Why do Kid Icarus fans call Dark Pit Pitoo? I know that's the Japanese name, but if you're not speaking Japanese it's just out-of-place, and it sounds hilarious.

Pitoo.

Anyway, pic of the day is fucking nothing.

How is that?

Pic of the day. Here's a new mini-game that's quite a bit different from Coin Launcher in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It's called Trophy Rush! The details…will be kept secret for now.

I think it's not nothing since it's our first time to learn what it actually is.

Wasn't there something similar - some sort of collect-the-trophies mode - in Melee (or Brawl?) It's been so long since I've done anything besides plain old Vs mode that I can barely remember what other modes each game had. I have no memory whatsoever of Coin Launcher.

did you play kid icarus: uprising? He's Pit Two, aka Pitoo. They call him that in the game

Hopefully the name represents the mode well; I know people that didn't like collecting trophies, so a mode that may allow them to get them in a quicker/more interactive manner might entice them to go for them.

Melee was more or less just gambling. Spend up to 20 coins to increase your odds at getting a new trophy. The more trophies you have, the smaller the odds.

Which is something that absolutely pisses me off about sakurai. His bias is awful.

Eh. He didn't actually include other Kirby characters in Melee and 64 partially because he didn't want to favor what he worked on. I don't feel adding Dedede or Meta Knight in Brawl was unnecessary either. As for Smash 4, Smash Run being like City Trial doesn't seem too self indulgent, since it is adapting a mode a lot of people like into something new. The Kid Icarus Uprising love seems a bit odd, but at the same time, it, it's arguably the biggest game he's made since the Smash Bros. series started, and the game was probably designed with the mentality that a lot of this stuff could end up in a new Smash Bros. So I don't really think he is all that biased.

They call him Pitoo in the English version of the game, as well. It's a play on "Pit, too" or "Pit, two." Hades riffs on it further by calling him "Pitooey" (a play on the sound of a sneeze).

Having SNL writers handle the English script was a brilliant move for Uprising.

I feel it'll be fine. People are just not used to the different controls and so they, with only a small time to get to grips with it, try playing as if it was Melee and realise it doesn't play like that.

I'm still getting it.

I haven't played it, but from where I'm sitting, I kind of wish they'd just included all of the 3DS content in the WiiU version.

It'd certainly be better for the WiiU if it were the only one.

It was more comfortable than I thought, at least good to play with, hated that the 3DS were not connected in the BestBuy I went, wanted to try more multiplayer matches than the SmashRun. I hope the retail version can customize buttons to swap L and R, so my grab is on the right and shield on the left like in 64.

I'm excited about portable Smash, and it will just be a placeholder until the Wii U version anyway. After the Wii U version is out, I'm still excited about the idea of bringing it around so easily.

I didn't play the 3DS version, but I watched it very closely at Smash fest for a Smash Run. It looked great to me. The 60fps caught me off guard on how awesome it looked. So I dunno. We'll see. It's the controls I'm more worried about if anything.

Smash Run was very fun, and the game for the most part seems fun. The circle pad is also better for tilting, imo. I found it easier to swap between tilting and smashing with the circle pad than I ever did with the Gamecube. THAT BEING SAID, the controls do take a lot of getting used to, which is why you'll read negative impressions. I found myself often using tap up to jump as opposed to X or Y, which was weird. Additionally, L to grab and R to shield gets confusing, especially if you're constantly swapping between the Wii U and 3DS versions (which is what a lot of people at the Best Buy demos were doing), as in the Wii U Best Buy demo, both of the pro controller's shoulder buttons grab, while the triggers block.
But yeah, definitely hard to get any solid impressions off of it, but it overall seemed really fun. The only thing that worried me was that I wasn't all that impressed by the stages...but then again, I only really got to play two of them.

I enjoyed the Smash Run which was all I got to play. The controls seemed fine to me playing as Mega Man & I was left wanting more SR. So I'm sold. People have been harsh towards or ignoring the 3DS version from day 1, I basically don't trust most of the negative opinions to it.

thanks for the good feedback guys this helps balance out the negatives I've been hearing

Pit calls him Pitoo aka Pit Two in Uprising, and yes it's stupid when people use it for him. Just call him Dark Pit damn it.

I kind of liked the coin launcher...

It was a nice was to wind down a Smash marathon session. This looks intense! Oh well, it's probably better.

