Woooow I forgot how good this genre can be

Gonna go get drunk now with some friends so ain't gonna say much right now. But is it safe to say singers xverse is the GOAT comic book trilogy?

Btw standout performance was McAvoy. Fassbender channeled mckellen nicely but McAvoy had a lot to work with
 
i watched first class last night in preparation for this (which i saw earlier today). first class was all right- kevin bacon being the big standout for me, but overall it felt like a very very very very very good syfy original movie. dofp felt more confident in pretty much everything it did, as well as more competent. it occurs to me now that there was never a point in dofp where i had to be told where the scene was taking place through text- that all of it was actually part of dialogue. the universe felt a lot more organic even with a lot of similar elements.

Just got home from it.

Really liked what I saw. I don't know if I would rank it up there with x2(going to take a couple more viewings) but I definetly enjoyed what I saw.

Must have more Bishop.
 
Me and my wife finally got back from seeing the 4:15 show at UCLA, and I really enjoyed it. Granted, I went into the film thinking it was going to be shit, but both of us were pleasantly surprised, and I thought it was great. A fun movie.

In my mind, there are only five X-Men movies: X-Men, X2, First Class, The Wolverine, and Days of Future Past. I refuse to acknowledge X-Men: Origins: Wolverine, and X-Men The Last Stand.

I think I'm satisfied with having just five in the series so far. For the most part, the plot holes in the various films aren't too bad, and I can just kind of go with it and ignore discrepancies in stuff like The Last Stand. DOFP does a good job of setting the stage for future movies in the franchise, I think.

As for rankings? I'd rank them:

1) Days of Future Past
2) X-Men 2
3) X-Men First Class
4) X-Men
5) The Wolverine

X-2 slips to the second spot because of how poorly they handled Lady Deathstrike. She's a really cool character, relegated to a mute minion in X2. Disappointing.
 
Just came back from the movie, and I was pretty underwhelmed at many parts of the movie. Lots of rough cuts and the (lack of?) budget really showed in some scenes.
 
I like the idea that Singer's films form a trilogy unto themselves.

X-Men
X2: X-Men United
X-Men: Days of Future Past

Possibly the strongest comic book "trilogy" of all time.
 
Movie was decent but all the new characters looked hella lame. Quicksilver was cool but damn did he look hokey. All the other new characters were just there.

I saw it with my girlfriend and all she has seen is First Class, The Wolverine and I think Origins. She enjoyed the movie. There are just a few references she will miss, but as long as she is aware that the trilogy of X-Men movies exists she will be alright.

I wish the action was better, because then it wouldve been a really awesome movie, instead of just a good one.

Good movie though. Will have to watch it in 3D now. Have a bunch the quicksilver scene is gonna be amazing in 3D.
 
Am I the only one who thought the movie was a sad attempt at rebooting X-Men in a way? I mean now they can basically make another bunch if X-Men movies following a completely different storyline.

Singer's 3 films are pretty good across the board.

That scene takes place ~2016 (~10 years after X3) and DoFP takes place in 2023. Fill in your personal theory on how Wolverine got it in those 7 years.
 
Just came back from watching the movie back to back with Godzilla. It was great, best X-Men movie yet and easily on par with Captain America The Winter Soldier if not slightly better. Everyone was great in this movie, but the standout like it's already been said was McAvoy. As for characters, Quicksilver was absolutely hilarious in the short time he was on-screen, and the way Blink used her portals was nothing short of awesome and mindblowing.

Yeah, the movie was awesome. I thought First Class was a damn good return to form but Days of Future Past is even better. Can't wait now to see
Apocalypse
in the next movie.

Works for me, we need all attempt to erase the existence of X-3.
 
So I finally saw this film this morning and I have to say, it's good to be vindicated.

I thoroughly enjoyed the film, and was rarely taken out of it, the only instance being some overly expositionary dialogue. Quicksilver was great and I can't wait for his return.

I need more time to think about it since after I saw it, chores and work right after, but I still want to put X2 over it. It's a nagging feeling, while I thought it's easily one of the best, it still has to battle X2 for me.

Pretty much how I felt. I expect some of the opinions to dial back after the opening week hype-wave and second/third viewings. A lot of these sentiments I can't help but feel were serviced by subterranean expectations due to the franchise's spotty history. This is a summer-action flick that exhausted its kinetic energy early with the
Quicksilver scene
and had nothing left in terms of raw, potential energy - which is disappointing to me, personally. The catharsis you often associate with a film like this, being released around this time; wasn't really there.

Had this film released during a different time frame, say, winter; I'd likely be a bit more receptive to it.

Nice and respectable character-driven superhero flick, but ultimately, nothing special.
 
Saw this a few days ago, probably one of the best comic book movies I've seen. God Damn, Singer is on fire when it comes to X-men. Went with a few friends and my brother, everyone was blown away.

Yeah, I felt like that scene was one of the more unique things in the movie. Everything else felt like something I'd seen in other blockbuster/Marvel movies over the years. I just feel like they could be doing a lot more interesting/entertaining things in a universe populated by people with crazy mutant powers.
 
