Man, there is some wicked backlash here in Washington. I think Gibbs' honeymoon is up. A lot of people are angry that the 'Skins let Antonio Piece, Laveranues Coles, Fred Smoot and Rod Gardner (well, he'll be gone in days) and have replaced them with Lemar Marshall (or Mike Barrow if healthy), Santana Moss, Walt Harris and David Patten respectively. It's looking like Minnesota will take Mike Williams out of the draft, so I have no clue who the 'Skins are going to draft anymore.

I'll take a page from PTi and say that it's looked like the 'Skins have won the Super Bowl on paper in many offseasons past, with people saying they've made great choices and they've never panned out. So maybe now when people think they're making BAD offseason choices, they'll actually pan out in the REAL season.

If both Edwards and Williams are off the board, the Redskins WILL draft Antrell Rolle (or Pac-Man Jones if Rolle is already off the board).

People here in DC love Gibbs... he could set fire to the stadium with the current team inside it and they'd still love him.

You're not watching the news then. Mutiny is brewing.

In a Wednesday morning discussion, Indianapolis team president/general manager Bill Polian apprised the agent for Edgerrin James that the Colts might be unable, for a variety of financial reasons, to make a multi-year contract offer to their star tailback. The bottom line, agent Drew Rosenhaus said, was that James would likely play in 2005 under terms of the one-year "franchise" qualifying offer of $8.08 million, or that the Colts will seek to trade one of the NFL's premier backs.

"Basically, they said that with the stadium, their salary cap situation, they could not make us a proposal beyond the qualifying offer," Rosenhaus said. "And Bill made it pretty clear he would entertain trade offers and, in fact, said he would consider trading 'Edge' for less than a first-round draft choice. I told him that I intended to get the word out about where the Colts stood on this and he encouraged me to do so. I would say this is a pretty significant development."

no fucking waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. that's just insane.

lol, I'd love for the Panthers to offer a 2nd round draft pick if it would be enough to pry Edge (even though I know it woudn't be enough and I know that the Panthers wouldn't do it :P).

Gibbs deserves a year at least. Let him hang himself this season.

Konex: I don't know if he would be fired just for that. It's an NFL thing, not so much a future owner thing, although, Tice is bound to get s***-canned during the 2005 season.

DAMNIT, i hope nolan starts to talk with Tim Rattay!

I think Rattay is the real deal, i don't want Drew Brees (giving away our number one pick? Julian Peterson??? NAHHHH).

The receiver has finally landed.

A week after the free-agent signing period opened and two days after his visit was initially scheduled, Plaxico Burress arrived at Giants Stadium early yesterday evening, according to a Giants spokesman. And it still remained a possibility that, if the price was right, Burress could become a Giant today.

That, however, was hardly a guarantee. The Giants were not pleased that Burress blew off his first scheduled visit on Monday, and some in the organization even questioned whether his flu story was true. A lot was said to be hinging on his meeting with team officials and particularly his dinner with Tom Coughlin and the coaching staff, which took place soon after he arrived at about 6 p.m.

The other key to Burress' future with the Giants was his asking price. He's hoping for a six-year, $30 million deal with a $12 million signing bonus, but the Giants were not planning to approach those numbers. His agent, Michael Harrison, told ESPN.com that Burress would be willing to accept a one-year contract so he could be a free agent again next year "if people are going to low-ball him." It was not clear whether the Giants were willing to go that route. If nothing else, the Giants seem to have all the leverage since Burress hadn't made any other free-agent visits and had none planned.

The only other team that has expressed interest in Burress is the Vikings, but they're also waiting to see if the 27-year-old's price comes down.

A source close to Burress said the price isn't likely to drop, but they were optimistic they could get the Giants to improve on the six-year, $20 million offer they had discussed.

Burress is scheduled to return to his Miami home this morning. If he doesn't eventually sign with the Giants, the team may still pursue a lesser receiver. They are also interested in signing a blocking tight end and possibly another defensive back. But Burress is the last "big money" free agent on their shopping list, according to a team source.

I bet he won't sign.

Giants decide not to make an offer on Plax. Maybe after these last few weeks of cold hard reality, Plax will lessen his demands and the Vikes can take a shot at him.

Me am right.

East Rutherford, NJ - After meeting with free agent Plaxico Burress, the Giants have decided not to pursue the wide receiver.

“The New York Giants are no longer interested in free agent wide receiver Plaxico Burress and have withdrawn their offer,” general manager Ernie Accorsi said.

Burress, who played his first five seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, arrived at Giants Stadium late Wednesday afternoon. He had dinner with members of the team’s coaching staff and front office in Manhattan last night, and returned to the Giants offices this morning. A determination was then made by the team’s decision-makers to go in another direction.

