Play Nintendo - Announcing Nintendo @ E3 2014

TP was a SD game with big scales and Nintendo has never made this kind of title on HD hardware.3D world which is very similar with 3D Land has some framerate problems. I don't know how Nintendo will deal with big AAA games in HD. The first one will be MK8 and it seems to be very beautiful but a big Zelda asks more technical skills.

Are we discounting Wind Waker HD?

After rewatching the Skyward Sword reveal I think maybe audience reactions aren't a reliable or important thing to base your E3 presence on. And I think maybe people are regarding the audience so highly because Nintendo's E3 last year felt like such a flop.

I was harsh on Nintendo's showing last year because they just did a regular Direct - if it wasn't for Iwata's mini-tour at the end of the video and a few mentions (playable on the showfloor) you wouldn't have known it was at e3. They also used uStream and only uStream, resulting in the worst performing stream I think I've ever watched. It was, in retrospect, a really poor showing for them.

In contrast, this time we have a Nintendo "Digital Event" - if we assume that isn't just a rename with no differences, it shows Nintendo recognized the Direct didn't feel very special. And if they're messing with the format, it might be more exciting for people to watch at home. If the announcement video is any indication, it might have more of a sense of humor than the Directs too. That might just be Mega64 though.

What I think is cooler is the Treehouse Live @ E3 videos and Smash Bros. tournament. I think if the interviews and demos are interesting (and of course the Smash Bros tournament will be exciting), people will be keeping an eye on Nintendo for the whole conference, not just for an hour. I mean, if they announced a new Zelda in the initial stream, showed a live demo later that day, and had a couple interviews over the next couple days? The would stay relevant in the fast moving E3 news blur.

I'm gonna stop thinking about this now, because I'm getting hyped way too early.

That's my stance on it as well. The idea for Nintendo to break the mold and turn it into their own no-holds-barred special event is an intriguing prospect, and generally making a bigger effort to provide more than just a traditional press conference at such a big event like E3 is something I hope more of the bigger publishers actually try to do. The last year's Nintendo Direct definitely wasn't that, but if anything the sheer confidence they've taken to announce all these things so far seems to tell me that last year taught them a lot of "don't" lessons.

I don't want to be too hyped just yet but this easily feels like the most confident announcement of a showing Nintendo's ever done, and that alone has me optimistic about what's in store. The Smash announcement alone seems to tell me that Nintendo finally "gets" how much audience goodwill matters, and I'm confident that it's going to serve as a huge hype booster. With EVO around the corner as well, it is amazing to see Nintendo finally take the big steps to increase audience awareness.

Oh boy here we go! Seriously, what makes Glaxy a "truer" 3D Mario than 3D World? There is no law that says what a 3D Mario must be like.

If you like something more, it's a true version of the game in question.

At least to those with backwards logic.

I liked the Galaxy games more than 3D World but 3D World is a real and true and definitive Mario title.

The lack of a conference is disappointing but the video was great and kind of inspired some hope in me that we'll get some good surprises at E3.

I think the biggest problem last year was the press retaliating because they didn't get their ego stroked by having an invite to a press conference. Unless you are one of the few hundred or so who get invites there's no difference between a Direct and a Press conference. Nintendo really needs to have something for the press because they will take it out on them if they don't.
I think the press was partly mad because the actual press event, the hands-on demo, was pretty uncomfortable. Because they didn't set up a stage but still had people speaking, everyone had to crowd around Reggie while he yelled slogans at them. A lot of people just laughed.

Now Keighley, Keighley totally had his feelings hurt by something. He got surprisingly mad about Wii Fit Trainer and called it the biggest faux-pas in E3 history. I think he wanted Nintendo's show simulcast to Spike and GTTV and Nintendo didn't agree (to their detriment). I can't imagine he will be happy about Nintendo streaming developer diaries themselves all day.

I'm lukewarm on the subject a live conference vs recording - I'd slightly prefer a conference, but it could be good as long as they have better streams this time.

However, the Smash Invitational and Best Buy demo are BRILLIANT. I'm more than a little hyped for getting game demos throughout E3, too.

Let's see who can put together the most accurate list of who the 16 participants will be.

There's no indication the 'Digital Event' won't be live/involve some live elements yet. So keep the faith ;)

Sony would be wasting everyone's time showing vr at e3 since it won't be ready Til fall 2015 at the earliest.

