Destiny Alpha Thread: Impressions from the wild [Code Begging=ban]

I love that one song that comes up sometimes, with the bassline, reminds me of Under cover of night from the first halo.

I hope Marty wrote like 100 hours worth of music before they let him go.

This alpha is freaking fantastic. Gave me a way better perspective where this game is heading and actually convinced me to buy this on day one.

Old Russia Exploration just keeps going, the missions are fine and actually take you places.
Also perfectly showcases progression, as you have an incredible hard time with some of the enemies the first time you encounter them.
Speaking of which, wow, the bosses on the strike are though.

The controls are amazing, haven't played a first person shooter for some time now and it took me a bit, but got right back into it. I think I never had such a good time hitting those sweet spots, also visually so motivating with the number popping out. Definitely getting a strong Halo vibe, the health system, the jumps, and my resulting reaction whenever I'm in the red.

The MMO aspect makes the game especially unique. Loving all the customization and how you go shopping and interacting in the hub. In general I like the those details, as are you actually flying to the selected location.

Oh, and obviously I don't have to comment on visuals and sound.

Liked Bungie before, but just now realized that this actually is their next big step.

Can't wait to dive all into it.
Only wishes are that the loading times while flying to locations will get a bit faster and that the online co-op aspect either gets more intuitive or more distinguished.
Damn, I hope I'll have time for the game when it comes out.

Also, no splitscreen is terrible. They better have it for the fullgame. This would be a ton more fun with a coach buddy along with you. Halo did it, Borderlands did it. There is no reason not to have it.

They already said split screen is not happening.

I wish the Cryptarch would just sell decryption keys. I get that they're trying to encourage players to visit the social space more often, but this isn't Diablo where you can quickly pop back to town to do some gambling. You end up staring at loading screens for longer than it takes to be disappointed by that space sage.
Decrypting loot at the tower could work as something left for the end of your play session if loot weren't so rare in Destiny (and not even the useful kind), but its scarcity only makes me want to abandon whatever I'm doing to satisfy my loot lust.

dunno if its been mentioned, but claims of bosses being too difficult or drawn out are unfounded. if you know what you're doing and are equipped appropriately then the boss battles are perfection :)
I'm not sure if "perfection" is the right word to use when describing a six-legged "Walker" that doesn't know how to walk.

A few questions ..

1. Dismantling: A new weapon costs roughly 250-350 glimmer, and yet when I dismantle a weapon, I get 6-7 glimmer back? Am I missing something? Is that the only way to "sell" or am I missing a way to sell back items?

2. What is the best way to obtain green Uncommon weapons and armor? The Strike mission? Crucible? I've done a lot of exploring but don't seem to really get much rewards for the missions.

3. To level up a weapon or ability, you need to simply use it more often right? Is there anything more to that? i.e. to level up a Super or grenade or weapon I need to kill enemies with it to build the meter.

Thanks!

I seriously don't get the outrage some people still have over this. It's not the 90's anymore. Split screen days are LONG gone.

Read wrong. I honestly don't see not having it as a big deal. You do need the entire monitor landscape to do stuff and splitting the views would make this way harder...not to mention the technical strain.

Found a fairly hidden little ghost dude. I just held square to revive it. Doesn't appear that it did anything for me. Are those just collectibles or something?

After playing Borderlands, the customization and loot drops in this leaves a lot to be desired. I hope the address that in the future.

If you want to change to a different character, follow what the post above says. Can't re-customize, sadly. If you meant change the class of the character you're currently laying as, you can't do that either.

Ah, looks like you can only change the head. I was under the impression you can choose the colour of your clothes. Oh well.

Bungie really need to sort out the aiming.

The 'free look' is incredibly sluggish.

The sensitivity of 'free look' should be HIGHER than ADS.

I really like Destiny a lot. It's paced pretty well but I do think the enemy respawns in free roam could be ratcheted down a notch. The quest system seems very good, though I wish everything happened in free roam in an organic, emergent way instead of selecting certain things from the planet map.

I'm all in now and can't wait for September.

Did they say anything about characters transferring over to beta and final? I kind of hated having to replay stuff like with ff14rr beta heh

am I wasting my time putting items in my vault? I know XP and rank won't carry over to beta or final game but every weapon and armor i find that is above level 8 i am putting in my vault, in the hopes that when i reach the appropriate rank in the final game i'll have some loot waiting for me.

Merchants at the tower sell dyes which you can use to color your armor, but you need to be at a high enough level/faction reputation to purchase and use them. Unbuyable in the alpha.

I'm liking the PvE a lot, but holy shit this aim assist needs to go. At least give us a "I've played a FPS before" option. This is worse than Battlefield and COD.