The Giants have added four players since the free agency signing period began last week: linebacker Antonio Pierce (Washington), offensive tackle Kareem McKenzie (Jets), kicker Jay Feely (Atlanta) and quarterback Jim Miller (New England).

Way to let Ike go, now we have no one to fill the #2 slot except maybe Tim Carter after returning from a season ending injury. Brilliant moves Accorsi!

I wonder if the Ravens would be interested in Burress since the demand for him hasn't materialized. While I've heard he's a "me" player, he would complement Derrick Mason nicely. On the other hand, the Ravens already have the "tall and lanky" receiver thing covered with Randy Hymes and Clarence Moore, provided they actually catch the ball.

The Carolina Panthers have agreed to contract terms with Marlon McCree, a free agent safety.

McCree, a four-year veteran, has agreed to a one-year deal with a base salary of $540,000 and a $100,000 signing bonus.

McCree spent the past two seasons with Houston and was with Jacksonville for two seasons before that. He will go into training camp as the top backup for free safety Colin Branch and strong safety Mike Minter.

Finally, the Panthers have depth at Free Safety! With the major needs mostly covered this offseason, it will allow the Panthers to draft the best available talent at the #14 pick instead of a need. Here's hoping Williamson falls to that spot!

BTW, here's some news on Burress and the Vikes, from the ESPN Insider rumor central:

With the Giants out of the picture, Burress will likely turn to the Vikings. ESPN.com has learned that the Vikings have proposed the possibility of a one-year contract, but the 27-year-old wide receiver is believed to be seeking a contract similar to the six-year, $30 million contract and the $12 million signing bonus Muhsin Muhammad got from the Bears.

Me thinks Plax isn't going to be happy with a one-year contract.

Brett Favre is returning to Green Bay for the 2005 season, Packers coach Mike Sherman told The Associated Press.

Sherman said Thursday he had a two-hour conversation with his quarterback on Wednesday night. Favre informed him his wife is doing well in her cancer treatment, so he's planning to play at least one more season, maybe more if his own health holds up.

"It came down to his wife and she's doing well in her recovery," Sherman said. "She wants him to play. He said he's looking forward to playing -- hopefully without any off-the-field situations and 'enjoying the journey."'

All you haterz steel yourselves for another season of Favre ass-kissin. :lol

...a year of Favre's ass-kissin THE TURF!

*zing!*

I just don't understand how we will only have Amani Toomer as an above average WR, and DON'T want Burress. Yeah, he could be a problem in the locker room, but Coughlin's style would easily crush that.

He's a proven playmaker and NO team wants him!? This is ridiculous.

Hah, apparently the Giants offered Burress $24 million over 6 years with an $8 million signing bonus, and he rejected it.

Can't really argue with losing interest if he wanted more than that. He's not Muhammad calibre.

I disagree there. Burress is bigger and 5 years younger. They've put up similar numbers throughout their careers, I think Burress is definately worth the same money that Muhammad is.

Granted, Muhsin got much more money than he deserved, but that's not technically my point.

Hrm, I did not take into account their age. Factor in the fact that Plax also had to compete for balls with Ward and Randle-El and I will agree with you.

I would've really liked to see Burress sign with the Giants and give Eli a nice big target but he's crazy if he thought he was going to get a contract like Mushin Muhammad.

Burress has shown flashes of being a great receiver but he's been limited by injuries the last 2 seasons and his production has dropped accordingly.

On the other hand you've got Muhammad who's coming off a career year. That's going to earn him a ridiculous payday.

Meh, that depends. I mean, Muhammed had a ridiculous year because of what happened wit his team (no running game, only 1 starting wideout, gunslinging quarterback), so they might be "the same" in terms of skill level. But on that same token, I remember watching Plax in the New England game against much smaller and less intimidating corners, and he just got worked. I mean, the guy is big and strong, yet he can't go up and get the ball over a third-strong corner picked off the street? At least Muhammed was able to take advantage of mismatches when he had them. He really reminds me of a guy like Rod Gardner (ok, better than that, but still) - big, strong, fast, just can't perform up to his physical abilities when he's on the field.

Anyone else hear Philly's close to signing the Lions former backup QB Mike McMahon? I always liked McMike. He was much better than Joey and never got an honest fair chance. He actually reminds me of a McNabb JR. only more likely to take off and run.

Ok, the Vikes and Dolphins are both interested in FS Darion Sharper from Green Bay. My guess it they are both using him as leverage in the Donovin Darius trade talks, I really can't imagine either team would want to pay both.

