SO fucking happy to see Spider-Man not doing so hot. That film still makes me angry despite seeing it over a week ago, one of the worst pieces of dogshit I have seen in recent memory. A movie that fails on every single level. How anyone put their names to this film I have no idea, they should all be fucking ashamed.

Oh, yep. They got fucked. Why would they agree to this?

Because it came full circle.
Sony got the sweet deal on Spidey because Marvel were on their knees in the late 90's and then in an ironic turn of evens, the past 5 years have been rough for Sony and they needed to tighten up their spending.
This merch/producers deal was a real help in the short term, but in the long term there's no way it can work. Sony will basically be spending $100mil every two years for Marvel to cash in on. Quite insane.

urgh, not a good drop of Spiderman at all, and can't say I'm personally happy to see Neighbours at number 1 - hated that movie.

The problem has nothing to do with Spiderman or a Spiderman fatigue. It has everything to do with the direction they took with Amazing Spiderman. The first movie wasn't very good and a lot of people didn't connect with Garfield's portrayal

Wiki article on Hollywood Accounting. Its facsinating, as always. I was praying for Peter Jackson not to settle in his recent case, this shit needs to be exposed. But the studios always settle so no one can see their books.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_accounting

Edit:
The 2002 film My Big Fat Greek Wedding was considered hugely successful for an independent film, yet according to the studio, the film lost money.[12] Accordingly, the cast (with the exception of Nia Vardalos who had a separate deal) sued the studio for their part of the profits. The original producers of the film have sued Gold Circle Films due to Hollywood accounting practices because the studio has claimed the film, which cost less than $6 million to make and made over $350 million at the box office, lost $20 million

Haha oh man. When the actors got told it lost money....oh man I would've loved to hear that conversation.

Peter Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings, and his studio Wingnut Films, brought a lawsuit against New Line Cinema after "an audit... on part of the income of The Fellowship of the Ring". Jackson stated this is regarding "certain accounting practices", which may be a reference to Hollywood accounting. In response, New Line stated that their rights to a film of The Hobbit were time-limited, and since Jackson would not work with them again until the suit was settled, he would not be asked to direct The Hobbit, as had been anticipated.[15] Fifteen actors are suing New Line Cinema, claiming that they have never received their 5% of revenue from merchandise sold in relation to the movie, which contains their likeness.[16] Similarly, the Tolkien estate sued New Line, claiming that their contract entitled them to 7.5% of the gross receipts of the $6 billion hit.[17] Overall according to New Line's accounts the trilogy made "horrendous losses" and no profit at all.[18]

Neighbor's trailer honestly does not do the movie justice. That airbag gag worked hysterically in the movie and really was the only major gag in the trailer. There's much more. I'm glad I caught it in theaters with a pack crowd all laughing out loud together, but maybe that's just me.

Nah, I think it's Spider-Man fatigue. I don't think a reboot straight into an origin story was a good idea. It was just uninteresting. Now that Sony has announced the annualization of the franchise, it'll be interesting to see how things play out.

The quality may also be a factor, but it's not like bad movies can't make a shit ton of money too.

There is definite Spider-Man fatigue out there, at least in the US. Which is probably part of the reason Disney didn't try to go all the way with the recent deal.

Sony might be hurting for money, but there was zero chance of Disney getting the rights back. It's still Sony's golden goose and Sony will go down in flames before they give them back.

I think the problem is more with Sony than Spidey. There were too many ads for ASM2, a simultaneous or near-simultaneous worldwide release would have been better, it was more expensive than the films from the previous trilogy, and more importantly the ASM movies were simply not that good. And Sony is likely going to milk the franchise even more in the near future. But it'll still make money

Why can't Sony just sell the movie rights back to Marvel. I doubt whatever Spidey movie they make next will do much better and they're not making any money outside if just the movies? They could probably get a good amount from Disney for the rights, no?

Isn't a lot of these numbers studios use a bunch of fluff? I recall a Harry potter film where WB stated they made no profit on the movie, in fact they said they lost over $160 million on it. Each Harry Potter movie made at least $800 million at the box office, and the franchise average is about $950 a pop in gross. Which makes WB statement not make any sense.

I hate this example. HP is not the average of every block buster franchise that needs to be profitable. Besides product placement is a big business. Block buster movies can pay half or maybe all the production budget with product placement.

Will never happen because that franchise is the main pillar of Sony Pictures and the box office for this film isn't terrible by any means ignoring the low domestic sales. Besides, even if the next few movies bomb it is still in Sony's best interest to keep the brand given its popularity and the potential to make a ton of money off of it someday. (Ex: Fox producing a Fantastic Four movie right before the deadline for the sake of possible future returns)

The Sony talk has me wondering: in the hypothetical and incredibly unlikely event of a Sony bankruptcy and dissolution, what would happen with their franchises? Would Spidey go back to Marvel, or to the highest bidder?

This x100. Plus the whole untold story not being told at all. Sony should have skipped over the high school years and went straight to Spidey in mid swing. Plus the villains they picked are very meh. Kraven needs to be a main villain.

Maybe the highest bider but i can guess Mahvel/Disney having priority.

The problem is that Sony is dangerously close to that point

I remember rumors after The Avengers released that Disney was looking into buying out Colombia Pictures because of Sony's financial woes or something. Was that all Marvel fan bullshit?

I know Sony will hit a breaking point soon, but Spider-Man is going to continue making money for a while, and soon they'll have something Spider-Man related out every year.

It looks like the rights are transferable (the Thor rights were sold to Paramount by Sony, Fantastic Four seems to actually been licensed to Constantin Films), so they likely would be sold to the highest bidder to pay off debts.

I feel like Disney would be the highest bidder lol. Warner Bros. trolling would be nice if that were to happen.

Makes the most sense. I can't imagine Disney letting anybody else outbid them, and I also don't think anybody else would really want it with Disney owning the animation and merchandising rights already.

After Warner Bros buy Spider-Man, they should do a reboot. Once that reboot fails, Disney can do their own reboot. And when that fails...
Spider squished
ouch

Godzilla's gonna squish him even worse.

...and Arad seriously believes that a cross-over movie featuring Spidey would have to have him as the main character?
lol, idiot.
It's 10 day release is tracking behind Cap America 2, let's not even mention IM3 or Avengers.
Doesn't matter when Spidey is clearly more pupular worldwide.

Cool story, bro.
The movie was good :)

That would cost atleast 3 billion.

Where the hell did Transcendence go?

Good. ASM2 doesn't deserve much success.

It's not a horrible movie, but it's nothing great, and falls way short of Marvel's and DC's output.

The only thing good out of DC were the first two Nolan Batman films, or have we forgotten how abysmal the Green Lantern was and how meh Man of Steel ended up being? Marvel? Thor 2, Iron Man 2, the first Captain America were steaming piles of shit.

This. Tobey maguire was just alot more down to earth and i wanted to root for the guy, Garfield just annoys the hell out of me, i dont give a shit if he is more like the comic book Parker/spidey.

Man, I really did not see Neighbors having such good reviews (thought it would do much worse than 74% rt) and having good word of mouth. I'll try to catch it next weekend for sure, some of my friends tried to go but ended up not, so I'll catch it with them.

Cap 2 getting to 700 mil is great, loved that movie and it deserves more tbh.

Hey, the first cap is great. You watch your mouth there!