I totally disagree with people on the respawn rates. When you're doing misisons where you have to get a certain number of parts, you don't want to have to wait around forever. I think as people play the game more, get better gear, and just overall get better at playing, they'll realize the respawn rates are fine.

I actually did the Exploration mission earlier by myself for over an hour. It was quite fun and addicting just getting XP to upgrade my guns. My scout rifle is a boss now. I'm going to have to try some more PvP soon because it didn't make a strong impression for me the first time I tried it.

Maybe I'm missing it, but there's nowhere in game to mute the playstation camera mic, is there?

I prefer not to mute it system side because I do actually sometimes use the voice features for switching games -- given there's no easy way to access games that are further down in my recently played list -- but I hate the mic picking up audio.

I want to swear at the shitty noobs who run past the capture point without helping out without them hearing it. My rage is nothing if not polite and contained.

That would give people who participated an unfair advantage over everyone else, so probably not.

Some of the respawns are really tight, though. I killed that cluster near the entrance in the main story mission, grabbed their dropped ammo, and then moved back to just the first corner so I could grab that collectible plant thing that I noticed when I was first in range of them shooting me, and that was enough for them to respawn right on top of me.

Sadly, Bungie already said that they weren't supporting it. Depressing...

Also maybe I just suck but does your equipment affect the crucible? Seems like the guys in first have better weapons and/or armor or something and ttk is much shorter for them.

One guy had like 40 kills on the other team and very little deaths...and everyone else was like under 10 lol

My biggest issue with Supers is the pullback to 3rd person throws off your aim and sometimes I'll hit something i didn't intend to.

Warlock class

I'd really like it if cosmetic items (class specific item like armband, cloak, waistcloth; ship/speeders, assuming there are no ship missions in the game) and player icons were carried over to the retail game. Do you guys think we'd get something like a new Ghost skin or player icon for participating in the Alpha and/or Beta?

Weapon damage and Armor ratings are normailzed, so everyone is the same there. But uncommon weapons with scopes, and (I THINK) stats like Intelligence or Discipline carry over to the Crucible. Armor abilities like 'throw grenades farther' also work. And of course weapon stats like Range, Stability, Rate of Fire, etc cary over as well.

Had fun with fellow gaffer Yaser Tech, we got up to all sorts of mischief!

When I first started playing I reasoned that either I've gotten unbelievably good at headshotting from medium to long distance, or there is a crap load of aim assist. I realized it was the latter pretty quickly when my reticle was being jerked left and right in view of enemies.

It's quite a bit too strong, needs to be reduced by 50% or something.

You can stand on each others heads... like Halo. Which is nice.

Had a tower of three earlier haha! saved the clip.

I'm hoping someone will answer my question about the supposed scale of this game. Could someone estimate the % of the game contained in the alpha? Do you think Old Russia is the only Earth zone? Will each planet only have one zone of similar size? That'd make it 1/5 of the total land mass, excluding the tower and PvP. I really hope there's more.

Only complaint I have are boss fights, they're just bullet sponges. The devil mission with septus prime(?) once my team got him to about 20% health a bunch of grunts started spawning and a few captains. Which made it ridiculously difficult and not in the fair way, horrible game game design right there. Besides that day one still.

Warlock class
Third person supers were supposed to let you see yourself looking cool, but I never notice my Warlock while casting because I'm too busy adjusting my aim due to the perspective change and the Warlock's weak throwing arm (she throws like a robot girl).

Played with Gafers and it is really fun :D

PVP ---> FUCK THE VEHICLES !

A million times yes. I don't really use vehicles, just the Sparrow to get around faster. And I'm more of a PTFO guy, so I'd rather cap points than drive around and racking up kills. But I know that does help in a way because the more dead guys on the other team = easier time for the rest of your team to cap. I hate how there's no counter to vehicles besides other vehicles or supers. Wish there was hijacking like in Halo. Maybe when I unlock the Hunter's tripmine, I could use that as a counter.

One game l played last night with other GAFfers had me finish with had 4 kills, 0.5 K/D ratio, but 13 captures.

Edit-

Is your character a female Exo?

Honestly it's probably 2-5%, the high estimate only because of the two PvP maps in included.

Not only are there more locations on earth, but Mars, the Moon, and Venus, not to mention things we don't know about yet.

Don't forget the expanded level cap and loads more loot too.

I don't get all these bullet sponge complaints about the Devil Walker and Sepiks Prime. Get better weapons and focus fire on the weak points. Use your supers and heavy weapons. Stay mobile and use double jumps and slides to avoid damage. Take cover when you're hurt. It really isn't challenging yet.
