Mario Maker Rumor Discussion Thread

If I was going to fake something, I wouldn't Photoshop something as obscure as a Mario level editor. That will get a rise out of nobody.

Doesn't eliminate the possibility that it could ALSO be for 3DS' though.
Does Any 3DS model use that stylus? Stylus is grey in the pic, and since it could only be a Wii U, 2DS, or 3DS stylus, I must ask something; have any of those systems other than Wii U had an grey stylus? I don't have an XL, but last I checked, the black ones have a black stylus (please correct me if I'm wrong). As for 2DS, all art related to that system shows colors styli that match the color of the center separator on the rear, oh which a grey one does not yet exist. I don't believe Nintendo is that sloppy to ignore this, but that's just my opinion. Unless of course, it's for both platforms (like I think you're saying), if it's real.

Gray? I'd say its just a really shiny looking black stylus. Just look at the other image you found of that hand.

Using the same hand doesn't really mean anything, it's presumably a stock image that can be overlaid.

The hand holding the Wii U gamepad can seemingly also be mixed and matched with different right hands given the pictures above.

No, but it is odd that both hands in the "leak" picture and the Google image are pixel perfect.

If real I could see a companion app allowing you to play creations on 3DS but the editor may be Wii U only. That's how Donkey Kong Plus was going to work across GBA/GC or the opposite of how Wario Ware DIY worked on DS/Wii.

detective GAF is so scary

Mario Maker is a pretty cool idea though. Can't wait to hear what Nintendo really has in store for us.

Really? The floor in the Mario Maker pic looks like a gray/white tarp. You can see there are tarps on the floor in the back of the second pic. The ceiling in the Mario Maker pic also looks a lot like the ceiling in the first pic. At least to me.

i don't think there's an issue with the presentation of the booth. it's probably based off a real picture. the weird things for me are:

-why are they using prints instead of projections/video screens as they have the last four years?
-why is mario maker the only game represented by a flat ad-like image?
-how come half of the image is full of blocks instead of anything else? (maybe nitpicky, but i would think nintendo would use various blocks from other nintendo games to drive home a point)
-what happens to us after we die?
-why does the art 'stop' with space on the left and right to spare?
-how come the kirby art work is the only one that gets cut off when pikachu and the villager are placed in the center?

Seems like a fun idea. Wonder if it's an eShop title, how much it would cost. $10 bucks to make and share Mario 1 levels would be ok...better if you could do Mario 3 levels though.

Well, they were going to do an 8-bit Donkey Kong level creator on Gamecube originally. This isn't really new ground for them either.

Oh I have no doubt that they already had some of these ideas long before any hackers did. Nintendo frequently prototypes and shelves ideas, then brings them out again years later.

It's just that this seems really, really late. Hope they do something interesting/new with it.

Pixel perfect in what fashion? The idea that it's the same size really doesn't mean anything either, as one can presumably find different sizes of the same promotional hand. The low image quality really not helping in discerning veracity.

In any event, it's a neat idea that would be low cost and risk to implement - assets can be reused etc. etc., relies on users to generate content and continue adding value. It would probably work well as a download title, and would fit in with ideas to use NFC technology to sell accessories. It would certainly work as a free-to-play title, with revenue streams from selling additional content.

If they aren't already releasing a Mario Maker, it's not a bad project to consider.

" Hayashida on the possibility of a Super Mario Bros. editor…
“I guess one way to respond to that is to give you a slightly different example. You may know that Excitebike has a level editor, and that’s something Mr. Miyamoto has worked on, so we’re certainly not opposed to the concept of introducing a level editor, but in my mind, it’s not really about the users having power or hurting the way the franchise is viewed, but rather, whether we can see the possibility to create a really unique and fun experience with that level editor. It’s not something we’ve explored in any detail yet with the Mario universe, but as with everything, if we sense a good idea and a good possibility, it’s certainly something we’d pursue.”

There's hope.

if it's coming as part of some sort of nfc deal, you think they might use those figures in the art, especially when there's so much space not being used. promoting an eshop game with so much art work also seems really unlikely, but they also devoted a lot of e32012 floorspace to the google panorama view thing.

