Nintendo invites fans to the Super Smash Bros. Invitational

how is it "ridiculously exclusive", you've gotta explain yourself here

Imagine you wanted a chance to get in to a tournament. But the company that is holding the tournament doesn't give out any information of how to enter. And yet they still manage to get a top 16 roster up. THAT'S what I mean by "ridiculously exclusive".

People dont want to see scrubs playing the game, non smashers make even melee look like brawl.

so, let's see:
Super Smash Bros. Invitational

gee I wonder why that is

Yeah, that's how I felt at first, but I know roughly 7 of the 16 announced players and every single one of them deserves it for one reason or another. So hyped and glad that Nintendo decided to reach out and actually choose competitive Melee players and Brawl players. From what I know it seems like players are a little more melee focused, but I'm also part of the Melee scene and don't really know anything about Brawl so the players that I'm in the dark about are likely Brawl players.

Does this mean they have already anounced who is playing? I think I missed it.

Bolded: They haven't announced anything though..... about the players. Did you misread what I said or...?

So wait you know who's been selected?

But the players have been contacted and stuff's leaked out because it's bound to.

I mean yeah I know they'd have to be contacted pretty well in advance but you'd think they would be NDA'd or something to not say they've been invited to anyone until the announcement by Nintendo is made. This is all assuming Dao really knows something (and judging by his wording later in the post, he does).

I thought he misread someone's wishlist, but yea, looking at the wording of his post afterwards does seem to indicate that he may be in the know of something.

And going by his profile (and Google), he works for Evil Controllers. It seems he could be in a position to know.

Of course there is the possibility he was fed false info.

...Its an invitational. As in you're being invited to enter.

As excited as I am for the invitational, I really can't shake the feeling that something is going to go terribly wrong with it. I mean, Nintendo went from nearly shutting down the EVO tournament last year to suddenly becoming MLG partners and hosting their own Smash tournament.

I just can't help but feel just a bit skeptical about the whole thing. Obviously though, I'd love to be proven wrong and this whole thing goes on without a hitch and ends up being a great event, possibly even leading to more tournaments like this.

I imagine they wised up and realised melee/fighting game community was what kept the GameCube alive in the first place. Double down on what has worked before.

Would make even more sense if Pokken exists in the capacity most believe it to be.

Give us a hint man, give us a hint
Of the 7 you know, do we have multi-game representatives yet?

Anyone planning on going? I have some days off, so I may try to attend. I don't have a preference as to the Smashers playing, but I do hope they get Wife to do commentary. I always enjoy him.

Here's what I want: the winner plays Sakurai, who picks a new character to play as. Best character announcement ever.

I'm guessing the NDA is so strict that if you break it even a little your invitation goes to someone else. That's why we've only heard denials and silence at this point.

EDIT:

A new character added to the roster from scratch after June, huh? Hope you want the game in 2016

You can't really believe this. That is not true AT ALL.

Are these things fun to attend?
Wondering if I should block the time out on my agenda now while I'm there.

I mean, Big Smash fan of course, just never really "got" into the whole gaming spectator thing

Maybe he means "keep alive" as in "people still play a game cube to this day"
maybe.

Dunno, you tell me:

http://youtu.be/nJPmbgBp9dQ?t=1m53s

Personally I like it, but is not for everyone

Look at the melee attach rate. Yeah.... That system was a smash bro's machine quite literally..

Wait is it really? I want to see some numbers, can you post some numbers?

This could be a good opportunity for you to try spectating a tournament. I could understand having diffuclty getting into it when it's a livestream but spectating in-person is entirely different. Tournaments in general are exciting and hype, but this one's a little different because it's a game none of the players will get much time with beforehand. However, even knowing that it could be interesting to see how they develop something on-the-fly to win.

If you have nothing better to do (in comparison) during its time slot you should go, it'll probably be fun. Again, spectating these things live is a completely different experience.

It'll be interesting to see how the participants view the new smash. I mean, you're getting a lot of people who continued to compete in Melee despite brawl coming out... they're a tough crowd. They're looking for a certain type of experience.

It's overall a good choice, but I just hope that it's a win-win for everyone.

