Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

first one that actually makes me laugh, kudos

Why are people anti K Rool?

Why are people anti characters?

ah fuck it

"Slots"

Character I don't want is in, therefore character I do want has chances of being in diminished.

It's incorrect, but you can at least see their train of thought.

Or:

Having to play against or be forced to play as character I don't like will make the game less fun for me.

Yeah, the idea of "slots" is a bad outlook on viewing the game, like there's some boogeyman holding up a character's entry.

King K.Rool, King Wart, and King Hippo all need to be in this game. If not for the obvious reason that it will instantly triple Wii U sales, then think of all the young over weight Kings with nobody to look up to.

But Nintendo will just ignore them like always.

That was hilarious.

Slots isn't only reason for most of people. People just happened to dislike the characters or the fanboys who are behind the characters.

For me, I always felt that Waluigi is perfect for assist trophy but I'm tired of how loud the fanboys can be.

"Slots" don't exist in a 1:1 sense, but King K. Rool would absolutely take resources away from a character or other facet of the game I could actually want to play. It's a little different in the case of clones though, and if he ends up being a Melee style clone of Bowser then he was probably a last minute addition that I wouldn't be too bothered by.

I mean, this is actually kind of accurate. Chances are they don't make it past the concept and early design stages of development, but any fringe characters making it in probably do so at the expense of another.

I think there's a good chance K Rool is in based on this:

There's an equally likely chance he's just a boss, but who knows. I thought Nintendo wanted Kremlings buried and forgotten after DKCR, yet there they are.

There's no way to know that unless you're working for sakurai or ARE sakurai. We don't know how many characters were on the initial drawing board before coming up with the 'newcomer' list. There's always a chance that they said 'well, we have time to make X number of characters, so let's pick X out of this list of Y potentials", but we don't know if it works like that at all. To the best of our knowledge, it's just decided based on popularity/uniqueness/how interesting they are. We also know that the pokemon company pretty much tells sakurai what the best pokemon to use are.

Kremlings are the most obvious generic DK enemies to include in Smash Run, so I don't necessarily see what they have to do with a playable K. Rool. He could still just be an Assist Trophy or stage hazard.

I can think of maybe 4 characters I wouldn't want in the game, and three of those are alternate versions of a pre-existing character.
Two of which are already in.

Adam Malkovich fans make yourselves known before I officially declare my seething hatred of him.

You just call me senpai.

I am an Immortal Demonic Robot Fairy. I cede authority to no one.

I like King k Rool, I'll like him in the game in any form boss,AT,trophy,or sticker.

I'm in the same boat.

And yet we still have all the evidence of seven possibly playable characters in Brawl with files left on the disc, seemingly implying that they were all in various stages of development before time constraints ultimately put them at lower priority than other characters in the game.

We'll never know the full story behind all of them, but considering how much residual data was left behind of Mewtwo and Roy it almost certainly shows us that characters get cut because they had to spend time and resources on others. It's not as clear cut an explanation as "slots" but the idea is the same.

How do you guys think 'unlockable/secret newcomers' will be handled? Will 'unknown' newcomers exist at all? If they do, will they get trailers? Will it be after 3ds release? Before 3ds release?

What if, for example, palutena is a secret unlockable character? Do you just have her appear in a picture of the day after 3ds release? Do you show her off beforehand in her own trailer, like every other newcomer? How will it all be handled? What's the point of a newcomer trailer AFTER the 3ds version comes out?

It might not be time constraints. Mewtwo and roy, sure, but maybe plusle/minun weren't fun to play. What if they decided dixie as a diddy kong clone just didnt feel right, and didn't have time to work her from the ground up? There could be a ton of reasons why they were scrapped. Time is definitely a possibility, but so is 'sakurai decided he didn't like them.'

You are right that we don't know how Sakurai work but I'm pretty sure that he would pick the characters based on their uniqueness with moveset (ex: Rosalina and Luma) and their requests and popularity (ex: Little Mac or Mega Man or Villager)

From what I assumed that he would have a long list of characters that he want to add to the games in order aka Priority List. Priority List would allow people to work on the characters until they ran out of times, so whoever are on low on the list are more likely to get cut. That's what happened with Mewtwo, Toon Zelda/Sheik, Roy, etc.

Also I would like to point out that that Sakurai had to make a decision between King Dedede or 6 clones to meat up the roster during Melee Development, so we got Young Link, Roy, Dr. Mario, Ganondorf, Pichu and Falco instead. I'm very curious about the result of SSB4 development; when people figured out how to data mining the information out of SSB4.

Don't let logic get in the way of BELIEVE

I don't think that wouldn't even be possible. Think about the attacks involved Bowser's shell, like the UP B. Melee type clone means reusing most of the animations, and that really couldn't be done in that case.

