"It's completely without irony."

That's it exactly. It's getting punished for lacking irony. The filmmakers made the correct choice- earnestness is the right treatment for the material.

I thought the film was pretty fun! The only thing I really hated was the art style...the over the top cg look was really blah IMO - if it were a little more reality based I think I would have even loved it. The fat man was actually a really good villian, played the part perfectly.

Rereading this thread, its amazing how it tottally did a 180 from negative to positive.

speedracer deserves this same fate in movie sales, but sadly, it wont happen...

but yea, im glad people are enjoying it as I have.....It is a good movie and doesn't deserve such hate

So you want more movies like Speed Racer?

why not? it shits on movies like EPIC MOVIE...do you want more movies like EPIC movie? whether you do or not sadly, you will get more movies like that and not like speed racer.

Got my second and final theatrical viewing in today (bring on the Blu Ray!) and it was even more brilliant upon a second viewing. In the realm of summer blockbusters, SR is rocketing near the top of the list for me.

I agree with everything you just said

You do realize that even though you removed "awesome" from the line you quoted from me, the meaning of the sentence didnt change, right?

you should have tried watching it under the influence the second time.

my first viewing was under the influence and boy...was that fun

holy shit, i am seriously considering breaking up with my gf because she hated this movie.
DO IT, it's like a litmus test, and she failed miserably. Anyone who doesn't like Speed Racer (after actually seeing it unlike most of the haters) has absolutely no soul.

speakig of graphics did you guys see the clone wars trailer? WTF!!!! was the movie produced on a 360? :lol
I facepalm'd during that whole trailer, and even thinking about it bring back bad memories.

Finally saw this today. It was fucking awesome.

There is about 40 minutes in the middle of this movie that is truly wretched. But the rest of it is so pants-wettingly amazing that it just doesn't matter. That last hour or so...holy cow.

I was gushing to my girlfriend for about 20 minutes afterward. So incredibly good.

lol, what's this, Speed Racer Fanatics Fanclub? :P

not so much fanatics, as people that enjoyed the film and are annoyed at the massively negative comments its getting, partly from people that are prejudging it and haven't seen it.

More a cry out for justice :)

Watched for the second time today. Best movie of the year so far. Scratch that, best movie in years.

The whole final act is unequivocally awesome. The Grand Prix itself, the music, the flashbacks/quotes, the end of the race, the
Racer X reveal
, everything. It was all so well directed and superbly edited, with Giacchino's score being pretty much godly. Basically the last 30 minutes or so felt like virtuoso filmmaking to me.

I loved this movie. Oddly enough, the entire time watching this movie I was singing the song from F-Zero GX in the Captain Falcon storyline where he is in the bar.

"F-Zero, F-Zero!"

If the movie had ended after the cross country race I would've been supremely satisfied. That it goes on to become even more amazing from there and climaxes in supreme fashion while not ever letting go of the great family story turned it into one of my favorite movies, maybe ever.

The majority of critics simply blew it and I think most of the negative in the public is coming from people who didn't even go see the film.

I think the biggest "problem" is that it's not a dark, gritty movie like Iron Man and moviegoers these days don't want anything made for boys to be anything other than dark and gritty.

God damn. Narnia, Indiana Jones, and Wallie (saw Ironman last Sunday), are keeping me from seeing this one. Why are so many movies coming out at once?

My exact sentiments, quoted for motherfucking truth.

I'm checking this thread for the first time and the three of you who actually have decent taste in movies are saying this is all kinds of good? Weird. So I'm thinking if this is worth seeing, it's gotta be in a cinema given the style. Will I need to know anything about the cartoon?

It helps if you've seen the anime, if only because there are entire scenes ripped straight from it and you'll really appreciate how they pull it off with real actors convincingly.

Just saw this last night, and I really enjoyed it. I thought the first hour or so was "good", but then it kicked into high gear after that and became awesome. The best way to describe it, is that my girlfriend said I had a "little boy grin" on my face for pretty much the last hour. I also thought that Emile Hirsch and John Goodman were especially good in their roles. And, of course, the effects were mindblowing. Overall, the film is not one with a deep message (what did you expect?), but I hadn't had this much fun with a film in a long time. Highly recommended for those looking for a visual feast of a film that's uncomplicated in nature, and earnest in execution.

