Its official: Apple just bought Beats for $3 Billion

Why exactly is Steve Jobs rolling in his grave? I hear that every time Apple does anything, and it rarely makes sense.

Overpriced fashion accessory brand buys Overpriced fashion accessory brand.

Beats headphones are crap and you should feel bad if you own them and are over the age of 24.

For a little bit of perspective, Apple bought NeXT and Jobs out for almost $500 million about 18 years ago, and that move laid the basis for their next operating system and a decade of leadership. Beats is, at most, a high margin cash cow. With connections.

This is exactly the kind of move a CEO like Tim Cook would make.

Match made in heaven

"Beats' profit margins in the headphone market may be substantial. A pair of its high-end headphones retail for as much as $450, but production costs across the brand run only about $14 a pair, according to The New York Times. Apple said the deal would add to earnings in fiscal 2015."

Seriously?!

I just heard someone at work say how excited they are for the new iPhone to come with Beats.

GAF your hate utterly fails. The masses have spoken.

Despite its size, this acquisition does not seem as impressive as Facebook's acquisition of Oculus Rift with respect to cost. Apple has been around for decades and this has to be their biggest purchase, if I understand correctly. Facebook has been around for about a decade, is a social media website/company, and has already acquired a product for $2 bil. That seems insane to me.

I read somewhere that this is more about bringing Lovine into Apple than simply Beats hardware itself. Doesn't he have really good connections with both the music and film/TV industry for their rumoured streaming service and potential revamped Apple TV?

For that much money they could have probably bought an actual quality headphone company. Beats is even a lower tier than Bose

I don't get it...can't they just make their own headsets? I mean why spend 3 billion for something you can make? How much R&D could it take?? Beats aren't exactly innovative or revolutionary in any way....

Why spend the time and money to develop their own line AND figure out how to make it successful when they can just take over what probably would have been their biggest competition? They immediately have a successful line of headphones and pretty much own that demographic when it comes to headphone purchases. Never mind the potential of Beats Music to cover for iTunes' failings.

This is a smart move. The beats brand is huge and very "cool". Also, they can develop Beats Music as a means to experiment with streaming audio and even continue to operate an Android version without raising too many eyebrows.

I normally can understand when something I may not personally care for is insanely popular.

I truly don't understand how Beats got this huge.

I hate the fact that they have resulted in all other headphones being Beats as well. I still like the behind the neck kind and they are almost impossible to find now.

Maybe we need to make spiked gelled hair popular with the youth again.

I like Apple products, but lets not pretend they aren't fashion accessory products. Beats, on the other hand, are just crap value. Beats headphones are the modern equivalent of putting a performance muffler on your Honda - it sells to college-aged kids with more disposable income than sense.

I am listening to Chronic 2001 in celebration for this news.

Really happy a West Coast hip hop artist made it as the first billionaire in hip hop. Can't wait for Detox, congrats Dre.

If you don't understand the popularity and influence of Beats you are out of touch.

West West Y'all

It'll be interesting to see where they take this in the future but I can't imagine how it will elevate either the Beats brand or Apple higher than where they stand today.

i cant imagine a better time to start selling stock

surely apples reached their peak right?

Wait to see what their plays are into home automation and wearables. Far more likely the market foresees greater growth potential for Apple in the coming years very soon.

Unless whatever they propose is a clear dud.

But I wouldn't bet against AAPL

Like it or not, Beats is a total zeitgeist thing, and it's been around long enough that it's hard to call it a fad. It's profitable and people keep coming back for more, though I thoroughly dislike how expensive this cool item is, and it doesn't historically have the build quality Apple products usually do. And before we forget, a lot of consumers value Apple for consistent material selections and build quality as much as they do the cool factor. Maybe that'll rub off more on Beats Electronics now that Infinite Loop is in charge.

Also interesting, the press release and the New York Times article both note Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine will report to the head of Internet services at Apple when the deal closes. (Which I feel means 'we would like to own the headphones stuff too, but we really want a better streaming service with your connections'.)

It would be cool if Apple actually made Beats into actual quality competitors in the premium headphone market and lowered the price.

Actually, let me revise that since this is Apple:

It would be cool if Apple actually made Beats into actual quality competitors in the premium headphone market and lowered the price .

Apple and lower the price are 2 things that just don't go together well.

You might not know it now, but this is the moment Apple jumps the shark. Maybe not next year or the year after that, but at some point, you're going to say, "Apple stopped being cool when they bought the Dr. Dre headphone brand."

I wonder how the investors will feel if the beats audio cool factor dies down by 2015 and investors ask for Tim Cook's head

Won't happen. Dre turned Aftermath into Beats Records. No hardware manufacturer can compete with the celebrety endorsement of Eminem, Pharell, Lamar and Co.

People don't just judge value based on quality and specs.

shit buying shit, a match made in heaven. its not surprising, both companies have substantial amount of profit margins. the iphone 5s costs apple $190 to make and they sell it for $1000 for the top end model(even though it only costs them additional $8 over the basic).

Nice, both sides win. Apples fairly smart; they know the headphones are inferior in terms of quality, but the brands immense popularity with celebrities and the adolescent/young adult crowd more than makes up for what they paid for in the long run. Beats headphones is more a fashion accesory than a headphone, honestly.

Dre made it.

Congrats to Dre! Diddy crying somewhere out there.

There's nothing that Beats has that Apple can't do better if they try hard enough(not even that hard), so I have no idea why they'd waste so much money on brand recognition.

They bought Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine. These guys are powerhouses in the music industry.

The actual Beats products themselves might not make a dent into Apple's profits but the partnership between all 3 parties might bring some cool shit.

I guess I'm just not the target market, but I don't know why Beats got so popular and apparently valuable. And I own an iPhone (which I bought because of exclusive games and not because of any kind of brand loyalty, coming from two Xperias and a Lumia [if anything I still think Nokia makes the best phones]).
