilities.

What does popularity have to do with the factual evidence you presented being faulty? Or, more importantly, why does it factor into the equation at all? Ambiguity is ambiguity, irrespective of popularity.

This is textbook goalpost moving.

I'd still maintain that two ridley boss fights isn't really the same as two incredibly different versions of ridley with very different scale (Which would be pretty necessary for a playable character)

And this is still based on Sakurai really having a good feel for who western gamers want in smash in the first place

I only presented facts. Sorry you don't like them, but calling them "faulty" doesn't magically make them so.

Honestly I'm not even convinced Sakurai even really has a good understanding of the western fanbases desire for Ridley. He can't speak English, so it's likely any knowledge of western requests comes secondhand from god knows what source if any. And even if he did know, I don't think Sakurai really cares all that much about what characters the fans want as opposed to what characters he thinks will work well and deserve a spot
I disagree I think Sakurai pays close attention to what fans want. I think the difference is he knows fans also like surprises and a big thing that attracted people to Smash is sometimes the unique oddball ideas. Rosalina and Greninja are fan favorites that not a lot of people expected to make it into smash but people seem to be pretty happy with the decision. Id say the biggest and probably most universally agreed upon(Japan and western audience) requests for Smash are Palutena, Chrom/Lucina and Mewtwo and Id say they will likely make it in.

Let's just hope we don't have to see this thing:

Saying that Sakurai not explicitly stating Ridley to not be playable is a fact, but it's also not evidence for him. What I see is people trying to create patterns where no patterns really exist. If you can use the "well Sakurai likes to fake people out" arguement, then please prepare an actual counter to the "He never fakes people out without telling the truth immediately afterwards" counter arguement.

Sakurai would've decided on Greninja in Smash long before anyone outside of Nintendo even saw him. Smash roster was said to have been finalized in an interview a while before X and Y came out

All of this is moot given he didn't actually show Ridley in the first place.

The bosses have different models, move sets, and AI.

Pffffffffffff yeah keep believing that

Clearly the boss in pyrosphere was some other, completely unrelated character. I don't see how him directly showing ridley or not is really relevant given that it's entirely obvious to everyone that that was Ridley on pyrosphere when he was mentioning other boss characters appearing

I'm not sure I believe that. I think he's in touch with the Japanese fanbase, but getting in touch with a fanbase in a language you can't speak is always going to muddle things up

Pokemon choices are decided by Gamefreak, not Sakurai.

I never noticed that Ridley-X looks like a xenomorph. Reminds me of the drooling enemies close to his area.

Wasn't there an interview about Melee where Sakurai talked about getting fanmail from the US? About how that fan was thanking Sakurai for putting Roy in Melee?

Fanmail would either have been translated or could have possibly been by an American who could actually write the letter in Japanese. And I really don't think Sakurai reads anything close to all the fanmail he recieves

He didn't even name, let alone show, the character in question -- he only insinuated one of multiple possible Ridleys (all different designs and characters, mind you, like the two you forgot he put in Brawl). It's not comparable to, say, Waluigi or Ashley where he showed -and- named the character, following which he clarified. Here, he does no such thing. All we're left with is your assumption that Sakurai will pick one Ridley this time and make it a stage hazard, or the possibility he may use different Ridleys in different ways -- including the possibility of making one Ridley playable.

And that's really what this has always been about: possibilities, and you saying there are no other possibilities, while others are open-minded/imaginative enough to see how Sakurai could pull a fast one if he so desired.

Except you still haven't given me an example of where Sakurai pulled a fakeout without immediately being honest about it. The fact that he didn't say it was Ridley is irrelevant since he clearly expected people to know who he was talking about. I see nothing to actually suggest Ridley will be playable. I do however see evidence that he is a stage hazard, which would make it less likely a playable version will be in the game

It's heartening to see that there are young, innocent people on this thread who believe that Sakurai is a just nice man who makes a fun video game, when us jaded vets know what Sakurai truly is: a master troll who knows exactly what he did when he showed Ridley's shadow.

The real plot twist is that Sakurai is pulling the ultimate troll by making you troll yourself

"Less likely" -- certainly. That's my feeling. Glad to see you acknowledge how Sakurai could still pull a fast one.

I also already addressed your first point: Not naming Ridley is relevant since all past precedent had the character named, and not just that -- they were actually shown.

Sakurai is Nintendo's Kojima. And now I'm suddenly getting flashbacks to "Vulcan Raven's" shadow in the MGS2 trailer.

Fusion is probably the Metroid that most strongly rips off the Alien franchise next to Other M. Samus becoming part metroid and fighting an outbreak of aliens on board a genetic research ship being run by your employer. Straight up Alien Resurrection.

Space pirates in general are very xenomorphesque. Fusion had these guys:

Probably inspired by that scene in Resurrection with the underwater xenomorphs.

That doesn't disprove anything else I said in my post. Also we have no idea how the roster making process works. Maybe all he had written down was Pokemon from X/Y when he came up with the roster and then after the game came out he narrowed down which character they would use.

Dour-checked, and I got Gamefreak and the Pokemon company confused again. It's also much less straightforward than that; the Pokemon Company give him the options to choose from.

Thanks.

Seems like the final decision is still Sakurai's but he works with the Pokemon Company to finalize that decision. Nice. One thing I'm excited for is the Iwata Asks for Smash 3DS/U. I want to know what Sakurai's thought process was like during the making of the games.

Kirby (Right Back at Ya!)
Lots of straight forward changes/additions.

Kirby's Jabs

Yea, that's it. It looks like Kirby tries to do an uppercut lol.

Kirby's New Side Special

The Hammer Flip. You can charge it and take damage from it if you charge it too much which is similar to Dedede's Jet Hammer.

I'm guessing you can no longer do the double swing from Brawl when used in the air. I wonder if it can be used to deflect projectiles or at least clash with them. That is one thing I found odd in Brawl.

And Ryce pointed out that this move was probably planned for Brawl since there is an unused animation:
isAsXwQqTldoS.gif

Kirby's New Final Smash

The Ultra Sword. It is much cooler and better than whatever the hell Kirby was doing in Brawl lol. The Ultra Sword is the most prominent super ability in Kirby's Return to Dreamland and the regular sword ability is probably the most iconic one for Kirby. It really is fitting for Kirby to have this final smash.
It's nice to know sakurai didnt completely get rid of kirby's neutral A

Thanks.

That's assuming we get one. We never got one for tropical freeze which is incredibly disappointing since I really wanted to hear another one from Retro studios.

I know this is a funny narrative.

But I find there are a lot more casual people who know about samus than you think.

They have fuck all idea what anything zelda related is though
Uh, no, Metroid is infinitely more obscure in the mainstream than Zelda. It's not even close.

Thanks.

We haven't had an Iwata Asks in a while.

He's probably keeping his head down and doesn't want to be seen as fiddling while Rome burns.

I don't like how he lost a finger going Mecha
That's accurate to his Prime appearance. Meta Ridley otherwise has some huge differences from Prime; his half-organic head is completely different from the metallic one in Prime.

On a side-note, purple Ridley is the worst thing to be retained from the original Metroid. He wasn't purple in any other Metroid game until Other M, yet because of the Melee intro and Brawl, everyone remembers him as purple.

I didn't realize this. Such a shame but I can see him staying away from the spotlight for a bit, though, I'd find it a bit weird if we don't get one for MK8.
