Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 8: Put mii in, coach

It's possible that Sakurai wanted Mewtwo in but Game Freak/The Pokémon Company said no. Sakurai has said in the past that Pokémon characters are decided by GF/TPC.
And for what possible reason would GF/TPC say no to Mewtwo in Smash 4? I mean, they gave him 2 Mega Evolutions and made him catchable in X/Y.

I don't understand this argument that Ice Climbers will be cut because the 3DS can't handle a two-in-one character. If the 3DS can handle Rosalina, whose Luma can separate itself from her and act autonomously in a way Nana never has, why can't it handle Ice Climbers?

It was comments he made in an interview. There is evidence he figured out a way to get beyond the issue. From what we heard, it seems Captain Falcon, Ness, and Ice Climbers have a high chance of being in the game. I am excited honestly because this game will show the true potential of the 3DS.

So tired of maining someone new every game...Pokemon Trainer gets cut and though Charizard is in he was the least fave of mine to play with.

Now all this Lucas is cut talk is really bumming me out. Especially after my Melee mains got cut going to Brawl in Roy and Doc Mario. I suppose I could go back to Kirby and Fox to play as...

Luma obviously isn't as detailed as Rosalina or other main characters. With the Ice Climbers, you've got two characters who are supposed to be almost identical to the other members of the playable cast. Like I mentioned there, they likely could make them with less polygons than other playable characters, but I'm not sure how big the sacrifices would be to achieve that. If they're cut, it's likely due to that problem.

I am mostly just guessing by file size. The biggest 3DS game has been around 4 GB. It would be hard to fit 50 characters and 12 stages in that file size.

Character models, animations and grunts/short quotes really don't take that much space by themselves. Things like bgms (if they are actually recorded, rather than midi-like compositions), spoken dialogue and CG movies take up much more space than any PS2 level character model. Look at Pokemon XY with 700+ Pokemon 3d models and animations.

The stained glass character art guy is back, hurrah!

I ain't super exited about the newcomers either. I like Greninja's design and he seems to be sort of similar to hyperactive Melee Sheik so I think I'll just stick with him. Going to experiment with Rosalina but she seems to be super slow

It'd be bullshit if we lose Lucas but keep Toon Link.
From the "Nintendo all-star" angle, Lucas appeared in one Japan-only game that sold poorly, whereas the cel-shaded Zelda games have collectively sold over 10 million units over the course of a decade. Just because Toon Link is more of a clone than Lucas doesn't mean he's an inherently unimportant character.

So the same size as Brawl. The 3DS is capable of reproducing another Brawl then.

Half of Brawl was taken up just by CGs, and then there was the huge collection of BGMs, which also has been confirmed to not be in the 3ds version (each stage only has two bgms).

True, the video renders would take up 2 GB easily. BGM I am not sure would take up that much room. I can see if the game is 8 GB it having 48 characters and 24 stages.

Isn't it odd that with each character having 12 specials, 4 being default, that characters like Toon Link have basically the same moveset as Link?

It would be one thing if the moves were basically slightly different variations of the specials, like Mario's larger but slower fireball, for all characters but the Palutena and Mii Fighter trailer implies many characters will have wildly different special moves.

I hope this doesn't mean the "default" and balanced version of, say, Ganondorf will be a slightly different version of Captain Falcon and the moves more representative of him as a character would be bonus specials and therefore banned from For Glory.
Of course, one could make the argument that Sakurai can slavishly meet the demands of this Ganondorf-must-not-change group I'm not sure exists by sneaking in these Ganondorfy moves as extra moves.

Audio takes up a huge amount of space without compression (See: Titanfall's 48GB file size), and even with compression makes a significant dent in available memory. Brawl's audio files often valued in the Megabytes.

It won't.

The CGI in Brawl took up half of the 8.5GB disc used for Brawl. Music takes up a lot of space as well and considering how much there was for Brawl, it took up a large amount.

The assets for the 3DS version will probably take up less space compared to Brawl as well.

I can see SSB43DS be 4GB at most, most likely around 2.5GB to 3GB

The only disappointment for me was how much the Final Smash of characters have not really changed. I really hope they do not give Falco Landmaster otherwise I may scream.

You are probably right. I was thinking about the max limits. With everything done and said, 3DS will probably be around 3 GB and Wii U will be 8. 48 characters and 22 levels each game is going to be my guess now.

I missed Pacman?? Good heavens, Nintendo's been busy since last E3... 3 new characters for Smash so far, right? And really, more like 5 new characters with the 3 different versions of Mii Fighter. That's way more than I expected.

Speaking of Falco, he's the character I am most looking forward to customizing. He's my most used character in Melee and Brawl and being able to choose different variations of his specials and messing around with his stats sounds so appealing.

Anyone else excited for customization as much as I am?

I'm very excited about customization since it have a huge potential to keep the games refreshing for most of my friend who would lose interests in the game after few months. Also we already agreed that we are going play a lot of matches with customization on, so I'm excited about it.

I think I'm going to have a good balance of smash since I have many categories to keep the game refreshing and fun for myself.

Let's assume Lucas is getting cut and the final roster is limited to 48 characters: Who is getting the last cut then?

1. Lucas and Wolf get cut. They're both clone characters so it would make the most sense.
2. Lucas and someone else get cut. The only characters that I would consider even remotely possible here are Ice Climbers and Snake.
3. Lucas and there's no final newcomer after the Gematsu leak characters. Not much to say other than the leaked newcomers + everyone from Brawl, sans Lucas, is the final roster.

Yeah, I am just throwing him in with that group until he shows up on the official site.

lol Why? Why can't you (and seemingly many others) accept that some characters will be in the game despite them not being "officially" revealed? You can't possibly think G&W and someone like Captain Falcon or Ness will be cut, do you?

But Mii Fighter can't be used (randomly) online at all, which is pretty lame.

Going by Mario Kart 8, this probably means they wouldn't be playable in something like a community or tournament.

Snake's gonne be cut.

I really want to see Pacman's Final Smash. I hope your opponents turn blue and you have to chomp them. Why does October 3rd have to be so far away? I want it now!

He turns into a huge OG pacman and chomps. I'm guessing he does similar damage as super Sonic when an enemy touches his hitbox.

Yeah, I don't know if Sakurai really doesn't want to reinvent these characters to save time or because he assumes people will be mad. If it's the former Smash games are chock full of things that, although perfectly pleasant additions like extraneous game modes, aren't as important as more, fully unique characters to likely 90% of the game's fanbase.

But yeah, I imagine Falco would be the same as he's always been. Ganondorf might change as his moveset wasn't pulled from another Zelda character.

God I hope not. 4 Third-party characters would be fantastic.

With Palutena confirmed the only character left for me to truly pull for now is Takamaru. Come on Sakurai, you can do it. Go for the three-peat after Megaman & Palutena!

I expect it's like Volt Tackle or Super Sonic but you're limited to the cardinal directions and endlessly go forward

I just realized that the 3DS version is getting released in Japan almost a month before everyone else. It's going to be literally impossible to not find out all the characters before release.

Who am I kidding? I was going to probably look at leaks anyway.

Oh wow, I didn't see that, that's really odd. I wonder if the size of the Mii changes the size of the hit box or their knockback or something? The ability to break the system seems like the only logical reason they'd ban them from online play. Doesn't matter much to me, the Miis seem like they'll be a fun novelty for a little while, but I'm gonna main Lucas anyway :)

Any more news about how Amiibo will work with Smash? It's super vague, it almost sounds like they'll be able to be called into a fight on the fly to play as a support character?... And what about stat increases and leveling up, those won't apply to standard fights, right? Just side modes? That's what I assume.