In Melee, there is a vending machine of sorts where you bet certain number of coins to get unique trophies. That is aside from the classic mode where there are bonus stages to earn trophies, and adventure mode where you can pick them up at random spots.

"New game mode? Great, another nothing pic. I really wish it would have been Palutena laying down."

Smash fans are weird.

and I wouldn't have it any other way <3

Oh, that's a good idea for a pic

Like they could have her ass facing toward the screen

Samurai, I hope you're taking notes

I definitely remember the gumball machine thing, but I could've sword there was a separate trophy minigame. I must be thinking of the bonus stages in classic mode.

I think the problem was that people were going between small screen 3DS games and big screen console games which will make the smallness of the 3DS obvious. As someone who has put many hours into the 3DS (especially New Leaf) I know that if one basically focuses just on it then the screen size isn't an issue as you basically become used to it and absorbed all the same. I mean you do play handhelds much closer to your face than TVs and in some ways due to the difference in distances that you view them the handheld screen takes up almost the same proportion of your vision as the TV (if you sit a sensible distance from it). However at E3 you stand way to close to big screens and thus this effect is destroyed.

I stand corrected.

Still sounds stupid. "Pitoo".

Ceaseless negativity.

I actually liked the coin launcher, but I can see why it's nice for them to replace it.

Coin Launcher was awful because you spent so many coins on nothing. Just shooting objects in the hopes of getting three trophies (that weren't even rare), and shooting dozens of missiles because you have to do that or lose more coins!

At least with the slot machine, building up a shitload of coins through playing guaranteed you a new trophy or a good shot at one. Build up hundreds of coins in Brawl, and you spend 15 minutes getting three copies of Midna and Luigi's Mansion.

Pit and Palutena call him that in the english version. He calls himself Dark Pit.

"Pitoo" is an intentionally annoying monicker given to the character by Pit and Palutena. It's not supposed to sound cool, haha.

I just want it to be fast. Like you said, 15 minutes of coin shooting was painful. I eventually stopped because I just don't care that much. I don't care if I get good stuff or not, but let me burn through the slots/coins quickly.

Yep. The coin launcher felt very lame cause everytime trophies showed up I was just like "oh I got that already".

I believe Palutena nicknames him that in Chapter 6. I don't think it's the Japanese name. Also it's spelled 'Pittoo' in-game.

Niiice, new trophy Get method!
Back in the days where I wrote down Smash ideas, I fantasized about a new minigame in the vein of Break the Targets and Board the Platforms, that involved hunting down trophies with stages tailored specifically to each character. Not only that, the obtainable trophies would have something to do with the character in question. Imagine that section in the Subspace where you're hunting down every Brawler's trophy, only in more compact stages fit to each character's abilities. For example, Zelda's stage would have her hunting down trophies of Tetra, the Phantom, etc; Marth would be fighting his way for trophies of Elice, Caeda, and so on.
...But then it wouldn't have had much replay value, hah! Excited to hear more about this mode.

Why do people hate the Coin Launcher? The odds of getting a new trophy were about the same, but at least you could do more than just wait for the animation to finish over and over again like in Melee...

Certainly felt like I was getting more new trophies in melee.

But I liked the coin launcher as a mini-game despite the crappy gains.

People hate the coin launcher? wut? that was amazing, it was a super addicting minigame
ive played literally hours of it.

The odds seemed much worse given how random it was at times. Lottery was a almost always guaranteed thing iirc.

Can we get a compilation of all the front-screen KOs shown so far? These are simply hilarious.

Can jump out of shields.

Air down remains 33% from Brawl but can now potentially combo into Up air.

He traded in a headbutt for a goddamn Flash Kick.

Guile_flashkick.gif

3 games and he finally looks like he's going to be great.

I might start crying.

That new up-smash better anti-air as good as a Flash Kick, too. Yoshi's Brawl up-smash was one of his best moves because it was a fantastic anti-air, so if this nerfs his anti-airing capabilities I'm gonna be disappointed.

Dark Pit's Japanese name is Kuroi Pitto (Black Pit). His nickname in the japanese version is Kuropi.

Pitoo was just some dumb nickname Palutena came up with. (Pit two? Get it? Pitoo?)

The egg toss in Uprising was much less irritating, if only because you could see the percentage chance of receiving a new trophy before starting.

I never managed to get them all in Brawl. Some just never showed up, and even then if they did there was a good chance to miss them seeing the rare trophies spawn with a shit ton of the other objects.
