Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

Currently going the route of the Strike Mission in Explore mode. It's so great, I'm finding random loot crates and lots of lvl 8 mobs.

If you havent tried it, go do it now! :)

turn your console on and off, that solved it for me. It's not like alpha's carry a final UI either. Probably just a booting screen that can crash anytime. You can't take it personally when Bungie themselves warns you about technical difficulties.
No I don't take it personally I know it's going to be rough around the edges.
Restarting the console didn't work though. Same error.

Well, after 3 matches on that god awful earth map, I can tell I'm never gonna enjoy the PvP in this game.

I dunno, maybe (hopefully) it's just that earth map that's just fucking terrible, really wanted to try the moon map (of course I got the shitty map 3 times instead), it's seems a bit more open, not too mention it's fucking gorgeous, while the earth map is just really ugly visually. Guess not even bungie can make crumbled brick buildings in a swamp area look pretty. Why they choose such a visually dull and dreary map for the alpha is beyond me, I mean at this point all the maps has to be complete and they're just polishing.

Don't really know what I can see about the gameplay, I think plenty of people have said it already, it feels too much like a CoD shooter, ADS didn't really bother me in the PvE stuff, but in multiplayer it's just fucking terrible, only shootout's I've enjoyed were the handful of times I was close enough to use hipfire with my fusion rifle and not miss every shot. TTK is abominable, feels like Bungie wanted to make a multiplayer shooter that did the opposite of what made Halo games so fun in MP.

I'm also very, very disappointed that there's only one or two powers per class.

Coming from Warframe, it felt very limiting.

These vehicles are really unfun.

Maybe if the interceptor didn't have homing on top of an enormous blast radius and a ton of HP, but it turns the moon map into simply fighting over those, and having no recourse if you get found by one.

Anyone else actually canceling their preorder after playing the Alpha? This game is really boring. The enemies are dumb, don't have interesting interactions or reactions and simply aren't fun to fight and respawn constantly in the exact same places. The bosses are just dumb bullet sponges. The environments are empty with very little to find. The explore missions are terrible and the multiplayer is even worse than Halo 4 with people running around with instant kill fusion rifles.

I'll give the game another try with the Beta, but right now I've lost all interest in it.

I haven't pre-ordered to begin with, but I understand that this is an alpha so it's not supposed to be representative of the final product. I'm 75% sure I will buy the game but I want to wait for the reviews first. Some parts of the game are disappointing and boring so I hope they don't end up being dealbreakers.

Gotta say, I was very hopeful going in, but there was a part of the back of my mind pretty skeptical of whether this would capture the proper "feel" I've been longing for in a shooter for a long time. I'm happy to say that it's there. I've loved pretty much everything about it... Just wish I could dig into the lore a bit, but I guess this is an Alpha after all. I'm loving what's there though.

I think this is the thing. There's going to be a lot of different things to level up, but leveling up each thing is going to go quickly. I get the impression bungie wants you to try a bunch and develop interesting playstyles, rather than pursue a 100 hour level up treadmill.

Here's some good reading, http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2013/12/27/the-character-progression-of-destiny.aspx

and a great vid on it, http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2013/12/13/designing-the-rpg-elements-of-destiny.aspx

Yes, the level 20 cap isn't all that important since some weapon will have huge skill tree which need lot's of exp to unlock. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if you are already max level once you reach the final planet or set of missions (similar to Diablo III where you can play the storyline and be at the level cap so your experience points are invested into the paragon progression system).

I'm straddling the fence right now. I'll wait for the beta though. Hopefully there are better boss fights in store because the current ones are extremely boring. Also, there really don't seem to be many abilities looking at the skill trees. I think I was hoping for more of an MMO with good shooting mechanics. The shooting is good but the MMO aspects are lacking so far.

Some impressions from one night:

+ The combat really does have flow. It takes place in all directions as the enemies flare out, including some great verticality. The AI isn't award winning, but its engaging to fight, mostly because of how nimble the enemies tended to be. Once I started my second character I got into the zone very quickly and two hours melted away. I had to put the game down to get some sleep, which is a great sign. ;p

+ Each weapon packed a nice punch. I love Bungie shotguns and semi-autos.

+ Public events can be *very* dramatic when they appear. And the whole blending of multiplayer works better than I thought it would.

+ The zones were fun to explore, but ... I didn't find much. No lore, and the occasional chest which had some glowing and non-descript lucre.

+ There was one underground passage that led to horrifying high level enemies that had me running for my life - that was fun :)

+ The Tower's view is gorgeous, especially its transition from night to day.

- Bosses are endless pits of hit points. Like to absurd Resistance 2 co-op levels of bullet sponging. All of those battles came down to trying to avoid the big boss uber one-hit kills or splash while dealing with the continually respawning enemies -- necessary to replenish the endless quantities of ammo needed to take them down.

- The class specific super powers seemed to take way, way, way too long to cool down. So I saved them up because I might need them to clear an area to revive a team mate or when running away from a particularly nasty wave of enemies (invisible double bladed dudes in particular).