Heck, if this is real, they could even give it away as a 'free' thing with NFP figures as an added incentive, if they wanted to. Just like the 'Photos Together' series.

Gut feeling, it's probably real, probably an eshop game, probably came out of an experiment for what to do with the Gamepad and they came to this and decided to release it.

That gut feeling is called being bloated and you're probably right, but not because of your gut.

Have we not reached the age where leaked/rumored photos don't look like complete ass?

Whether it's fake or real that is some shitty picture quality.

In an age where every phone has an 8+ Mega Pixel camera with auto focus, it is amazing that they all still look like they were taken with a 2003 flip phone.

Took a second look, but it's grey, just like the black gamepad's stylus (something I always found odd mind you, I don't know why they made it grey).

Nice find man! Even though it will probably never happen, I have always longed for an official SMW level editor, as the physics for that game aren't quite the best, but very, very fun!

You know, you got me thinking; how big of a presence do you think NFC will actually have on Nintendo's show floor? If this thing is real though, I don't think it has anything to do with NFC.

Here is what looks to be the same hand again, this time Rabbids Land and white stylus:

I'll care a lot more about this once they reveal it's not just NES style. I appreciate Nintendo trying new things but I'd need more variety.

It's probably just NES Mario 1 though.

Probably fairly large since it will be used in multiple games.

Shouldn't another knock against this being real be the fact that the poster/ad is really poorly designed? When's the last time Nintendo designed such a boring title logo and background? It literally looks like a cropped Mario background with a hand and stylus pasted on. Nintendo typically does a much better job with their ads, posters, promotional art, etc.

probably a good showing. maybe even at the 3ds side of things. if i had to guess they would make a sort of nfc 'section' to demonstrate and control the use of nfc. in that case it would make sense to pair up something like this with super smash bros.

I agree. It'd make more sense to see a traditional Mario font, either from the old games or the newer ones like 3D World.

A fantastic fake, but the hand evidence can be thrown out - why on earth would they NOT have reused one of their many many hand assets??

I think the word you are searching for is professional.

I think the font, if real, makes a strong case for itself because it looks like a modern take of the Mario Paint title screen font.

no, i thought the same thing.

What are those block standing on top of the regular ones on the top left and what creature (?) is standing on those too?

Hmmm...I think this may be real as well. It just seems like something Nintendo would eventually make. What if this is just a small piece of the entire NFC figure puzzle. Like, what if Mario Maker is just part of a larger piece of software, like Nintendo U (as was leaked in that other document - which is probably fake too, but just thinking out loud here)? It could be like Disney Infinity or something where there's a full game to be played with various Nintendo characters, but then there are smaller toy boxes or workshops where levels can be created, and this is just the Mario part of the creation process.

Just a thought. I'm probably wrong, but it will be exciting to see what's finally unveiled on Tuesday.

The lights appear to match in these photos:

I'm gonna go ahead and guess that the image is real, and looks like crap because it was cropped and blown up in photoshop.... until someone finds some original unmodified image. I don't know, this seems like a perfectly plausible eShop game to me.

I'm also guessing that the Mario Maker shot has things that aren't yet in their proper location

It almost looks like them spring items. The creature on top of them almost looks like its holding up a small sword.

Itd be pretty awesome if it goes deep enough to allow you to do some simple programming for a boss AI.

Fake or not, I'd LOVE to play with a Mario level editor -- I've been wanting one for years. Also, I think sticking with just NES-era SMB-style stages is perfect, because they're so simple and straightforward.

I mean, I was really into the idea of Little Big Planet, but that game is almost too deep (for me at least), and requires a big time commitment to make something great. Making Mario levels would be like "tweeting" out a level design -- you get a little inspiration, belt a stage out, and have something satisfying.

Of course, even basic 8-bit levels take a lot of care and consideration to be done well, but along with an unavoidable sea of crap, I think people would make lots of great stuff, too. What'd be REALLY awesome is if, along with demo levels from Miyamoto and co., the game included little tutorial challenges to actually TEACH you the basics of great game design. A game like this could become required playing for all aspiring game designers.