The latest rumor around here is that we'd ship our #7 overall to the Jags in exchange for the Jag's #21 and Darius. I assume that means that the Vikes either aren't that in love with Mike Williams, or we don't think he'll still be there at #7. I think that trade would be great for us, really. It would essentially mean that we traded Moss for Harris, Darius, a 1st and a 7th. That's a damn good deal. Chances are with this Sharper thing, the price for Darius may have gone down.

I really hope we don't overpay Burress, we don't want to turn into the Titans or the 49ers in two years.

Oh yeah, happy trails to Chris Hovan. Rumor has it the Giants and the Browns are interested. Good luck Chris, if the NFL thing doesn't work out for ya, you've always got a career as an extra in Braveheart 2.

Pending passing the physical today Ravens picked up ex-Steeler right guard Keydrick Vincent. We've made some damn good acqs in a short time period... our current receivers were showing sparks of talent... if Mason stays healthy that really opens it up for the recievers(and for Jamal), hopefully he'll come in to training camp fit... Rolle gives us a pretty damn good coverage combination... very nice....

Yeah, they keep putting it up on the news about how they are courting him. He was on the local news about how it would be great to come to Philly.

Eagles sign QB McMahon to a two-year deal

Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA - Free agent quarterback Mike McMahon signed a two-year deal with the Eagles today and will compete with Koy Detmer for the backup role behind Donovan McNabb.

"If something were to happen to Donovan, then I would have the chance to get some playing time," McMahon said. "They expressed confidence in me to go out and win games if I'm on the field."

Detmer has been entrenched as McNabb's backup for the last five seasons and also serves as the holder for Pro Bowl kicker David Akers - a duty taken seriously by the Eagles coaching staff.

McMahon, 26, has thrown for 1,709 yards and 10 touchdowns and 13 interceptions since being selected by the Lions in the fifth round of the 2001 draft. He brings good mobility to the quarterback position, having rushed for 291 yards and four TDs on 48 carries for his career.

McMahon started seven games in his first two seasons with the Lions under then-coach Marty Mornhinweg, who now serves as an assistant for the Eagles. Last season, McMahon appeared in one game, relieving starter Joey Harrington in the third quarter against Indianapolis and completing 11 of 15 passes for 77 yards in a 41-9 loss.

Welp, that wraps that up.

Well it's been a fukken terrible 20 years but that about wraps it up for me as a Lions fan.

It's up to Ravens/Eagles fans to convince me which of these two is more worthy of being followed.

methodman said:
It's ok Lions fans, he might actually play good for you... ahhaahahahhaah... ahhahahahahahhaahhaa

I don't see why he wouldn't. He was at the very least a "good" QB in San Fran, and in Cleveland nobody can play well. Nobody. You could put Peyton Manning on Cleveland and he'd lead the team to about six wins. This past year's Michigan receiving corps could have started in place of Cleveland's, and they'd have put up a hell of a lot more yards and touchdowns.

listen i am the #1 jgar fan probably on the planet. i don't think he was right for OUR team, but he is leaps and bounds better than joey harrington. the problem with jgar are his happy feet. he will have perfect protection, but he is so anxious to get out of the pocket. not only that, but he is very inaccurate when he throws deep. he can actually get the ball downfield TECHNICALLY, but anytime he throws over 25 yards in the air the ball becomes very unpredictable and (mostly) uncatchable. i think he will be very good for the lions. they have a pretty good run game, a decent o-line and some good WR's. that is what jgar needs to excel and i think he will excel in detroit

49ers head coach Mike Nolan reportedly is leaning towards drafting Michigan receiver Braylon Edwards with the first pick in the draft. Unless Aaron Rodgers or Alex Smith impress next week in workouts, Nolan reportedly thinks Edwards is the top player available. The sentiment that both quarterbacks could be a little overrated appears to be gaining steam in the NFL community. Edwards, a senior eligible, would be expected to start right away on the 49ers, probably across from Brandon Lloyd.

p.s. edwards + lloyd + woods + (possibly) boston = good group of receivers!
same here, I would like to see edwards picked at no 1. I'm can't wait for the draft. And I just bought season tickets for this season. OH YEA

Greg Aiello, a spokesman for the NFL commissioner's office, would not confirm or deny a DEA or league investigation.

But he said he doubts any NFL player could escape the league's drug tests. "We think we've got the best program in sports," Aiello said.

Yeah, if those players really took steriods, I think they would've been caught by now. I think this might be one of those things where a large group is being investigated and they're just talking of the Panthers because they're NFL players. Hopefully, the Panthers are cleared of any wrongdoing.
