Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 9: F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5

So hey there's been like 40,000 SSB posts since E3 so it's been virtually impossible for me to keep up, did we ever get some good showfloor impressions that addressed those lists of questions people had? The thread for the questions kinda became the tournament livestream thread so there was no way to find anything in there any more. It'd be nice to just read about overall changes to the mechanics and physics and movesets.

Yeah, so glad PALand is not suffering with a ridiculously relayed release this time round. By the time it was released here the community was basically dead. :(

RE items: if there were options to set exactly where items appear and item respawn intervals, I think that would help tourney players to warm up to using them, even in balanced matches. Maybe have a translucent image of the item appear with a countdown next to it, or always have two of each item show up.

At least in Melee, items had some decent balance and, despite how they involved chance with the way they spawned, they took a reasonable amount of skill to use/counter. Placing/keeping track of motion sensor bombs, catching/dodging items, using them as shields, and so forth could get ridiculously hectic, yet trying to keep track of it all was what made it cool.

And Pokeball matches were great when the pokemon didn't completely suck like in Brawl

I just noticed Pac Man's official picture on the website! So cool!

Melee pokeball matches where great. Brawls Bonsley, Gulpin, Gardevoir and Weavile were not...

I won't deny that a lot of the rhythm heaven gets parodied, but the pure volume of the interviewer ones is above and beyond most... I suggest you click the link in my post for the word 'it' :3 And those are only counting the half-decent ones: If I went with ones with terrible quality like some of those chorus kids ones I'd be here all day :P
I only posted those videos because I was horrified with what came up when I searched for them (hence the "I've had enough Internet for today"). I wasn't comparing them to the interview ones.

With that said, "higher quality YouTube parodies" is about the most absurd Smash Bros. criteria I've ever heard.

I think that happened to my friend when he tried to look them up too lol

Noone had seen the full final smash and my point still stands that he was a fan favourite character, people just wanted to see it in action, the conditions that lead to it, other than the fact that people at first thought it missed so there was a bit of teasing going on there, weren't the reason for the hype.

Or maybe I'm just completely misunderstanding the casual audience and they thought the fact that the random number of hits needed to break that smash ball ended up letting megaman grab it instead of rosalina and then he pressed B was some amazing feat worthy of hype.

Well I genuinely believe smash items can screw you over more than mario kart items.

If only because you actually have smash bros. tournaments where there is sometimes large amounts of money on the line.

You can spin it anyway you like, but that was the most excited I've seen a Smash crowd. Yes a random sequence of events made it possible, yes it was centered around Mega Man being one of biggest character request in the series after Sonic, yes the Final Smash was hype, the announcers were hype, and yes the controller input for it was simple. It was also a fantastic piece of fan service which is another reason for why we have Smash, all possible because of some randomness. Anything else you wanna add to downplay that moment because it wasn't some immaculate display of skill?

Well I'm going to disagree. Or maybe you're really good at Mario Kart and I suck, and maybe you suck with items on in Smash and I'm great. You make it seem like the items being random doesn't affect anyone else but you. Your luck with items greatly determines your enjoyment in MK and placement in the races, it's not the same with Smash because it is so random and favors no one regardless of their placement. Games like Sonic All-Star Racing Transformed do items much better than MK IMO.

I feel like you're the type of dude when playing with your friends, that will ignore items when they're on because you think you're so good and have your opponent beat. But then your opponent gets a Smash Ball and a legendary Pokemon, and you get butthurt when you lose because of it.
I'm actually just describing how I used to be, lolololol.

Fair enough :3
I find there's quite a few good TF2 ones I thought were well made, like the see-saw one :D

As long as we're on Rhythm Heaven parodies, I left that this one is one of the more impressive ones.

But yeah the Interview minigame has a metric ton of parodies.

That's easily my favourite one. I love the megamixes in general but the pony parody is stupidly well done XD

Listen I know this isn't to directed at me but I agree with the first paragraph. But the second one is still missing the point IMO at least to what I was arguing

All I said is that items effect the outcome of the match due to something other than skill. I never brought up Mario Kart nor did I ever say it's item system was comparable. I all said was that smashes still effects a skill based out come.