I'm sad to report that the film did little for me. It had a few good moments, Quicksilver probably being the only highlight of the film, but everything else was pretty meh.
I feel like the movie spent 2 hours figuring out how to hit the reset button.
Not sure if that's really a spoiler but just in case.

not even surprised anymore tbh. we're like gafbros at this point.

what this film did was combine some great action scenes (quicksilver...seriously. he made super-speed the hottest power in the game) with good storytelling. interesting themes came up (like addiction) and some surprising performances. like i know a lot of people were sick of wolverine by now, but it was refreshing to see him as the mature voice in this series for once.

i don't see anything in the genre topping this until the next xmen.

that end scene reminded me of
the inception ending. except i was grinning even more during this because it was so good to see the OGs back together in the school
 
growing up with the series really helped too tho. like this was during the lotr and matrix years for me. when i was in...junior high.

i think i was around 12-13 when x2 was in theaters.
 
Holy crap. How did Singer pull this of? So much stuff went down, and by far most of it was spot on. For me the only complaint might be a lack of action
in the 70's
but the fights
against the freaking menacing sentinels in the future
more than made up for it.

I loved the acting of most, but I felt Patrick Stewart overacted just a bit. Don't min Jenifer Lawrence at all, and I loved how she was the grey area between Mags and X, who are both pretty grey already. And can I say that Erik Lensherr is always stylish as fuck? I love how Fassbender pulls that shit of. And McAvoy was great. Really great.
And the scene between Stewart and McAvoy
was beautifully done.

I'm so in awe of how they pulled of and came up with some of the stuff. With combining the casts of X-men 1 and 2 and First Class. With the time travel stuff, that worked really well. With how they displayed and made creative use of the powers
X-men fights in the future, fuck yeah
. The tension with Charles and Erik, that already started in First Class, and ran all the way to the future. The drama between them. I was literally speechless for a couple of minutes when the movie ended and wanted to applaud in the cinema. Never felt the need to do that before. Awesome, awesome movie. I want to see it again.
 
Shame we didn't see fixed future magneto at the end.

Can someone tell me how xavier is alive in the future? He was ripped apart by phoenix in 3, first class didn't retcon that part I don't remember and the dark trask future is a continuation of the future created by phoenix.

That quicksilver scene was flawless. Hilarious and badass.

First class was suppose to be a semi-reboot if i am not wrong, but it got merged into the same timeline as the original series through DOFP.

DOFP does provide the dots for you to connect, regarding on how he's able to walk in X3.
 
Just came back from a midnight viewing. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie from start to end. People weren't kidding when they said Quicksilver was awesome, lol. Can't highlight any part in particular (besides Quicksilver) - the whole damn thing was non-stop amazing!

does this movie invalidates ...well, all of the X films? In terms of timeline, that is.
 
Went in with zero hype after being extremly disapointed with ASM2. Left extremly satisfied. Absolutly loved it.
Quiksilver scene was the obvious highlight, but one that stood out for me as well was the scene were Erik lost it on the plane, thought that was really tense and well done.
 
This movie got me hyped on reading X men comics. However I dont know which one to read. Any recommendation? My friend recommended Uncanny X-Force...
 
I loved it but...

I can't get over how much the movie has an Inception 'feel' to it. Tried to just ignore it, but the ending was in a way, similar to Inception's that I was just bewildered.

Not to say it wasn' good, just a niggling thought in my head. Both also has Ellen Paige!

Felt the same way, I thought Quicksilver was probably the best new character but the rest
from the future time line were kinda lame. Poor Piotr :( Felt like they were just there to 'die' twice and that was it.

Well, they were there to show how serious and threatening the future is. As Riposte already said many times in the thread, they are the reason you want Wolverine, Charles and Magneto to succeed in the past. And don't you dare calling Blink lame. Her use of portals made all those fight scenes simply amazing.

It was not a retcon. Xavier discussed the concept and morality of a mutant doing such a thing during the movie. They could've said it was just a braindead person. A twin is more dubious but not impossible for a comic book movie.

It's arguable Jean herself wasn't dead and that Wolverine wasn't dreaming of her during his 2nd movie. It doesn't matter anymore though because the series was undone.

I agree it was a reboot of sorts, but I thought it was well done. Reminded me how they rebooted Star Trek (2009), still respected the other movies in the series by acknowledging they happened but wiped the slate clean. I much prefer this type of reboot compared to a series like Spiderman, a cold reboot with the first movie dedicated to an origin story everyone knows.
 
I've seen X-Men 1 through 3.

Will I become easily lost if I don't see First Class before seeing Days of Future Past?

Yeah, they're redshirts. Problem is no one gives any fucks if a redshirt dies and redshirts aren't characters. There were lots of actual characters from the school that could have taken the place of those characters and been people we actually have a relationship with. But instead it's just characters that were there in the comic so they're there in the movie.

I guess Iceman was there though so at least they had one character.

You're assuming everyone feels the same way as you do in not giving fucks. But you're wrong. I did give a fuck and other people did too. Read all of the "Blink is awesome"/"(new character) death is awful"/"Why can't we see more of the future characters?" comments. Their presence might be brief but they were given enough moments in the film to make some of us sympathize with their plight.
 
Throwing new characters into the future group expands the world they're in, and is far less contrived than simply having the last mutants on earth conveniently all be X-Men too.

It's not like there were many left to pick from anyway.
 
My only problem with the future scenes is that there are so few expendable (for the lack of better word) characters that we're familiar with from previous movies.
You know that Wolvie, Professor and Kitty have to survive, so that only leaves Magneto, Bobby and Storm as kill-able ones.
