Fighting Games Weekly | June 2-8 | The Final Kountdown

MK and Injustice look decent technically speaking but they aren't really beautiful. The CG trailer is far ahead of anything they have done in-game. With the game being cross gen and on UE3 I am not expecting a huge upgrade over MK9 (it will look better but not that CG quality good).

People need to keep their expectations in check.

They haven't done any for next gen so saying that they haven't made anything beautiful is premature. Also, compared to all the other fighting games, I would say both NRS games are better looking. But you are right, it is a cross gen with UE3 so having a realistic expectation is needed. Let's hope that the game is getting two different studios so that one team takes care of last gen and the other does current gen.

I was saying that they haven't made anything beautiful in the previous gen either.

I don't think Injustice/MK9 look better than Virtua Fighter, DOA or Soul Calibur.

I never liked the art direction of NRS games but I play Arcana Heart, so I doubt I have the best frame of reference for the western market. :x You can make a game with anime styling sell in the west (see: Street Fighter :p ), you would just need to avoid some of the more extreme tropes (but they usually don't).

Speaking of..

Who here believes they could be 100% impartial, balance wise, if they worked on a FG?

Not me. M. Bison, top tier at last..
I would like to think I would do an impartial job, with an emphasis on using analytics to make adjustments but I would still bias it toward the type of play style I want to emphasize.
That and my waifu would be guaranteed to be top tier.

I disagree, the character models for Injustice/MK9 are better than Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibur or DOA. Also, the bloom effects in the non-NRS games are crazy and make the game colors look kind of faded.

Soo... Odd choice of music for the MK trailer.
I'm hoping to see some actual gameplay shown at E3.

I'm ready for USF4 tomorrow!

I like the idea that they've possibly given up on maintaining a coherent story across games. I mean, you'd have to have managed "coherent story" in ONE game first before you try stretching it across multiples.

This is very true.

On another note: why is my T.V. displaying PSN with a cursor over "purchase", the good/service being Ultra? I REALLY need to get that ambivalence in check...

tbh, it would make more sense for Ultra to come out tonight at Midnight because it'd be turning June 3rd then.

I know I bitch about CG trailers but if Capcom announced DMC5 with a CG trailer I would bust a nut then analyze every frame of the trailer.

Edit: Seems like new info on MKX popped up.

It's cross gen confirmed. Damn with this and Forza 2 being cross gen GAF is about to have a hissy fit. Also MKX is run on UE3..
LOL at touting your game as bringing MK into the future with next gen technologies and sticking with UE3.

Too bad it wasn't Kanye on the trailer am I right
Power has been unfortunately attached to way too many mediocre games and movies.

The MK trailer showed an air chain pull, xrays, interactables, ex/supers

They ran up to each other at the beginning!

Unlike MK we actually have (shity) footage of Xrd and Xrd actually uses original rendering/graphics techniques outside of Unreal's basic appliances, so enzo's claim does have weight. If they really wanted to use next-gen tech they should be using UE4.

Can't wait for that UE3 deal with Epic/WB is up, doe. I don't think UE is suitable for Mortal Kombat.

Do the parries look like Pong?
I think Parry is the wrong word here... they are more like counters from DOA.

Like Sub Zero would kick Scorpion and Scorpion would grab limb and hit him back sort of like in DOA (or like doing a reversal in Tekken). That happened a bunch of times in the trailer.

It's either that system or it's just a CG trailer showing a choreographed fight. That's why I am not extrapolating anything definite from the trailer.

That actually sounds interesting. Meter dependent, probably.

If I had to extrapolate details about MKX based on the CG trailer I would say the following:

It looks like MK9-2. Same type of animations for combat. There might be a counter system over the combo breaker system from before. Game still has the various mechanics from the previous MK game like X Rays and ex moves. It will have interactable environment mechanics. Characters will have new moves. Probably better effects. Artstyle is similar to MK9 as well.

Initial impression is that if you hated MK9 you will probably hate MKX too... if you love MK9 you will probably love MKX as well.

Of course I don't honestly believe any of this... it's a god damn CG trailer. To me it's just a "hey we are making Mortal Kombat X!!!" announcement.

Hey guys, I just found a leak of a SFV trailer. Interactables confirmed:

I seriously doubt you can gather anything really substantive from a non-gameplay trailer other than the art direction.

The MK/Injustice style is so strange. Some of the animations look amazing to me when analyzed in isolation but I understand the complaints about stiffness when everything is taken in holistically. I guess it's because I was a fan of the games growing up, so I see MK9 and Injustice as throwbacks to those games.

Remember when SF4 was announced with that trailer of Ryu and Ken fighting in the field and capcom said you can figure out everything you need to know about how it'll play from taking a close look at it? Things are always carefully designed in these trailers to keep in line with the final product.

And what did you glean from the SF4 announcement trailer? Ink and 3D movement? The return of Ken and Ryu?

I don't doubt that they have a lot of gameplay ideas that go into the CG trailer, but things can change significantly in the last year of development... and I'm sure the trailer itself was made a while ago.

Based on this trailer I can extrapolate this:

*Trading hits works different now than in the old SF games (like the way their feet meet in an X, if that was a trade they would both reel back)

*Characters can dodge attacks while dashing forward

*Ken has a dive kick

*Game has 3D movement.

Which is all bull shit because that comment by Capcom was clearly PR lip service. Neither of those characters had some of the moves seen in the trailer nor does the actual game play flow like that.

On interactables, I'm totally fine with them myself. I've always considered it a part of skill and it increases the depth of competition and makes interesting. As long as it isn't super overpowering, I think it's pretty fun stuff. I've always enjoyed items in Smash, ridiculous items aside.

Ultra Street Fighter IV Digital Upgrade releases in less than 24 hours!

That's...remarkably non-specific, Capcom.