I never said it was as bad as MK even though you seemed to keep posting that. I never said items on is somehow a worse way to enjoy the game in anything other than my opinion and I never said people should even want to get good and skillful or said that it's a better way to play the game even though you brought up "the competitive community has been just as bad as those saying smash can't be fun without items or is better played casually"

I agreed with that and have never said anything to the contrary and I have no desire to police how other people play and look down on others because of the way I and they have fun.
I brought up the casuals because they did say that IN THIS VERY THREAD. And I was using examples from this thread

All I have been saying is that items effect the test of skill in tournaments

Do you agree? Yes or no

My point was that megamans final smash being used wasn't awesome, it was exciting to see it and the commentary was great but to say it was the most hype moment in smash is an insult to competitive smash imo, unless I'm misunderstanding what you meant.

I'd say I'm better at mario kart than I am in smash due to the fact that mario kart has a far lower skill ceiling, I don't find it hard to place top 3 95% of the time in a 12 player race, whereas a lot of the items in smash bros. can be incredibly over powered or just have a random chance of fucking you over even though you're the one who got the item.

When I play with my friends we don't play with items on because I don't know anyone who enjoys them anymore, whenever I did play with items on I'd just pick them up and throw them off the stage just to stop cheap shit from happening.

I dunno, I just don't find any enjoyment in throwing a pokeball and a lagendary pokemon appearing and getting the kill for me, I play fighting games to beat other players, not have something else do it for me.

Lets talk DLC characters.

Would you want veterans, or straight up newcomers? If veterans, who would you want? If you chose newcomers, would you want another character from a series already represented in playable form, or one that isn't?

I would want more new characters that are represented. Specifically some more retro characters: Sukapon, Takamaru, Mike Jones, etc.

I'll admit I'm a no items player. Playing it at E3 I went for the items because I was using Little Mac almost exclusively and he has such a high run speed compared to everyone else that I got to items first relatively easily. He has a good running attack that often cleared the way for me on the way to my prize. I won a lot of matches often times because I could get to the smash balls/pokeballs/other game winning items before the other players. Good luck getting across the field faster than me DK. This is one of the reasons I've always been against items beyond the randomness of them. Fast characters become even better than they already are.

Also the difference in Final Smash powers are insane. Fox's FS>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>ignoring the FS>>>>>>>>>>>>>Villager.

I love seeing Rhythm Heaven hype because I heard the Wii one bombed pretty badly in EU :(
That could have been because like Brawl they took an age to bring it over.
Americas: February 13, 2012
EU: July 6, 2012
AU: September 13, 2012

Well we got the Japanese track as a bonus so that's nice, but I wouldn't be surprised if many either imported or, unfortunately due to the Wii's condition at the time, pirated it.

I rather get expansions a year after release than singular DLC characters and stages.

The more the merrier for me. All I need is Ridley, and Ninten and Lucina as alts atleast.

-Inklings would be awesome aswell, they fit right in

I'll repost what I said earlier:

I don't expect it, but I want Sakurai to add the Inklings to Smash Bros. as post-launch character DLC.

We already know from the third Gematsu leak that post-launch character DLC is planned. And we have little reason to doubt the Gematsu leak at this point: All of the newcomers have panned out, including the exact name "Mii Fighters" as seen in the third leak.

If DLC was already Sakurai's plan when the leaker got his intel, then chances are they've already started conceptualizing the DLC and perhaps even working on it (separate from refining and balancing the core roster). The question, then, is what characters they might put together. Cut characters would seem simplest, but there is the possibility of all-original content.

Adding the Inklings would work wonders for Splatoon as a new IP, endearing the Inklings to a huge audience. If timed correctly, to coincide with Splatoon's launch in 2015, it could translate to direct sales of Splatoon, as well.

The Inklings also seem like they'd work exceptionally well as characters in Smash Bros. Granted, the ink splatter probably couldn't linger on the stage that long due to memory restrictions, but temporary splashes would work just as well. Slow down other players, disappear into your paint and reappear elsewhere, rocket-jump for a recovery, melee with the paint-roller, throw ink-grenades and fire off ink-shots, cyclones, etc. The Inkling could be available in both male and female forms, with all of the team colors from Splatoon.