What if the E3 trailer were this one, but updated for smash 4?

:)

That's what I'm hoping for. A lot of people are talking as if there will only be 1 or 2 reveals at E3, but I'm hoping for a trailer like that (higher quality, obviously) that just has reveal after reveal and barely gives me time to react. I love that.

I doubt we'll ever have a reveal as exciting as Snake's just because he was too "wtf," but I still think I'd be hyped as all hell if Nintendo put together a trailer like that. Even if they were all predictable, don't care.

They "MIGHT" still do newcomer trailers to hyping up people for Wii U Version, even we know who would be in the game unless they find the way to hyping us up for Smash Wii U.

If there are any secret characters, I doubt they'd get trailers. The point of the trailer is to surprise/hype us up for a new character, right? That only works before a character is playable; once the character is unlocked, we won't need a trailer, because we'll actually be able to play as the character.

That said, I'm betting all the newcomers will be revealed before the release. It seems like the best way for Nintendo to get everyone hyped for Smash is to reveal each newcomer publicly before the game comes out. If Sakurai left some of them secret, those who discovered them on the 3DS would be super excited, but the people who forgo the 3DS version and wait for the Wii U would only hear about them secondhand. Much less exciting than seeing a shiny new trailer.

P.S. excellent Ridley gif, as always!

The character roster essentially being decided in 2005 for Brawl doesn't really give them room to cut characters based only on that, if they're adhering to that design document. Sure, he could have had enough planned leeway to decide that if X or Y isn't fun they should stop working on it and focus on something else, but that still adheres to the idea of time being the biggest restriction - you wouldn't have those assets in development go to waste if you could at all avoid it, because you don't have the time to go back to the drawing board to replace it.

The fact that Sonic was added so late in development kind of helps that case too.

I don't think that wouldn't even be possible. Think about the attacks involved Bowser's shell, like the UP B. Melee type clone means reusing most of the animations, and that really couldn't be done in that case.

Yeah, Bowser was just a throwaway example. Dedede would probably work better, especially if they depict him as Kaptain K. Rool. Jumping around, tossing barrels and sucking people in with his blunderbuss, butting them with the handle, etc.

I'm excited on the new posters newcomers tend to give
So am I. Here are a few ideas I had (assuming the leak is legitimate, of course):

Chrom - Chrom and Link are engaged in battle and crossing their swords. (Drawn in the Awakening art style.)

Chorus Kids - The Chorus Kids are singing with Jigglypuff, and Toon Link is the conductor. (Drawn in the Rhythm Heaven art style.)

Mii - Hundreds of Miis are engaged in a giant, comical battle royale.

Pac-Man - Pac-Man, Yoshi, Wario, and Kirby are chasing after food/pellets. (Either sprite-based or drawn in an ‘80s retro art style.)

Palutena - Peach, Mario, Pit, Link, and Zelda are standing in the foreground, and a giant projection of Palutena is in the sky behind them.

Shulk - Shulk and a team of Nintendo characters are standing on a grassy field, facing off against a giant mecha R.O.B. looming in the background. (Drawn in the Xenoblade art style.)

My fingers are crossed, but my inbox is empty.
My fingers are crossed for that too. They specifically mentioned commentators in one fo the announcement things, and I can't imagine many better choices.

Do you know if they've started contacting anyone at all yet? Seems like they'd need to give people some time to get travel plans arranged. I'm sure there's also a ton of secrecy involved though.

I'm sure grabbing random posts from 2007 or whatever seemed like a good idea to you, but as it happens, I still post here. I no longer think Pokemon is a problem for Nintendo because the company has much bigger problems.

It is so funny how defensive you're being right now.

Flipping though some of the old Dojo thread, and it made me realize just how much more accepting of Pokemon people have gotten. We do have the occasional argument about there being "too many Pokemon," but I don't think I've ever seen people post shit like this in our threads:
But you see, there are too many Pokémon. I love the games, but that is a fact. lol. 730~ is a huge number. The series will be a confusing mess in a few years if Game Freak doesn't stop putting 100~150 Pokémon every new generation (save for the current one, which introduced ~70... but who knows, they might still add a lot more Pokémon before it ends). Someday there will be as many Pokémon as there are Yu-Gi-Oh cards :( What a sad day that will be.

Anyone here going to E3? If smash bros is on the showfloor, what questions do you guys want answered (based on stuff they'd actually be able to try in a short match)?

I'd love to know the exact mechanics of villager's down b. Can you plant more than 1 tree? WHat happens if it's planted and watered and you hit down B, but you're not near the tree?

"Do the Ice Climbers still have grab infinites?"
no I don't care whether they've been already revealed or not

But the number of Pokemon in Smash is honestly fine considering how popular the series is.
