Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

Like when? In free-roam mode? Because in the missions, whether they be Strike/Story, they're pretty smart, especially on Legend difficulty.
They'll chase you down, some will swarm you, some will jump behind cover when you fire at them, etc. They're downright nasty on Legendary.

I'm very satisfied with the look of my character. Too bad you only see their helmets (I wish there was an option to make them invisible, many RPGs have this) and there aren't too many close-ups when you interact with NPCs. I guess this isn't Mass Effect...

Edit: We need more options, too. If the Korean can do it I'm sure Bungie can, too.

My hope is that the character creation is just a sampling like everything else in the Alpha. If the final character creation is the same I would be slightly disappointed.

Only one major complain. Even with sensitivity level 10. When not zoom into weapon scope. You turn too slow, in comparison to when you actually zoom in.

Oh and you can't turn well when sprinting.

I'm on right now, exploring. Add me GAF?

I'm loving the universe they created here. I'm not fully sold on the game itself (I mean it's fun but nothing amazing so far) but the entire aesthetics of it, the art style, the UI and the lore are making me really like it.

Might this be another case of never play a Bungie game on normal?
Halo started becoming fun on Heroic and up, so perhaps Destiny will be similar. At least for the story missions.

Didn't explore enough. The first areas are just fodder to allow you to get situated. Later on you started seeing heavies that influence the lighter enemies and tend to be smarter using cover and retreating.

Pretty much how I feel. Gameplay is a bit bulletspongetastic, but it is one seriously polished product already and has a great setting and tone.

Just joined DestinyGAF on the alpha website, it's cool they got everything linked to a web platform already, I'm spelling the mobile app coming too :P

So when joining the GAF clan what can you do with it in game? I see I am in the clan on my roster page but I can't access it, see whose online in the clan etc

The game needs some sort of way to find Clan members without them being on your friend list. Perhaps clan members automatically get added into the Tower together.

Check the different controller configs. I could have sworn one had melee on the right stick.

Huh, so it looks like there's only 1 base ability, 1 melee attack, 1 supercharge ability and 1 movement ability that you can have at all times. That kinda sucks, was hoping for at least 2 base abilities at a time that you could choose from.... Why isn't melee locked to the right analog stick?

I just joined the GAF Clan aswell, hit me up if you wanna do anything in-game. I'll be on in a few hours for a long while. PSN ID: Nakhar feel free to add me if you want.

Now that the thread has died down a bit since last night, I can see if anyone else experienced this.

I played the biggest grind I've ever experienced in a game last night. This mission with the spider tank and sentinal...it took me and two others just over 2 hours to finish. The amount of damage the tank and the sentinal took was insane. You wouldn't normally have randoms stay that sort of duration but we pulled through it together. I was actually feeling a bit dizzy after so much sustained shooting and concentration. Anyway we danced at the end and god damn did we mean it. Are these things actually that powerful? I was shooting the legs and it seemed to do the most damage. By damage I mean like sticking a small pin in a T-Rex.

Gaf, how do you kill this motherfucker ? Weapons do no damage..... You also don't see his level just ??

And that's one of the first dungeons you can enter at starting location lol

Has Bungie said whether any progress/loot the player has made in the Alpha/Beta will carry over to the retail launch?

You can't. Enemies with question marks are invincible. That's Bungie's way of saying "stay the fuck out".

Since we don't start with a map (for reasons I agree with) I am hoping that at some point the ghost may allow us to chart a map as we play. I thought I recall seeing the ghost used as a sort of scanning tool ala Prometheus in one of the early trailers.

It is just a minor nitpick and doesn't affect my decision to get the game. I just think that with all of this tech they have, mapping out the "wastelands" would be possible with the ghosts.

What level were you all? Also, did you upgrade your weapons yet or still using the starter weapons?

I've picked up items on the ground but I don't think there's a specific indicator for them. Coupled with the fact that there are barely any chests in the wild its kind of hard finding loot. Or maybe doing quests and stuff is the main source, I dunno.

Anyone found any rare items? I still haven't seen anything past uncommon

Edit: butchered by swype

I expect the zones with the ?? enemies will be unlocked during the Beta.

I have. Rare items are sky blue. I got a Rare torso item that was north of level 8 dropped from an enemy. That's one of the worst parts of the alpha, that you collect all this great loot that you can't fucking use cause of the level cap lol

No the setup is fine, but as it is right now RS isn't used for anything and I wish they would have put another power on R1. The skill tree isn't as customizable as I would have hoped either, seems every class will end up in basically the same spot by the end.

R3 in the default config is used to highlight another player when you are close to them, which gives you different options like invite to fireteam, mute, etc.

I think I was level 4 or 5 at the time. I didn't upgrade any weapons. It may just be the case that we were all too low level to be realistically tackling this mission.

I think that is ammo and it's color coded. The white is for primary weapons, green is for "special" (secondary) weapons, and purple is for heavy weapons. I think those are the right colors but I'm going off of memory and I could be thinking wrong on one of those.

No you're correct.

I am extremely pleased with the alpha and can't wait for the beta, then the game.

The lore and setting is like crack to me. Visuals are very good (technically above average but more than that the look of the game is wonderfully consistent, love the maps and UI) audio is absolutely fantastic and the gameplay is engrossing.

My only regret is my two idiot brothers both waited too long to sign up for the alpha and missed it ("oh man, I though i had another day to do that!" "you idiot, it took like 5 seconds, I even sent you the link!") so I can't properly enjoy the co-op.

The full game will, I'm sure, do a better job of telling you what you need to know to get going. But in a way stumbling through the first hour was almost better in the end - getting lost and then working my way through some ruins and ending up at the entrance to the Cosmodome (the line of rusted cars from the first demo) was a great moment as I started to realize how much territory there was to explore.

Damn compression. I have to take a few minutes and figure out how to get proper screenshots.

Ya, that's pretty low. I have weapons that are almost 3 times stronger than the starter weapons now.

Upgrading weapons is key. Should be much more do-able once you have better gear.

Also, the hand cannones are sweeeeeet. Reminds me of how the magnum felt in BF3. Mah sweet sweet magnum :3
