Cuphead E3 Trailer (XB1, PC)

This game looks fantastic. I wonder if they are using old-time cartoony music as well. This art style would not seem to fit with modern music.

This is a dream come true. In top 5 of best visuals of any game in any genre ever. Can't believe I'll be able to play a golden age cartoon. And the music is perfectly matched as well. Great animators on this team.

Don't know how long or short the experience will be, but without question a PC day one buy for me.

2015 :(
Will be worth the wait though.

2014 is bone dry. poop.

just wanted to share my enthusiasm here along with everyone else, I had not heard of this game till the MS conference, but now I can't wait to see more.

gameplay and length are my main concerns (as with all indies), but I'll have to support you guys either way just for the unique artstyle.

All hand animated, it's the only way to make it look like it does, and there are no real shortcuts! :) A basic summary of the process is like this:
  • Rough animation (pencil/paper/light table)
  • Clean up rough animation (on paper)
  • On a separate piece of paper, ink the frame by hand
  • Scan and use Photoshop to clean up any unwanted mistakes (big ink blobs, etc.)
  • Color each frame in Photoshop
  • Crop + shrink to final sprite size

i've always considered different colored frames kinda strange and at the same time kinda beautiful.

Will you insert some of colored frame (just for "realism"'s sake?)

You do realize, however, that you're quickly becoming the hit of the show, right? People are definitely talking about it, and momentum is picking up fast. That's gotta feel good...

We don't have words to describe it! It is overwhelming and beyond anything our wildest dreams. We went in thinking, "Ooo, we will pick up a few new fans and our current fan base will enjoy seeing the new trailer". Turns out a lot more people than we thought share our love of the game - and having GAF support is beyond awesome!

We (Chad + Jared) want to thank everyone on here for the amazing comments. :)

What kind of animation gods are behind this game? It looks so fucking good and I'm so glad I get to play it. The style is amazing.

Congrats, it's amazing! It's pretty visible that you are putting lots of love in this game! =)

CONGRATS!!

Also, can you share some snippet of the music? Just anything. A tinsy binsy will sufice ;)

This is in all honesty the game I am most looking forward to out of E3. I love when developers try new things. Most innovative title I have seen in years.

If you mean inserting some mistakes, then hells yes we are! We've implemented a random system that sometimes spits out an alternate frame that has one or more of:
  • Missing Colors
  • Incorrect Colors
  • A slightly different frame that has a mistake on it
It will be subtle but just enough to make it feel like animation of old.

How long have you guys been practicing handmade Fleischer-like animation prior to the start of development? I forget who's the animator for this team, but this work is great.

I can't believe this game is indie, what kind of budget are they working with.
also why can't we have an Adventure Time game that look like this.

Game looks nuts. This is anecdotal, but two friends of mine who are never into indie games and pretty much have no interest in anything that doesn't have 'cutting edge' graphics told me they think this looks amazing and they'll be picking it up.

These devs are impressing a lot of people.. Must be an awesome feeling. I'm happy for them and I don't even know the guys/girls.

Yeah, the piles of paper (and unused art) are slowly turning into a mountain. The amount of pencils and inking pens that will die in this process is also wild.

And don't worry, we won't burn out, we'll just die the day after the game is released...haha.

You can't, because you have to release a sequel fleshing out the mechanics and making it a full action/run and gun thing a la mega man / metal slug / contra.

This is actually my first attempt at traditional 2D animation (tons of studying the Animator's Survival Kit!). I (Chad) have experience animating with 3D and Flash, but I think the biggest help is that I do a lot of life drawing - with a love of short 1-3 minute gestures. I also continually research old cartoons to ensure our animation matches the technique/style of the wizards from the 1930s.

Smo (who recently joined us) has animated for Superjail, Metalocalypse and Conan O'Brien - and he has a massive love for old 30s cartoons. It's awesome that he has a lot of pencil/paper animating experience...it's a very hard thing to find nowadays!

Everything you're saying is hyping me up. I LOVE that you guys are purposely going for that slightly creepy from another time period feel. Glad E3 is lifting you guys up!

NICE

You guys sure have my whatever bucks this game cost. It's deserved

:) We already have too many ideas to fit in the first release. We will definitely keep adding to the Cuphead universe until our best ideas run out!

Yeah consider me a day one buy after seeing the trailer. keep up the great work!

Graphically this looks incredible, the animations are amazing!
I hope the gameplay will be just as good! Can't wait to play it on Steam!

Do any of your characters smoke a pipe? I need to know for avatar reasons.

(I skimmed the website. Close, but that would be weird.)

Should note the trailer specifically only has a steam logo for now.

Sure, but the context of the discussion was platform availability, not service availability. That being said, I'd expect Steam keys to be sold outside of Steam itself, just like, well, every other Steam-bound indie game ever. ;)