I just hope that, if when Nintendo fucks this up by making it a tournament of 2-minute, items on 4-player matches between a bunch of game journalists and Youtube celebrities, that the crowd starts shitting on it like they were at WWE show.

  • "BOOORING! BOOORING!"
  • "WE WANT WAVEDASH!!!" *clap-clap-clapclapclap*
  • "REGGIE! REGGIE! REGGIE! REGGIE!" when Reggie is nowhere to be seen.
  • "YOU BOTH SUCK! YOU BOTH SUCK!" during the Geoff Keighley/Egoraptor final.

I'd be glorious.

Brawl could have been a fine competitive game that could be played along Melee if it didnt had so many stuff put there to screw with competitive players, not with Melee players specifically, but competitive players in general.

- Slow down the game (no biggie for most, different style)
- Highly reduced hitstum (Well, you can still have a good competitive game..)
- Allow to airdodge after 13 frames of hitstun or attack after 25 frames, effectively putting a cap on hitstun (It's getting harder)
- Adding random tripping (what?)
- Adding random frames (0-2 I think) before a player input takes effect. (Ok, what are you doing and why?)

lmao

but I think they'd know better than that

I feel like any sport is fun to watch in the right context (i.e. with an enthusiastic crowd). I'm not a huge fan of soccer/football, but watching it with people who are super in to it made it fun to be a fan.

Oh, I know why people prefer Melee and have no qualms with that at all. I'm just curious as to how they're going to take the new game. Hopefully it's more competitive.

I think it's just that this whole thing is so unlike Nintendo that it feels so awkward.

I hope they can get D1 and Prog for commentary (they bring the HYPE and still keep it classy).

My excitement intensifies.

On this front, RogersBase (the dude who used to do some work for NoA) said that we would be happy. (To be clear, this is with respect to the commentators -- he didn't seem to know about the player list). Probably has some contacts inside NoA still that he talks to and what not.

This was on the Japan Time Podcast that was recently uploaded on shofu's youtube channel. So it probably is going to be D1/prog.

Yeah I heard that yesterday, randomly. Sounds like that dude knows who's going.

Just make the announcement already NOA!

Congratulations on your victory!

"As your reward you can now play against Ridley, who is a boss mode character that can activate on one stage."

Okay, to all the people saying that Nintendo invited the contestants:

How could you qualify to even get an invitation? Answer that. It's not like the people invited are celebrities, right? So they have to be people like you and me. So how'd they get invited? What did they do?

Wouldn't they most likely just be inviting well known individuals in the Smash scene? If that's the case then there'd be no need to qualify for it, you'd get in based on your history of being in Smash tournaments.

Win and place very high in various Smash tournaments over the year. The melee scene is 14 years, Brawl's scene is over 6. There's a good group of people that Nintendo can pool from in order to make a good tournament. I suggest you look at Smashboards to see the events that are regularly scheduled and see that with no Nintendo's involvement, and at times despite Nintendo trying to limit the tournament scene, competitive Smash has survived and thrived.

lol they basically ARE celebrities within the Smash community. For you, The Smash Brothers is required viewing.

This tournament is partly meant to be a preview of the game. I'd sure hope that there are at least a few matches with items and four players.

I know that it'd be nice to see some matches like that as side things, but I know people would be pissed to hell and back if it comprised the main body of the tournament.

The winner of the tournament gets a new challenger approaching meesage and Sakurai enters the stage on mechanical Ridley...

The fight begins and Sakurais translator says: If Sakurai loses Ridley will be playable
in a minigame for trophies...
and if Sakurai wins he will get to do the Kid Icarus game for Wii U we deserve :-D

Presumably, the most well known, top players will be invited.

It would be fun watching the pro players have a sook because they can't win with items.

yes i'm sure m2k would forget how to hold the controller and get wrecked when pokeballs fall from the sky

I'm certain there will be PLENTY of footage with items/four players from the Treehouse demos, or the E3 show floor, or the Best Buy smashfests... the Invitational, which would presumably involve top competitive players, should absolutely use a competitive rule set. Or at least the For Glory rule set.
