MGSV: THE PHANTOM PAIN - E3 2014 Trailer (jp) [up: English]

I've always been hesitant about MGSV being a continuation of Peace Walker's gameplay mechanics. I'm a huge MGS fan, I froth at the mouth with every tiny snippet of new information, but I just don't like Peace Walker. I tried to play it on the PSP when it came out, couldn't handle the awful controls, but when the HD Collection came out I finished it. I got the true ending after about 17 hours, stopped playing it and never went back; it's just not what I want out of Metal Gear. I like sneaking and exploring and playing with crazy weapons and gadgets, fighting wildly creative bosses, toying with enemies and calling my buddies back at the base for ridiculous conversations about Dracula and poop monsters. There's none of that in Peace Walker, and unfortunately the things people seem to love about the game (co-op, base-building, endless side missions in the same handful of tiny levels) aren't things I'm interested in. I did actually get kind of interested in the base-building at the start, but when I realised all it entailed was farming B-rank R&D guys to infinity to make my numbers go up to unlock more powerful versions of the same weapons to fight more powerful versions of the same bosses, I was out.

That said, I'm practically beside myself about doing the same sort of stuff in MGSV. The thought of loading up a certain side mission a dozen times to Fulton one particular soldier out over and over didn't interest me at all, but losing myself in that open world and stumbling across hints about a scientific base out there that I have to find and infiltrate sounds incredible. PW's base-building amounted to increasing the size of a picture of Mother Base that you never got to visit; no thanks. MGSV's base building looks like you're actually building a base, one that you get to visit and walk around on, go and chat with Ocelot, actually train your own army like motherfucking BIG BOSS! Those previews talked about Fulton-ing goats, then going back to base and actually interacting with the goats! I'm going to turn Mother Base into a goddamn zoo.

I still have my worries - that they aren't going to bring the Codec back (tapes are not an adequate replacement, and unfortunately Ground Zeroes hid a lot of Codec-type tips and information in loading screens that you never see because it's an open-world game), that they might screw up the bossfights again, that they might hide all the coolest weapons and gadgets behind a hundred hours of farming and grinding, etc - but at this point my feelings are pretty much overwhelmingly positive. This game sounds absolutely incredible.

Lol I was literally about to post this. I love MGS but I find it so weird that people shit all over PO but talk up PW. I didn't even get to the "true" ending because I just couldn't be bothered to fucking farm Zeke parts/recruit more people. Even if MGSV looks amazing and they seem to have made recruiting/base building less of a chore, the fact that it looks to be just as big an element here, if not larger than in PW weighs my anticipation down greatly. It doesn't help that I didn't care for PW's story at all either...

PW had plenty of cringe worthy moments (
fighting ZEKE while J-Pop plays &the ridiculous Rocket Peace bullshit
), but it was by no means a bad game. It was great, actually. Especially considering it was a PSP title. I understand it lacked a lot of MGS tropes, but it still retained that MGS feel. Those side ops everyone cries about being so ridiculous are not meant to be taken seriously. It isn't as if they fit in the main canon.

PO, on the other hand, wasn't all that great. It felt like it had way less of a production value and the bullshit where you had to drag soldiers to Campbell's truck was annoying to say the least. The boss characters weren't even that interesting aside from Gene. I played PO once and never felt the need to go back. You can really tell Kojima didn't have a hand in it at all.

Update the goddamn op if you have a link to the video. They don't work?

I'm very curious to know where Big Boss and company crashes, who rescued them, and where Big Boss ultimately recovered after Ocelot
presumably rescued him from the hospital
. I remember in one of the first Phantom Pain threads, back when Gaf knew it was a Metal Gear title but it had not yet been announced, someone found some strong evidence that Big Boss woke up in a Cypriot hospital. I'm curious to know if anyone has taken the time to thread all these details together down to locations. All we know for certain is that Africa and Afghanistan are major locations. Where might Cypress fit in? Furthermore, what about Hungary, where Skull Face is from?Anyone else notice that Skull Face, FOX, and
XOF
are neglected in this trailer?