If we don't see them as DLC, I'm sure we'll see them in Smash Bros. 5. As combat-oriented characters made by EAD, they're ready-made for Smash.

I don't miss any veterans with the exception of Dr. Mario, and to that end they should just change Mario to receive the Doc's physics.

Newcomers all the way. Get some brand recognition up in here with new franchises like Splatoon and maybe even TW101. Also wouldn't mind seeing characters like Dixie or Kumatora.

If there is DLC, it'll probably be a mix of both cut veterans and newcomers. I'd be cool with that.

I love seeing Rhythm Heaven hype because I heard the Wii one bombed pretty badly in EU :(

I picked it up once in a HMV a little after christmas for £5 new. It was on a shelf full of shitty cheap things they were getting rid of and I kinda flipped out because I'd never even seen it in stores.

If I were Aggressive Marketing Nintendo -- and if Sakurai were willing -- I'd greenlight DLC characters for both the Inklings (Splatoon) and Henry (Code Name: Steam), and make them available as a straight-up digital download and by way of their Amiibos, released around the time of their respective games. The hype would only benefit these new IPs, and the Amiibos could work both with Smash and the new games.

I could definitely see Hades from Kid Icarus Uprising being a DLC character if he's not in the game already. His shapeshifting armor (face-guns, chest-drill, etc) make him perfect for Smash, aside from already being the most awesome villain ever.

The more I think about Rhythm Heaven being in the game, the more excited I get for the music. I picked some of my favorite tracks:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMehi2h2OAY : Bon-Odori (A remix was in Fever)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0NJdU54snA : Stealthy Rat
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIJNKOJN2EA : Blue Birds 2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElR59qovlI0 : Moai Doo-Wop
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcQ4upwXgX0 : Flipper Flop
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgPFSiIeP14 : Ringside
This is basically me, only with Xenoblade music instead of Rhythm Heaven music. Amusing, since they're about as tonally night-and-day as you can get!

As far as some of my favorite tracks from Xenoblade, from the background music alone:
  • "Gaur Plains", still probably my favorite track in the game. It's somewhere between an ethnic piece, with those guitars and violins, and a disco song, with that drum beat, and it somehow just works.
  • "Colony 9", a great little opening-level piece. Really love that woodwind (pan flute?).
  • "Satorl, the Shimmering Marsh / Night", a downright beautiful piece (although its inclusion in Smash Bros. would admittedly be highly dependent on what kind of stage is in use, as it's pretty slow-paced).
  • "Makna Forest", which is similarly slow-paced but a little more chipper about it.
  • "Alcamoth, Imperial City", for something more imposing. It's also slow-paced, but the energy of that organ and the really deep bass strings might allow it to work in spite of that.
  • "Snowy Mt. Valak / Night", because dat piano lead. (The daytime variant is another great song, but doesn't lend itself to much outside of snowy stages; the Night variant, however, could feasibly work outside that context.)
  • "
    Mechonis Field
    "
    , a surprisingly whimsical piece for a relatively-late-game stage. You'd think that
reaching the Mechonis, the giant on which your enemies reside,
would warrant something imposing, but instead we get this piece that almost sounds like it's instead celebrating the wonderment such a place would instill.
  • "
    Central Factory/Mechonis Core
    "
, another late-game stage that is, fittingly, equal parts intimidating and triumphant.

Then you get into the battle and cutscene music, which is a lot more obviously in line with what you'd expect to hear in a fighting game:
  • "Time to Fight!", which wouldn't sound out-of-place in a Kingdom Hearts game (Yoko Shimomura did both, after all; YMMV on how good/bad a thing this is).
  • "One Who Gets In Our Way", the game's boss theme. Designed for big encounters as it is, it'd fit in quite snugly into Smash Bros. without even needing a remix.
  • "You Will Know Our Names", the game's special-encounter battle theme (for unique enemies that are typically higher-level than the ones in the surrounding vicinity and drop better loot). I would be very surprised if this does not make it into Smash Bros. in some capacity, even if Shulk didn't get in.
  • "Mechanical Rhythm", the theme for fights against Mechon
when you're fighting them on Mechonis itself
. Generally touted as one of the game's better battle themes, and with a kicking drumline and rocking electric guitar lead like that, it's hard to disagree.
  • "Engage the Enemy", a cutscene track usually used when tragic shit starts getting real, might actually work in the context of a fight scene regardless. Plus, those violins, man.
  • "Unfinished Battle", another cutscene track that's high-enough energy to possibly work as backing music for an acutal fight.
  • "Tragic Decision" - okay, this one's stretching a bit, but Sakurai included "Midna's Lament", a piece that similarly opened up with a somber piano arpeggio, and made it work. At least this track gains a drumline pretty quickly, and then full-out rock guitars toward the end!

