Mario Maker Rumor Discussion Thread

If this is real I hope they don't dwell on it. Just a "here's a Mario Bros 1 level editor for $10" and then move on.

The last time Nintendo tried to push a game where the user provided the content (Wii Music) people were not too thrilled.

Just tryed it with photoshop and yup the hand is rotatted, but i was able to recreate in photoshop like in 10 seconds, so... i still call it fake.

Once more - Nintendo has used the same stock photo of a hand in numerous unrelated marketing materials, it probably is the exact same hand because Nintendo used the same hand again.

Mystery solved.

There was Warioware DIY. I'm pretty sure that was hardly pushed at all.

You know for all the Shit it gets Wii music still sold a good few million (and more I believe than guitar hero sold on any single format)

Of course the hand is rotated... we aren't getting a complete front view of the Mario Maker sign. The sign, and thus the hand would naturally be rotated if it were on the sign.

Face the facts here. The hand tells us nothing about if this picture is real or not. We've been shown examples of Nintendo reusing that very hand, so it is not out of the question for them to reuse the hand for Mario Maker. We've also seen that the hand itself is rotated, as it would be assuming the picture was real. The rumor itself also sounds rather lame compared to what most fake rumors of Nintendo tend to be about (AKA The Legend of Zelda: Rated M for Manly). It's either a very convincing fake... or it's real.

this is a level maker for the new mario boom game

I wonder if at some point they made NES Remix 2's Luigi game and went "I guess we could just release these tools to the public."
I laughed when I read this. That's a good theory, actually. Too bad we probably won't get an Iwata Asks confirming one way or the other...

If this Mario Maker is in fact real, there are a couple of interesting implications. First, I thought Nintendo hadn't done something like this previously because they see the quality of their levels as part of the Mario brand, and they didn't want to risk ruining the brand by letting people make subpar levels. If this Mario Maker is real, they've either gotten past that apprehension, or it never was a concern in the first place. Maybe they were just waiting for the right time to do this, and now might be the right time since Miiverse provides the proper infrastructure for sharing custom-made creations.

It would be nice if this were a WiiU title, if only because it could generate excitement for the system if done right.

Yeah how dare Nintendo reuse marketing assets in a game that reuses assets.

Oh I am all for the game, and I have no problem with them reusing art assets. I'm just saying that the poster is a blah for something they would do. But more than anything I was talking about the logo which is terrible, It's like a rounded helvetica with a bit of shading, I would just like to think if this IS real Nintendo would have done something more creative. Especially since they have a standard 'mario' font they almost always use for his games, which is why (among other things) this reads a bit fake to me.

Sorry I was just having some fun.

While I agree that the logo is pretty blah, as some have noted, it's pretty similar to their Mario Paint logo.

What i meant to prove with that image is that the hand isn't just pasted on top of it. It is real OR at least the faker took his time to edit too make it look like a real image.

I still think its fake.

The font is literally the only thing that does look a bit off, if this is a fake it's incredibly well done

Nintendo uses different fonts depending on the Mario game... There is the Super Mario Bros. font which they use for the New Super Mario Bros. games, there is the Super Mario World font which they use for most of their other games, there is the Mario Kart font which is different from either but used exclusively for the Mario Kart games, there is the Dr. Mario font used for Dr. Mario games, etc. The font being used for Mario Maker... is the font they used for the title screen of Mario Paint, fitting for a Mario game about creation which Mario Maker assumingly is just from the name.

Everyone spending energy on trying to prove this fake. Can we get one guy to buy a sneaking suit and get into the building and try to prove it true?

Hell, one gaffer from that retro is changing offices topic had the whole spy suit equipment in his cart, lets get him on this.

You missed that? There is a thread somewhere... I'll try to find it if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Long and short of it is just that. A new game is going to be announced and that game is going to have a 90 minute presentation JUST about it.

90 min for one game? Must be one hell of a game then.

Well, if this is true, I guess it could be interesting.

It could be amazing! There is much room to make a game like this interesting. Mario is already such a flexible character. This could even be a 2D sandbox game, like a Mario Terraria. It could just be a level editor. Even then, they could do some pretty crazy things.

