So this is a horror game right?
All hand animated, it's the only way to make it look like it does, and there are no real shortcuts!A basic summary of the process is like this:
- Rough animation (pencil/paper/light table)
- Clean up rough animation (on paper)
- On a separate piece of paper, ink the frame by hand
- Scan and use Photoshop to clean up any unwanted mistakes (big ink blobs, etc.)
- Color each frame in Photoshop
- Crop + shrink to final sprite size
You do realize, however, that you're quickly becoming the hit of the show, right? People are definitely talking about it, and momentum is picking up fast. That's gotta feel good...
i've always considered different colored frames kinda strange and at the same time kinda beautiful.
Will you insert some of colored frame (just for "realism"'s sake?)
We don't have words to describe it! It is overwhelming and beyond anything our wildest dreams. We went in thinking, "Ooo, we will pick up a few new fans and our current fan base will enjoy seeing the new trailer". Turns out a lot more people than we thought share our love of the game - and having GAF support is beyond awesome!
We (Chad + Jared) want to thank everyone on here for the amazing comments.![]()

Yeah, the piles of paper (and unused art) are slowly turning into a mountain. The amount of pencils and inking pens that will die in this process is also wild.
And don't worry, we won't burn out, we'll just die the day after the game is released...haha.
How long have you guys been practicing handmade Fleischer-like animation prior to the start of development? I forget who's the animator for this team, but this work is great.
If you mean inserting some mistakes, then hells yes we are! We've implemented a random system that sometimes spits out an alternate frame that has one or more of:
It will be subtle but just enough to make it feel like animation of old.
- Missing Colors
- Incorrect Colors
- A slightly different frame that has a mistake on it
this game looks great. I very surprised this art style hasn't been attempted yet.
This is actually my first attempt at traditional 2D animation (tons of studying the Animator's Survival Kit!). I (Chad) have experience animating with 3D and Flash, but I think the biggest help is that I do a lot of life drawing - with a love of short 1-3 minute gestures. I also continually research old cartoons to ensure our animation matches the technique/style of the wizards from the 1930s.
Smo (who recently joined us) has animated for Superjail, Metalocalypse and Conan O'Brien - and he has a massive love for old 30s cartoons. It's awesome that he has a lot of pencil/paper animating experience...it's a very hard thing to find nowadays!
You can't, because you have to release a sequel fleshing out the mechanics and making it a full action/run and gun thing a la mega man / metal slug / contra.

just pc on steam? or mac also?
game looks gorgeous.
"PC" just refers to the PC in general. I'd expect Windows/Mac/Linux, though perhaps not immediately at launch.
Do any of your characters smoke a pipe? I need to know for avatar reasons. We already have too many ideas to fit in the first release. We will definitely keep adding to the Cuphead universe until our best ideas run out!
Should note the trailer specifically only has a steam logo for now.