That covers a fairly wide net, and obviously is too much for one stage to hold, but I still had to deliberately omit other tracks I'm fond of in spite of that. It's seriously one of Nintendo's better soundtracks - one of the better video game soundtracks in general, really!

The only downside is that I have no idea what the hell Shulk's victory theme could be; the game doesn't really have victory music. There's short jingles for when you find landmarks scattered about the maps, but they're way too short to work as an actual victory jingle, I'd think (the secret landmark one's a bit better, but still pretty short). This is probably one of those times where the composers will have to try and work one out of, say, the game's title theme - maybe the cadence from 2:18-2:40 could be what they use? Seems a little less upbeat than most Smash victory themes, but hey, more variety I guess.

Wonder Red would be perfect for DLC, it's his only chance, and possibly the time he needs for a great moveset.

I would also welcome the Inkling too, she'd be pretty great. I can see her being a character with so much mobility, making her a very unique and fun character.

It's one of the reasons why I welcome it.

How about this for DLC:

1. Newcomer: Takamaru (Mysterious Murasame Castle)
2. Newcomer: Tactician (Fire Emblem Awakening)
3. Newcomer: Hades (Kid Icarus Uprising)
4. Newcomer: Henry (Code Name: STEAM)
5. Newcomer: Inklings (Splatoon)

6. Veteran: Snake (Metal Gear)
7. Veteran: Mewtwo (Pokémon)
8. Veteran: Squirtle (Pokémon)
9. Veteran: Ivysaur (Pokémon)
10. Veteran: Lucas (Mother 3)

You mean like the interviewer and wrestler, who also appear in G&W? :P
http://youtu.be/GgFEtYXAcLo?t=18s (they're on the left, in front of the building with the green shirt sign)

To be honest I think the interviewer and wrestler pair are probably better known than the chorus kids. I didn't even know about the chorus kids until the leak, yet I've known about the wrestling pair and others for ages now. Their game is just so memetic that there there are countless parodies of it :3

Gem appraises the battle!

I know the Interviewer and Wrestler. Never knew where they came from. When I first saw Chorus Kids I thought they were something like Plue

Plue_Fairy_Tail_by_ziofox.png

While I"m indifferent to the entire Rhythm series (never tried it) I would like a stage in smash based on what I've seen on youtube.

7. Veteran: Mewtwo (Pokémon)
8. Veteran: Squirtle (Pokémon)
9. Veteran: Ivysaur (Pokémon)
10. Veteran: Lucas (Mother 3)

I'd much rather the vets you posted than the newcomers, but if they're fun, sure. I'd also feel sad and ripped off if most of those vets don't make the cut and then they're sold to me later. 10 DLC characters is a lot (has any fighting game had that many?)

No need to add Squirtle and Ivysaur. If you're going that route, give me Blastoise and Venosaur.

"Tactician" from FE:A? Blech. No visual accuracy for a custom character.

If Snake could be in, he would be.

Ten would be a lot of DLC characters, and some might ask why not just save them for a new Smash at that point. BUT... and I think this is important to note... Imagine the money Nintendo could make selling each for $5 a piece.

Although in any case, I think any hypothetical newcomers for Splatoon and Code Name: STEAM should be free, since the point would be to evangelize the Nintendo fan base with these new IPs.

I'd rather them all be bundled at once if there are more than 2 newcomers. I think only the hardcore of the hardcore smash fans would buy more than 2-3 characters at $5 each. ESPECIALLY if they're only cut veterans.