So if shaking your hips and ass is shaking your money/baby maker, is waggling your Wii remote or gamepad shaking your Mario maker?

If this is real then we all know that Nintendo is going to spend a good portion of their E3 on it (whether if we like it or not). Think about it, This is a new Mario title that takes actual advantage of the WiiU Gamerpad. It is a title that will most likely take great advantage of Miiverse. Just the name "Mario Maker" gets your mind racing with the possibilities. It could move WiiUs.

If Nintendo is really making a Mario Maker, no doubt they are going to bet on it big time.

I wonder why though I mean who really wants this? This isn't going to move systems...it seems like a nice side project for fans of Mario.

If Mario Maker proves to be true, I am more than sold on the idea of designing my own levels, sharing/downloading with others, and making more use out of the Gamepad.

Never count Nintendo out. When their sales took a dip with the GCN and N64, they introduced the Wii and cleaned house. Sure that the Wii was graphically behind the 360 and PS3, and huge amount of shovelware, but it still had solid games that Nintendo first party delivered.

I am always happy each day that I own a Wii U, and glad to see Nintendo still supporting it and thinking of awesome ways to deliver great content to it.

(So I hope Mario Maker U is real!!)

This brings up a brilliant point I don't think many of thought of yet... Maybe it's NOT a super mario brothers making game... Maybe it's the sequel to Mario Paint... Maybe the mario level designer is just a small part of a much larger creative suite?

Logo typeface similarities make it far, far more likely that this is real, IMO. Good catch.

There also is nothing strange about reusing generic art assets, guys.

The only reason I'd like to call this leak into suspicion is how convenient the booth set up is. This kind of set up right next to the Smash stations but nothing else, and the fact that the Mario Maker image in and of itself could be easily put together from stock tiles?

Granted, everything else is very convincingly assembled.

Feels like I'm back at the Palutena leak discussions in the Smash threads. This feels like the kind of thing Nintendo would do, given how well NES Remix has been as an experiment.

Didn't seem fake at all, just a bit LTTP. Will be cool though.

I hope it's not just NES though. It's going to be, isn't it.

Why are spy shots always so shitty? I dunno guys, I wouldn't be surprised if this is real but have a niggling feeling that it is a hoax.

So if this is fake then the "leaker" took a real picture of the e3 show floor and then edited in Mario Maker... Why would they do that? Unless this same image from an old e3 is lying around the internet that no one has found yet. If someone really is working at the convention center helping to set up the displays and stuff why risk his job to take a picture and then fake a leak? Seems real to me

Hopefully it isn't just a simple "place these items here and you are done."

It might be too hopeful, but itd like some sort of AI programming. Maybe something that can be done quick, or you could get technical.

What about bosses? Wouldnt they have to be in this game? It would be really cool to be able to program boss actions.

Making your own battle stages would be cool. Imagine a four player battle mode with custom levels. Maybe even online(doubtful)?

First thing i thought when i saw this leak was Mario Paint. Then someone pointed out the font being similar.

Mario Paint had a lot of different tools. Hopefully this applies to Mario Maker.

Holy crap, you could be right.

Looking at that Mario Paint screen had me asking, "Why in the world haven't they made a Mario Paint for WiiU yet?! The gamepad would be perfect for it!" Maybe the word "Maker" is supposed to be then next level up from "Paint". And I'd love that. I played Mario Paint over and over again as a kid. A modern version with more power and better ways to share your work would be a wonderful thing.

Although arguably, wouldn't the sequel to Mario Paint be WarioWare D.I.Y.?

Either way, if this is real--and it does has Mario Paint vibes--it better have music by Kazumi Totaka. Yeah I know classic Mario is Kondo, but still.

I've never seen a fake last so long without debunking.

Creator should reveal himself and accept a deserved round of applause!

The gamexplain discussion of this on youtube made a good point about how it would likely involve a mish mash of ideas from the various NES and SNES Mario titles.

I also feel like it could potentially kill sales on Virtual Console of the old titles when the original levels are inevitably all rebuilt but oh well.

It would be crucial for there to be a good curation system so we don't have 5,000 1-1 remakes to dig through.
