Katamari Damacy coming to DS

it'll be interesting to see what they can do with the hardware.

im expecting something a bit different though, since well, the DS isn't really capable of busting games like Katamari out.

should be excellent though.

yeah, katamari damacy is perfect for portables, and for ds.

You should try and tell that to all the millions of pple who already commited the mistake of buying one.....

The graphics in Katamari Damacy have a blocky low polygon style, so the DS won't be that bad off. The stages will probably be smaller.

How will it control?

Can the DS really handle KD? The scaling in the PS2 version was really impressive despite the blocky graphics. Seeing the backgrounds of small rooms fade away in Nintendogs doesn't give me a lot of hope...

But hey, if Namco thinks they can do it, I guess they can do it.

if the DS can pull a Mario 64, then it can easily do Katamari

That's terrible logic...

That's like saying "If the N64 can handle Quake 2, then it can easily do Doom 3".

This game is going to be great, I guess you contol the entire game using the touch pad, scratch in the direction you want to go. Can't wait. This news IS true btw.

I imagine on the bottom screen would be a circle that represents the Katamari. Rub/push/touch it in a direction to move it that way in the top screen.

I'm hoping it's more along the lines of a tilt sensor on the cartridge, with maybe tapping on the touchscreen to jump and scratching in a certain direction to get a boost that way. Things like that. Constantly rubbing the touchscreen would be a major pain in the ass to move in KD.

In fact, it might not be bad to maybe extend the field of vision to the upper screen, as well. Especially as the Katamari becomes much bigger. There are several potentially awesome ways of pulling this off, now that I think about it.

I don't know what is this Opa Ages besides that people are comparing them to a cesspool, BUT, did they ever posted fake, batshit insane info?

Should I believe them? Should I believe this news?

It's true. They aren't even the originators of this, it started at Gamesarefun i believe. Anyway, it's confirmed to be true at the nintendo insider forums at nintendo.com too so you better believe it.

You know that snowball mini-game in mario DS.. that's what i had imagined.

I'm thinking 2D top-down view for this game. I have yet to play the original (PAL release get here now!) but I'm already looking forward to this.

Hopefully not. As I've experienced with that and Pokemon Dash, constantly rubbing the stylus gets old really, really fast. It would be really annoying and hard on your hand.

It's listed in NP, so unless they made some mistake, it's true.

Anyone know if you can have 2 points of input touching the DS at the same time? IE like using 2 styli as analog sticks a la PS2 controls. I'm too lazy to go pull out First Hunt and check it out on the boot screen with all the touch sensitive octagons.

I don't believe so. Just one.

Maybe Baiten Kaitos will be a Card Game, like the ones in Mario 64 DS, and Katamari Damacy DS will be a shitty puzzle game :/

I don't know why, but I'm sure namco can totally waste these licenses on DS.

Is there any reason why this would be the case, or is this just a devil's advocate-type deal?

I have been fighting the temptation to trade in my DS towards a PSP, this gives me one more reason to hang on to it. :)

pacnroll_nds_ss02.jpg

I suspect Katamari's control to work in a similar way to Pac'n'roll, but perhaps with the ability to hold the stylus outside of the circle for constant movement. Considering Pac'n'roll is from namco, I wouldn't be surprised if Katamari came out as a natural development beyond that.

The DS probably couldn't come close to doing anything like the PS2 version, it just doesn't have the memory/processing power to handle hundreds of dynamic 3D objects in each stage.

Gonna have to say thay while the DS will have cool controls, I'd rather have the PSP's media capabilities here.

And why are people having such a disconnect on the controls. The PS2 version certainly didnt have to control like that. Off the top of my head I can think of 2 other ways it would work just as well.

The touch screen will work fine. Hell the d-pad with face buttons would work fine. They didn't have to use Atari's Assault scheme.

Pac-Pix and Pac-Roll take your statement, crumple it up and set fire to it. And if you disagree, I will fight you.

You know, I'm just really glad that Pac-N-Roll was confirmed to be an actual retail product. I liked Pix at E3 but I was much more excited about Roll.

im down for Katamari with a new control scheme so long as it still works really well. i wouldn't see a problem with controlling it with the touch screen though.

although i have a gut feeling that this game is gonne be pretty different from the first two games in the series.

i'm glad you guys are thinking about tilt sensor technology, pac pix katamari and many other games can use this control meathod.

yes game are fun, sorry for confusion.

This is the worst news ever. I'm surprised people are happy with playing katamari on a tiny screen with PSone level graphics and scope. Not to mention the music.

Graphics and scope weren't what made Katamari Damacy great.

Seriously.

Of all the series' to come to the DS, this sounds like one of the better ideas. I rented KD and just started to get into it before it went back. This is good news, though I'm not sure if I'd purchase it.

It's just some preventive auto-hypnotism so I won't be disapointed if something like that ever happens ^_^;

scope is clearly one of the things that makes katamari damacy great. it plays with scope. it constantly says, "see, look what i can do with scope." when you go from picking up thumbtacks to picking up cars to picking up continents, that's scope at work. i can't believe that someone came away from katamari damacy without an appreciation for scope. i can't believe that someone then agreed with that impression. by all means, continue to prosecute The Case Against Technology. but please read your own posts.

Actually they did a great part of it (as well as the music score). You need the power to create that kind of rich environment, for going seamless from rolling tiny stuff in the living room to whole stadiums and skycrapers through the city. That's what fascitated me the most about KD and I really doubt I'll get the same thing on DS.

The dont get it. Simply imagine the game doesnt exist.

I'll get it if that's gonna be the only handheld version of it. I love the game and I'll get it even for cell phones. I'm just not happy if this news means it's not coming to PSP 'cos I really wished to play it there most of all.

Sorta, but considering the PS2 sequel is on the way I can't say I'm bothered as much as other series which went to handheld-only without a console counterpart.

Personally I think taking away any aspect of Katamari Damacy, beit graphics, environment, scope, sound, etc., hinders in the overall value of the game; and it is something that no handheld, PSP or otherwise, could replicate.
