Anyway, it is a really bizarre move to put a PSP remaster on next-gen. :| It's nice that it's coming, but I think this is probably one of the ways that people did not want it to arrive. (the other being in a mobile/F2P version)

Well, I think if it was hitting PS4/XB1/Vita as we initially thought it'd be somewhat odd BUT most people would be happy, if they got PS3/360 and maybe even Wii U covered then basically only a handful of hardcore 3DS fans would be left out in the cold (well, PC too.) But a portable focused game getting a seemingly bare PS4/XB1 port while leaving Vita out in the cold is just... what the hell. Hell, it doesn't make much sense to cut PS3/360 out of the loop too, even if they only got digital versions.

Well, there was the whole #jrpgvita thing that lead to Tales of Hearts R coming over here. (according to him anyway since it was thanks to the campaign) He seems to like to tease things leading to people getting hyped and then things sometimes don't really pan out the way that the hype leads them to believe so they get disappointed in him.

His position seems to be related to developer relations and helping them get onto PS platforms. He's gotten a bunch of indies onto systems but with bigger developers' games it seems like it's a bit more of a process.

They probably feel it's not worth the investment for all the ratings costs, getting it onto the PSN etc.

It's not just the resolution though. If they bother making any effort like they did with FFX HD, we might get better textures and graphical improvements. But it seems like we won't and might not be getting those.

It'll be nice if they could add in things that they couldn't, or forget to in the first release. They forgot to put in one scene

SE has done other HD remasters in the past. There are asset improvements, but they are not worth waiting 2 years for, when you can play a version now that is a reasonable facsimile of the remaster.

Like I said earlier, Sony tried to get them to do a Vita version but SE refused. Instead of going the logical way of at least doing a PS3 release they're now going to publish a 4 year old PSP port on new generation consoles without much in the way of visual upgrades.

If anything this whole plan might backfire on them as the game most definitely isn't up to console visual standards and not many will pay $400 to play it. They're doing a disservice to the FF fanbase which is largely existing on PS3 already.

The way they've been handling it baffles me a bit. If they aren't doing any specific optimization and just rendering the game at a higher resolution, how exactly will they be able to sell it as a PS4 game as opposed to a PS3 game?

The whole situation is super bizarre: people campaign for months to have the PSP game released on Vita (most campaigners would have been happy with that outcome). Then, when it's time to announce it, a Square-Enix exec fucks up and manages to announce it for Vita on the PS blog. Only to retract the statement within 30 minutes because it's actually not coming to the platform people were expecting if on.

I don't even understand the rationale behind not making it crossgen.

(Not port begging, just having a super hard time understanding the logic at work here)

SE has done other HD remasters in the past. There are asset improvements, but they are not worth waiting 2 years for, when you can play a version now that is a reasonable facsimile of the remaster.

I understand that. Especially with the English patch that's out now.

In any case, I really hope SE won't gimp the game with a lazy port. I think the Type-0 take on FF is a really good direction to go, especially towards more brutal stories and gameplay, in terms of good spinoffs to have.

Probably betting on a "long tail" of sales based on brand recognition. After a couple of years, the PS4 install base grows, they can make it a Greatest Hit, drop the price to $20, keep the game in print for 5-6 years (or however long the PS4's life cycle is) and have a solid slow-burner of sales, which is something they won't have if they release it on PS3.

If the PS4 were backwards compatible, it would be a different story.

Square is pretty good about keeping their back catalog of popular titles in print for years and years. (FF7 being a notable exception since Sony, not Square, had the publishing rights.) They're still making PS1 copies of Final Fantasy IX. Think about that. (Although judging from the price of new copies of FF8, it looks like that one may have finally gone out of print within the last year.)

I feel like the first game impression Square Enix brings to a new generation should not just be a port of a PSP game of all things. I really doubt they're going to wow anyone or even really improve the Final Fantasy brand in the west with something like that. I can understand why they think it's smart to do, but it has an equal chance of backfiring on them or worse, just being met with ambivalence.

It's Square. Their decisions don't need to make sense.

I wonder what will be the pricing with this game. Kagari has said the "updated" visuals are not that updated (so it'll probably be an up-resed game with anti aliasing, stuff you can basically do in an emulator)

They need to be careful with the pricing. I don't think they should charge for it more than 25 or 30€/$.

IMO they should have ported it to PS3 and Vita first (like FFX HD), sold it for around 40€ on both platforms and 6-12 months later announce a PS4/X1/WiiU port as a download only game for 20€.

That way they'd sell at a higher price it on a console where a "up-resed" PSP game doesn't look like a rip-off, and after that release it as a DD only game on new platforms. And, being a download only game people won't complain about visuals as much.

I think they just want to fill the void from not being able to release mainline FF game maybe in the next few years (I dunno).

It probably makes more financial sense to release FF Typo on PS4 and XOne, since the market size is bigger, but of course by not releasing it on Vita also means that they trampled the large number of Vita owners who campaigned for the localisation at the first place (and they could probably charge more).

If I were Square, and don't want to fork out money to port to Vita, I think it might be better to localise and release it as PSP download on PSN instead. Which makes a lot of sense, considering that it's PSP game at the first place. With it, Vita owners will also have access to it. But of course they'd rather sink money into iPhone version.

There was speculation months ago that the reason Agito has better quality assets is that SE planned to re-import them for an HD release of Type-0. Which is looking like it could be true.

you realize that it's only a HD port from PSP game right?
1080p and 60fps aren't hard for both consoles even they put AA in the HD port. The PSP system is very very very weak when you compare it to PS4 or Xbone, just look at PSP remaster (Monster Hunter 3rd and MGS PW) on PS3, you will understand.
Unless they rework on everything but it's SE...

You can just super sample the game for better image quality, to as high an internal resolution as the hardware allows it. In fact, you can do so right now on PPSSPP. I am running the game at 2k internal resolution. If my PC was better, I'd run it at 4k.

There is also precedence for this. Okami ps3 ran at 4k internal resolution and it had great image quality.

I wouldn't be surprised if evaluating indies and how to be more accommodating also had fringe benefits for bigger publishers. Game making isn't really easy, and I'd rather just get a damn highly anticipated game than having it stonewalled through stupid restrictions.

Yeah, albeit a subtle difference, here's the Digital Foundry article on it.

I'd imagine if SE REALLY wants to and doesn't significantly overhaul the grpahics otherwise they could probably do similar here on both systems, doubly so if they lock to 30 fps for some reason.

I also suspect one of their problems is ignoring "the more changes the more that stays the same." Atlus is still in business and had more issues with some of the higher ups than actual sales performance, XSEED, NISA, and Aksys all seem to be doing alright... SE's traditional fanbase IS there, I guess the question is how best to sell to them. And admittedly PSP probably wasn't good enough then, but just because it wasn't doesn't mean Vita is no good either, and it doesn't mean you can't go for BOTH Vita and consoles.

I've suspected their problem is that they want to be an AAA publisher but are best at developing niche games, and so kind of have an identity crisis. Probably also why they got Eidos only for Eidos output to rapidly downscale since.

Iirc the game has already sold more than 700k - 800k units in Japan alone. That's more than a lily warm reception.

Import reviews have all given the game pretty high scores as well.

The Last of Us is coming with the DLC though. Type-0 is just...by itself currently.

It might be an HD port/remaster. But it's never been released overseas. So it's considered a new game over here.