I just have more questions as time goes on. Is there a slight possibility that Punished Snake and Venom Snake are two different characters? I for one don't think so, and hope not. It's just that Kojima is so detail oriented that I get the feeling that there's something to the different names, and not just in a symbolic sense.

Then there's that e-cigar... Ugh... Seriously, this is the one thing I'm disappointed by so far.

Not sure which details are new, but

You hinted in the E3 demo that there will be new online features?

People who want to create a mother base in a very detailed way will be able to design it through the interface, or using their smart device. I cannot talk too much - I'm being watched, but for people who saw the presentation, it ends with your mother base being attacked. People can infiltrate you, and you can infiltrate other people's mother base.

You said you were feeling depressed after seeing what Rockstar has done with GTA V and the sandbox. Now that your game is further in development, are you any happier?

It's a bit different because Rockstar is going in a very different direction to what I'm trying to create. When we say we're an open-world game it makes it sound like it's trying to be the same as what those guys are creating. But this is very different - I'm trying to do a free infiltration game, so me being happy or depressed is a little bit unrelated. What Rockstar has created and the world they have created is super impressive, and actually when I saw the PS4 version a few days ago I got depressed again. And this is not game design-related it's just me. The quality that they showed in the PS4 trailer was really impressive.

lol

I also want to throw this out there... I'm so enjoying the Gaf community. It was through the Phantom Pain that I discovered Gaf. It's so nice to have a forum like this with minimal shizenposting and no captcha or post limitations. I am done with /v/ and gamefaqs.

I know it seems really nitpicky and trivial, but it just bugs me. Especially if there's no stated reason for his change to the e-products. I just see no reason for him not to be smoking the real deal.

A little bit, yeah XD

Could be the damage he took from Strangelove's tickle/torture that damaged his lungs more than he thought. I think Kaz and BB mention something like that in PW.

Ok this argument over coldman is actually completely irrelevant.
The whole the boss sacrificing herself still stands, even though coldman planned it. Why?
Because the part about somebody having Volgin fire the nuke in order to trap the Boss is only in Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops, and Kojima clearly doesn't a give a fuck about that game?

This game keeps getting better and better.

I was wondering about that part where BB fulton's the container. I wonder if it's possible, depending on the place you put it, to create a stable platform to climb some buildings. It seemed to give the player enough time to try and jump, the guy didn't but it seemed possible.

This could open things up a bit further.
But with flying sheep on board, this game doesn't need anything else

And dear god, that reddit description. Kojima keeps saying he is depressed after seeing GTA V, I just don't get it. This game is looking more and more amazing everytime they talk about it/show it. He's a modest guy at heart and I like that, but in this case I don't think it's warranted. This will be the best MGS in years, if not the best ever.

"I will always be with you", is Big Boss referring to a specific person or talking in general to all those who was lost in the battlefield? I think it all comes to this Ishmael guy,
he saved Big Boss in the crash (medic?) and protected him in those 9 years,
and then something happens to him which may cause Big Boss to seek revenge.

kojima is a big fan of gaming in general, he even presented the fellowship award to rockstar, i think that this hunger to making the best game possible, and seeing other people's work will only pay off and improve his own games.

It's great to read impressions from someone who's actually familiar with Metal Gear and doesn't just think "hurrhurr Metal Gear crazy Solid Snake". The previews from all the gaming outlets glossed over so much cool stuff, like the fact that you can do all your base-building stuff from within a mission just by opening the iDroid. Same with crafting and requesting supplies, just open the iDroid and select a drop-off point.

Also, all the journalist articles said Ocelot 'waves' at you on Mother Base. This guy recognised it for what it was: a genuine, bona fide, "You're pretty good" hand gesture!

Game of the Forever confirmed

i think the only one thing i dislike about the wall take down is that the guard is facing snake when he is walking over to him, when snake pushed the cqc button the guard is instantly facing away from him, when he should be still facing him and then tech the back of his head should hit the wall, not his face. Minor complaint but something i noticed
