I think the version that people are downloading is 1.0, none of my saves would load either. I can play the current version with my disc, or this 1.0 version with the Games with Gold download. It's pretty bizarre, and there is no prompt to update the game.
1.0 Dark Souls is much harder though, especially at the beginning, so new players are in for a treat. Playing through it again, I notice that they changed a lot of the aggro values on enemies throughout the updating process. 1.0 enemies are more aggressive overall and enemies cluster a bit more as you aggro them, pretty fun and more challenging. Soul payout is lower for bosses, way lower, and humanity is a little harder to come by. I remember beating Dark Souls for the first time before it was updated, and comparing that to post-patch, it was much harder.
Not sure whats up with the whole different version thing, but I think I will play out this 1.0 character to enjoy the original, harder version of Dark Souls again.
I mainly came here to check if the Xbox One games were up for download to see if you didn't need an Xbox One to get them online, guess we'll have to wait a bit to get them.

what, really? they put the unpatched version? I wonder if thats a bug or something, I dont see a reason to do that, honestly...

So we simply haven't heard from MS when Spartan Assault will be available/when the June update will hit? I'm hankering to play it for some reason.
It sounds like it'll be available shortly after the June update goes out. We just got a bug fix update in the preview program with a note in their changes saying they're readying it for everyone so that update should be out soon for non-preview people.

It's not a bug. This is a "new" version. I noticed that this version was added on 21-05-2014.
I guess ya, but I imagine all the new players are on 1.0 version. When I first played it I saw bloodstains and messages, ghosts and the like. Then I didn't see anything, but it was still like I was online, I could put down white sign, messages and such, but the game world was devoid of online activity otherwise.
So maybe there are two different communities playing, it's really weird.
Not sure why the 1.0 version that you download doesn't then recognize a patch is needed and force you to update to play online. There is no check for it, I tried signing in and out, rebooting game from dashboard or resetting console. It's straight up Vanilla Dark Souls, next step is to see if I can get to the DLC with this version, or if that will just create a singularity in my living room.

Ok. I'm in the preview program too but I always forget to check the new patch notes online. Wish they prompted you with updates each time you turn on the box. I never know when my xbox has updated.
There is a force update button in settings now at least. So June preview doesn't have games with gold yet?

This is prompting me to jump back into Dark Souls 1 and experience the new community.
Geez the only reason I want my save file to load is because I dont have too much free time to go trough everything I have done so far, I dont want to pay again for a retail version either...I never finished the game before, so just thinking on going trough everything again just take motivation away from me :/
Be scared. Game of last gen awaits. Game is soooo good.
Anyhow, just resubbed for the year for $43. Looking forward to all the games we get across the two platforms for the next year.
It's really not as hard as people make it out to be...
I just cleared the entirety of the undead burg, killed some Taurus Demon (second big boss I think...) and beat some black knight which are supposedly quite difficult to kill and I haven't died yet.
There's a big ass dragon in my way now. Not sure how to proceed.

I'm ignorant about dark souls, so what makes it difficult?
I can think of difficulty in various ways, like games that require extreme hand eye coordination, or learning complicated combos, or precise controls (timing/jumping) in a platformer, grinding for levels, etc.

I think its not really that Dark Souls is difficult its just that other games are too easy.
Dark Souls doesn't hold your hand at all. You have to learn everything yourself (or consult the wiki you cheater).
The best way to describe its difficulty is fair. It will punish you for mistakes, but reward you for good, patient play. Nothing really feels like "bullshit" in the game, every death for the most part will feel like its your fault and not the game,
I know this isn't a replacement but if you quit from the menu at any point it autosaves that moment.
When walking down the bridge there should be a staircase on your right. Once down there there should be a path to your left iirc back to the bonfire from before the Taurus demon just remember to kick the ladder to use it as shortcut back to the bridge area
Take your time explore as much as possible not too much
or you will end up in a places where you may be instant-killed by some random super enemyColonel Nasty

I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but as a Gold member can you add Xbox One games to your account without having the console the same way you can do with PS4 games in the PS Store?
You can do this from the website. The free games arent set up yet on X1 so wait on it.