I'm confident VR will be there for Sony in some form. They'll let people try it out is my guess. But yeah, they won't be focusing on it at all, it will just be mentioned with some info as part of their presentation. It's not like they are going to show a huge lineup of new VR games. I'm sure that will be next year.

You know what would be pretty hyped in this Direct? A new Advance Wars game for Wiiu/3DS and a playable Advance Wars character in smash!
...
Well... I can still hope for it :(

That video was hilarious. Between this and the Tomadachi commercial, it's like they got Dan Harmon to script their marketing lately. Somehow Nintendo suddenly became the most interesting of the big three, at least form a marketing standpoint.

I have a gut feeling this year's E3 showing will actually be decent. They're against the ropes, and all they've heard is how terrible their past reveals have been (the VGX was a real low point). I don't expect the world, but I think we'll see some genuinely exciting games, and more than one surprise.

I'm stoked.

Yeah, 3D World has framerate problems. Locked 60fps in this age of fluctuating 20-40fps is just terrible.

Are you actually being serious or are you trolling us?

Haven't there been indication that they may move away from the motion controls? One thing is certain and that is there's at least some people out there with a Wii U that don't have a Wiimote and nunchuck, so building a flagship title exclusively for motion controls would be quite a gamble.

There's no way the gamepad won't be the main control scheme. It's possible they might shoehorn motion controls as an alternate control option if it works with the type of game they're making but it'd be phoned in if the game isn't designed around it.

I don't mind a video instead of a live presentation, I just hope they do more with it this year. Less like a regular ND and more like the Tomodachi Life video.

Wait, did Keighly seriously say that about Wii Fit Trainer? I detect massive deposits of salt.

It's beyond obvious that this is going to be a much bigger deal than last year's Nintendo Direct. They are actually building hype, having fun and are planning some big reveals. They will be able to make the most of being the underdog off to the side, making noise and reminding everyone that they are still very much relevant. Which is exactly what they need to be doing.

So what the hell is X?

what I'm not happy about is that GAF, that is made by consumers and users, is (not entirerly) mad about the lack of press conf because of the media coverage outrage.
while we should be focusd on our experience. our experience could be as good as a live conf or even better with a recorder video, because of contents and because of estethic of the video itself (is easier to create something better for us to watch with a recorded video than with a live conf)

I generally understand that Nintendo likes to control their image, and the digital shows are a good way of doing that, and more importantly ensuring a high quality production.

But what I don't get is, why is this restricted to being shown on streaming media? (forgive my ignorance if this is incorrect, i'll thankfully be corrected).

Why can't they get Spike All Access to also air the show during E3. Or do TV ads showing people when and where they can watch the digital show.

They are BACK!

You'd think having Reggie come to your awards show and confirm fucking Cranky Kong would be enough, but nooooooo

You might be onto something as he does look quite depressed here:

That's a great point. Last year I think the problem was, at least from my viewpoint, it's that Nintendo didn't bother to build much hype. It seems like they are this year. I'm excited whereas last year I wasn't so much.

No, because their players get them ad revenue while embedding someone else's player in to an already designed E3 layout is a great way to fuck it up. In a period of heavy traffic there's literally very little positives for them, especially when they could easily schedule in a live demo for a game and actually make ad revenue from their video player and have everything look and work perfectly. Nintendo is giving IGN, GT, and GS reasons to not give them coverage for their E3 stream unless they give them the ability to stream it from their own players.

They'll still get ad revenue from having an article linking to the nintendo direct, albeit less than if people watched from their players but it still gets ninty coverage from those sites.

The fact is Nintendo is late on HD development.
Mario 3dw is a pretty good game but not enough impressive. It came from 3DS game.
DKTF is marvelous but it remains a 2.5D game.
Pikmin 3 was a gamecube game or wii game before. And we can feel it.
Zelda ww hd is just a simple remake of a game which was released in 2003.
Don't be so fanatics. Remove your blinkers please.
What is the U game which can be a real competitor for ps4 system and xbox systems games?
U needs a Zelda like the E3 graphic demo Zelda. No?

You know what would be pretty hyped in this Direct? A new Advance Wars game for Wiiu/3DS and a playable Advance Wars character in smash!
...
Well... I can still hope for it :(

They put the GBA game up on the Wii U virtual console so who knows. I wonder what Intelligent Systems are working on...
SMT X FE.