Saw it last night and it F'ing rocked.

I don't get why the critics hammered this film. Loved the art style, loved the presentation. (Ang Lee take note.... this is how you should do a comic book/cartoon movie live action in the future)

The story was your basic good guy vs. bad guy with some awesome race sequences.

I loved the over saturated colors both on the characters and the backdrops and the special effects were awesome.

I'm definitely buying this one on DVD once it hits. Screw the haters.

Love how this thread has basically done a 180 and become a lovefest. I dont see a blockbuster topping this for the rest of the summer for me. Quantum of Solace in November will give it a run, no doubt, but until then, unless TDK rocks my socks, SR will "win" (lol) the summer for me.

Typical gaf bashing by people who haven't seen it--- go see it, have a come to jesus moment and then reverse the topic like you stated.

Really the only other big movie for me this summer is The Dark Knight. Everything else.... meh.

I remember as a kid seeing IMAX that gave you a real sense of vertigo when the camera would zoom out over canyons and stuff... didn't anything like that happen with Speed Racer?

That was my concern too, I'm very susceptible to vertigo, but nope, no problems at all with watching Speed Racer in Imax... and just cause its a new page I want to say again, I loved this movie, the nods to different things in the old comic including Speed jumping out of the car and striking the pose... the old music... Racer X just kicking all kinds of ass... and Pops kickin ass... NINJA? More like NONJA... it's a shame what passes for a Ninja these days.... :lol

Awesome movie.

The cross country race was cool as hell, and the final race just blew me the hell away.

if you think those three are the ones having decent taste in movies, their love for SR shouldn't surprise you

Worth another bump.

I just saw it tonight and this movie was FANTASTIC. I was skeptical going in but oh man was I impressed. It was sooo much fun to watch and looked sooo good. I loved the music and the action and the races and the fights and everything about it was just amazing.

Please, please do yourself a favour and see it! In IMAX if possible!

I didnt see it in IMAX, but it was the first film Ive seen digitally projected, and wow, I was blown away. Couldnt have had a movie for my first experience. The colors were unbelievably crisp and vibrant, and the image was pristine.

Uh...nothing happened today buddy.

I said after May 22nd. According to my friend, some Russian or Chinese DVD quality version called an R5 release (?) comes out. I've been calling people out on it for a while :) Every time one of these releases for a movie... a sudden flow of reviews pop up on here :lol

duckroll said:
Nothing happened. Yawn. Maybe even pirates don't give a shit about this bomb of a movie. LOL.

I'm sure if it released. All I know is my friend always has these R5 Release movies a month or so after release and they're borderline DVD quality.

Edit: Found it:

An R5 is a warez release, made with a telecine machine from an analog source. Unlike a TC the digitalization is done by the studio itself with very professional (and expensive) equipment and usually from the original source. The purpose of it is to create a high quality digital copy (usually for a later dvd release). But unlike a DVD, an R5 is released before the digital post-processing is finished. The quality of the rips can differ, but it can be even indistinguishable from a DVDRip since many movies are published on dvd with minimal editing.

Apparently studios release them in places like Russia and China to combat piracy :lol

I don't see what you're bringing into the discussion except crap about piracy that no one cares about. It has nothing to do with the thread, the movie, or even anything anyone is talking about. It's just weird. :P

I saw this movie yesterday, and I have to say that it was absolutely amazing.

The beginning was kind of slap-dash and the tour through Royalton wayy too long, but once Speed actually gets something to fight for, the movie basically just goes into overdrive and heads straight for awesome and never stops. Pure eye candy, fantastic style, powerful but simple storytelling, genuine positivity and spirit, just the best movie I've seen this year.

Hopefully people will give this one a second chance when it releases on dvd etc.

Calling who out? I don't see any piracy or anyone even discussing piracy here. You're just shitting up the thread with your "HEY GUYS SOMETHING'S GOING TO HAPPEN NUDGE NUDGE" and then "OH IT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THEY PIRATED IT SHRUG!" crap. Stop it.

hai guys don't forget to pick this up when it comes out in like 2 months ; /

Half of the people praising this movie now will soon be posting as if it's one of the worst things they've ever seen. Just give it a few months.