- Voice work is just bad. Terribad. Disinterested voices reading words off a script. I'd prefer no voices at all to this. Tower chatter and NPCs saying "Hi Guardian" are fine though.

- The UI seems touch focused.

? One of the things that bugs me about Warframe (and other loot based co-op) is that so much of the time in public games people just sprint at full speed through the missions. It becomes a race - where its purely about acquiring the most/highest chance of quality loot in the absolute quickest amount of time possible, fun be damned, because its all about loot and the end-game where things "really start". This of course forces the issue on other players who might want to actually enjoy the fights or explore because if those players don't keep up, they'll find only bodies and drops waiting for them as the rushers clear the area as quickly as possible. I think there's a very real risk of the same thing happening in Destiny, made worse with people speeder biking their way through tunnels.

? Old Russia seemed very large at first, but once you hit the playable boundaries it started to feel much smaller, even by the end of a single evening with the game. I do wonder how much content this is going to launch with, and whether it'll be similar to its competition, or have a lot less since there is such a focus on competitive.

? Competitive being affected by gear still seems weird to me, and imbalanced by its very design.

? Running around the tower with everybody pointing and dancing will get old pretty quickly I think. Got Playstation Home vibes at times.

More I play it the more I can see some of the things I wont like.

So far I'm not really digging...

1-Enemies seem to be the only other beings in the universe.
2-The quest are from recorders rather than individuals.
3-Seeing the amazing outskirts of the universe...yet cant go there.

Also, any word on if the game will have "rare loot"?

If the beta is good I'll re-preorder it, but right now there is really nothing here for me.

Fusion rifle is some good shit

Am I the only one who thinks character classes are a terrible idea?

Forcing players into specific a archetype / playstyle based on a decision they make before they've even played the game and then giving them no way to change it without starting over and losing their progress just makes no sense at all to me.

This is probably my single biggest issue with Destiny. Everything else I'm confident that Bungie will work out, but classes look like they're here to stay.

Never played an MMO I'm guessing?

Yeah this sums up my feelings about it perfectly. I started a Titan and played with my friend 'til we got to level 7. Both pretty disappointed so far. I made two more characters in the other classes after he left. So far liking Hunter class more. But still kinda unsure. Seems weird because they were talking about how it'd be a fun game to explore things and find things with your friends, but a lot of the areas looked like they were kind of copy and pasted or just didn't have much care to them. Finding chests is like the extreme opposite of Borderlands. I think Borderlands had too many chests and also had too many weapons that ended up being just things to sell after a certain point. Could probably do with something in between. I dunno.

Anyway, I'll wait for the beta before deciding how I really feel about the game. Hopefully the game has a lot of actually meaningful missions and not "Stand on a pipe and analyze your surroundings. Go scan this. Kill enemies to collect drops." It's very standard MMO style pointless missions meant to level you up and not actually give you enjoyment.

It would be cool to see proximity chat implemented into free roam so instead of emoting to each other you can actually communicate. I guess that's why you join fireteams to enable voice chat but it's still would be a nice touch when joining up with randoms out in the wild.

Just got an invite even though I never asked for one. Huh. I guess I will try it.

So can I just play this game purely as a sort of Borderlands clone or is the competitive aspect a required part of it? I'm not entirely sure I understand what kind of game it is.

I definitely agree.

Wow, that special ability is way better than my shitty pistol.
Yeah I've tried all three classes, Hunter is easily my least favorite in terms of both movement and their super. Like I'm sure especially by endgame Hunters will be invaluable for PvE play, but they're just not very fun to play for me. Nova bombs all day erryday.

Do a weapon's stats and armor actually make a difference in MP? I just assumed every weapon of a specific class would have the same damage and kill in the same number of shots when you go into Crucible.

What does the Hunter class ultimately upgrade to? Maybe it gets better

Well I saw several NPCs in the tower selling what looked like rare weapons for Crucible-earned resources. I don't know why they would sell that specialized gear if it didn't have an affect.

Keep in mind that we are only getting access to one subclass for each of the main classes.

Also, can someone please explain to me how MP balances out? I keep hearing that it changes stats to balance, and that the stats of a weapon in SP isnt the same as in MP

Wow, that special ability is way better than my shitty pistol.

Yeah, the Hunter special is pretty lame. Warlock and Titan are pretty fun, though. They should really go back to the drawing board on that one.

I've hit level 8 and did missions for a few hours this morning. I still dig the game, but I did find something that needs to be addressed. I was alone in a zone and a public event appeared to kill a Fallen before it ran away. I only managed to get it to about 75% health before it ran off and I failed the mission. The game really shouldn't start public events unless there are multiple people around or just have the enemy HP scale to the number of participants.

Speaking of emotions as soon as I started the game i had 2 to 3 guys surrounding me, bowing and dancing

Do I just /dance on a keyboard?

The emotes are bound to the d-pad.

I'm curious if people understand the Orbs of Light mechanic that is designed to mitigate that long cooldown?

basically, everything that dies by a super generates these blue orbs that rapidly recharge everyone elses supers. It also helps people stick together since supers will generate more supers.

But very few people understand it. It definately needs to be highlighted better!

I think you are roght and it is this way ;) About the armor I dont know