I'd forgotten about that, but he totally did and it was hilarious.

Can't find the exact quote, but here's a GAF post confirming I didn't make it up! http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=64140186&postcount=413

Oh wow. Geoff must love hyperbole to call that one of the biggest mistakes in E3 history.
And in a twist of fate, people adored the Wii Fit Trainer appearing (if the massive amounts of art were anything to go by... lots and lots of art).

Please stop! It would suck if we are not getting Advance Wars characters. I think it's one of few franchise that had a lot of entries but never had any playable character in Smash.

North America, I stand corrected :P

Still, the jelly is strong in this one.

Yeah, I agreed with you there. I wonder why they didn't do same thing for Europe and Japan.

They are BACK!

Yesssssss! Hype is back!

Is there even enough time to drop bombs?

I'm guessing this is our E3 thread this year then, before we start hopping around again.

We already got confirmed:

-Zelda U Reveal (EAD2)
-Zelda Hyrule Warriors (Techmo)
-Smash Bros. U/3DS (Namco/Sakauri)
-X (Monolith)
-Bayonetta 2 (Platinum)
-Yarn Yoshi (hopefully the'll reveal some new info) (Good Feel)

To announce (probable):

-Animal Crossing U (EAD 1) - Plaza finishes end of this year
-Metroid 3DS? (hints from Sakomoto currently signing stuff off)
-Pokemon Fighters/Wii U/ whatever that preview was last autumn/fall (Game Freak)
-EAD 4 has an unknown title after Pikmin 3 (already had delays to release)
-Nintendo's Integrated R&D - Quality of Life Related Materials
-Miyamoto's fabled' New IP' (I have doubts on this appearing )
-Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem (Intelligent Systems)
- Grezzo (Majoras Mask 3D)
-Monster Games?

Never

-EAD1 - Mario Kart 8 just finished
-EAD 5 just completed Wii Fit U, probably too early
-EAD Tokyo New Mario Game/IP (Way too early)
-SDP 1: They finished Tamdocahi Life last year and Game and Wario (Nin US will work on translation)
-Camelot : Just finished Mario Golf 3DS
-HAL (Just finished Kirby Tripe Deluxe)
-Retro (Just finished DK TP) - But do they have another smaller team?
-Alpha Dream - Finished Dream Team last year
-Next level games - Finished Luigi Mansion 2 last year, don't know if they're still working with Ninty

There's more teams but I think they're the main ones

There's already so much to talk about. I'm only expecting 1-2 completely new things to be honest.

Will SMTxFE count as "big" if it's talked about? Will Yarn Yoshi? Will Hyrule Warriors? Will Miyamoto's thing? Will Pokken?

If those end up not counting as the "big" thing, then people will be disappointed.

Nintendo is the only one with the right idea here. They need to keep pushing the Nintendo Direct model even farther.

What do most of us complain about here? Biased or flawed coverage of games, sensationalist stories, or incomplete coverage of niche titles.

Nintendo Direct completely bypasses all journalists and just shows you all the shit directly. I think in the future, they should offer downloadable demos so we can not only watch E3 from our homes, but literally play the games too once or twice.

Journalists are always going to be hostile to this, because it basically makes their E3 coverage obsolete if everyone embraces it. Why listen to someone tell you how good or bad a game looked when you can just watch it completely on your own and make up your own mind?

And yeah, the video was amusing. They seem to be building more hype than last year, and aiming that hype at the core gamer specifically. I'm definitely interested.

Wait, did Keighly seriously say that about Wii Fit Trainer? I detect massive deposits of salt.

I remember first finding out about the Wii Fit Trainer when Keighley mentioned it and I thought it was a joke before the leaked Vine started circulating. When I actually got to see the video though, it felt like Keighley made the actual character sound much worse than it actually ended up being.

I'm not sure what he was expecting but the shit talking he did with his co-host made him look like a tool.

in the source code of their e3 site:

Means absolutely nothing of course, but I thought I'd post it regardless. I'm pretty sure they're going to reveal their new handheld this year and E3 seems like a good venue to do so, but it'll probably be later.

Trolling.

Great video Nintendo! Looking forward to checking this out; and right off the heels of Mario Kart 8's release. Hmm that May 30th release date seems very well-contrived.

where can i see this art?
