Hmm, not too sure about the animations, the wall run in particular is visibly locked into a straight line. Gameplay seems to be pretty slow (as has been mentioned a few times) too which is a shame. Hope they speed it up, or at least let your style level dictate your speed.

It looks promising overall though.

This definitely looks a lot better than I thought it would. Hopefully this will lead to more colorful games this generation than all the gritty-gritty-bang-bang stuff happening last gen.

It's like a slower infamous mixed with dead rising. Art style is phenomenal though.

Really hope there's more enemy variety than what's on display here.

Throw a little Ratchet and Clank in there as well. But overall, it's really looking like they have nailed down a truly winning formula that takes place in an incredibly over the top, vibrant and in your face world that is oozing personality. Insomniac may have finally found their mojo again... in a major way.

Loving the way everything looks except the new main character, but I'm guessing there's probably some customization.

I've already stated I love what I'm seeing, but if I were to offer Insomniac a few constructive criticisms, they would be the following.

-wall running animation looks too stiff. The hanging from a line animation looks great because it looks natural, as if gravity is influencing the swing.
-blur trail behind the player grinding rails looks too simple. Perhaps add some color to the blur?

that's the most basic trail vanity amp for a white trail. there are other options you can select with color, etc

I don't know why, but reading this gave me chills.

The animations are the weakest parts but I'm sure those can be improved. Game is months out.

Uncharted reeeally needs it for exempel, just think how nice it would be to remove the worst parts of Uncharted (the cinematic climbing sections) and add a real traversal mechanic like this one. Mmm...

Not quite sure it would be Uncharted at that point :P

Plenty of last generation games focused on movement and traversal, they just don't get talked about as much.

Prince of Persia / Assassins creed / Mirrors edge / Infamous / Brink etc etc etc.

Looks fun! I'm a lot more interested in this title now :)

I did see that there is some sort of MP that hasn't been revealed yet, but full on coop is hopefully one of those things.

The art style is not bad. But the main character makes me feel old. Seems very much aimed at 14 year olds.

just to be clear, there is no "main" character in terms of "look"

YOU are the main character. Pick male / female, and body type. Dress / look how you want (all clothing in the game works regardless of male/female/body type).

For the story, the character is fully voiced both male and female as well

Will need to see more. It looks visually appealing. The game play from what little we can see doesn't look much different than what I have played to death in Prototype, Infamous, and Crackdown. Reading details on the game makes it sound like it will be a different experience than any of those games offered so I am hopeful.

the multiplayer mode IS co-operative. details later

Can you select age in the sense of having an older liking character?

I'm not generally into open world games, so I need to know more about what you actually do in this game. I also get the impression that it might be overly snarky. Visuals are great, though.

Not trying to suck up or anything, but I just wanted to say that this is by far the greatest looking thing you guys have worked on in years. Really was not expecting it to look so hot.

Wait, they're seriously still using the PS2 R&C engine? The one that was just a modified Jak & Daxter engine?

... Really?

no no.

A. The PS2 Ratchet engine WAS NOT a modified Jak and Dax engine. It was our own, and we sometimes traded tips and bits of code with Naughty Dog, but it was our own tech.

B. this is basically a completely different engine, twice removed. A lot of the stuff we built for it was to hit Marcus and Drew's goals for the game in terms of the mass quantities of enemies on screen (it's a lot), the size of the world and the ability to move across it quickly (challenging in open world games) and the sheer number of effects (fireworks, pyro, all that good stuff). Everything we're doing technically is based on nailing the vision of the game, which is exactly as it should be

I'm still pissed off that in a entire gen, Insomniac didn't release anything remotely as fun as what this game seems to be, yet on their first try on a MS platform. BAM.

Goddamn it Insomniac. GODDAMN IT.

Yeah, it looks great. It's a pity that I won't be able to support them. Let's hope they work with Sony again after this does well. After the last three ratchet games, fuse, and R3, I was afraid this would just flop and the old Insomniac would be pronounced well and truly dead. I guess I've waited years for them to return to form, what's another 3 to 4 more to come back to PlayStation?

I hope they say some kind of name in dialog, instead of hey you, or some nick name like overdrive.

I totally get this. It's the thing I hated most about Modnation Racers. I like customization to a point, but I hate thinking my character is just a bunch of thrown together parts. I also don't really have much artistic flair so it ends up being a chore.

I went a little in-depth into this subject of character customisation with a recent post. If a game offers that choice, I'll just settle with the default option, because that's the closest I feel I can get to playing as someone who isn't a blank slate (Commander Shepard for instance). It appears to me that Sunset Overdrive is going for a Saints Row type of deal, where the lead is fully-voiced (by like, 6 different actors in III's case!) and acts the same in cut-scenes regardless of what he/she looks like, but that just doesn't do anything for me.

I guess you just love playing as spiky haired white dudes, huh?

I like playing as characters with interesting personalities, regardless of what they look like. Personality is typically stunted when you start playing around with a character's gender and physical attributes.

More third person shooters need traversal systems like this in place. There's only so long you can you can go with these games having slide to cover as the only other option than shooting your weapon.

It also helps that these guys have made some of the greatest platformers of all time.

Hmm....I actually agree with you (woah).

There's way too many TPS that are grounded and lacking mobility options. As someone who grew up watching a lot of martial arts movies and anime, I would love to see to see more flashy games.

But If you look at the sales of games like Vanquish, it doesn't seem like people want these flashy games...

Um... what? That looks wonderful! Like an interesting / good Infamous infused with Jet Set Radio and those Sega Blue Skies. And I'm a total Insomniac hater. Great stuff.

That looks fun! If the XB1 gets a price drop by the time Quantum Break comes out, I'm gonna grab this as well. Always liked Insomniac. Is there a story to this?
